The fact that the USA's internment camps (WW2) were a thing. Just at all.

Also that when learning works history you hear about concentration camps and how horrible they were but not about the bad things the Allies did.

I only learned about internment camps a year after I learned about WW2, the school system didn't think it was necessary until then I guess.

Some people (usually American nationalists) saying that bombing innocent civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was "justified". It's even more egregious how some of them trying to paint it as a "necessary measure" or "anti imperialist"

People overcorrecting themselves because of the "thing: Japan" meme, and now they think that nothing could be appreciated about Japan or their culture

People randomly bringing up Unit 731 in a discussion that doesn't have anything to do with critique of the Japanese imperialism. Most of them don't actually care about the victims of the Japanese imperialism and use it as a "gotcha" to paint Japanese people as devilish monsters, without analysing historical/cultural/economical context of that time period, that lead to the rise of fascism in certain countries

Weird thing, that you might hear from some racist white people who claim that Asians are "white worshippers", so all anime characters have "white features" (they don't)

When people say that anime is a uniquely misogynistic "genre". Or that Japanese media is "prdophillic"

When people say that Japan created anime to "whitewash their imperial past".. This is so nonsensical. It's like saying that US created Bugs Bunny to hide that they did Native genocide

does people using japaneese words for humor count? it really makes me uncomfortable when someone (especially non-japaneese people) say something like "oh ma gah you look so kawaii desu channn" satirically while not knowing what half the words mean and only saying it to mock whoever they are talking to

This is japanophobia and of course it counts!

Language is an essential part of the Japanese culture, mocking it is inherently racist, people should not use foreign words if they don't know their meaning or if they're using them in a 'satirical' way

The romanticization of Japan and the consequential pushback AGAINST the romanticization of Japan (calling “Japan glazers” “cringe” and whatnot) has made it difficult for me to exist comfortably within my Japanese identity.

Obviously there is a lot more nuance in the above issue. I’m in more of a middle ground. People shouldn’t be punished for having a liking to anything Japanese so long as they aren’t appropriating the culture and/or completely ignoring the glaring issues the country has.

But I feel like it’s become two extremes. It’s either you’re unreasonably obsessed with Japan or you think liking anything Japanese is embarrassing or even a moral failing. And as someone who doesn’t “look Japanese” I feel like I have to constantly justify my identity in order to simply live my life.

I grew up using a username with “chan” after my name because that’s what my mom calls me. It’s my childhood name and it’s cute. But now I feel like “(name)chan” has become so associated with being “cringe” that I couldn’t possibly go back to using it. I changed it a long time ago.

Similarly my mom once told me that I should incorporate Japanese phrases into my commentary for my job because it would make me more interesting. I told her I couldn’t. The internet would see it as cringe. I think that’s when I realized my thinking was an issue. I essentially told her that speaking our language was “cringe.” I felt so bad because like, isn’t that so fucked up to say?

I get that generally no country should be glazed to hell and back but it reaches a point where you’re just making fun of the culture and language. There are real people that live that culture and speak that language. Please stop using everything Japanese as a punchline I’m so TIRED
