I was ready. #Reality
A/N - This was a request that came to me on my wall on Wattpad. It's a one shot based on the song, Holding out for a Hero. I did this slightly different, so I hope you like it.
Images found here, here, and here.
"I got this." You reminded yourself while you watched your targets through your night vision goggles.
Two armed men patrolled a large, gated entrance of the base you were about to infiltrate.
"Get in, get the intel, and get out." You huffed and looked around the abandoned base.
As for bases, it was a smaller one that hadn't been used in a long time. The humid night air you found yourself in suddenly turned chilly, with the sudden temperature drop and windy breeze that picked up. You looked around expecting to see your team and frowned.
"Right...I'm alone..."
You adjusted your weapons and took off the goggles, placing them in one of your side pockets, grateful Yelena designed your tactical gear for this mission.
You had memorized the base you were outside of until you could recall and draw it from memory, knowing where to go and what you had to do. You hid a yawn that was threatening to appear since it was just before midnight; you straightened yourself and calmed your breathing.
This was your first solo mission your team put you on. You're a tactical agent for an elite agency that is operating alongside the new Avengers, but this mission was all yours.
🦸🏻♂️
You smiled, thinking back to your first meeting with the new Avengers a few weeks ago. Mainly, you met with Yelena who was a former Black Widow, her father Alexei who seemed way too excited to be working, and former congressman turned Avenger, Bucky Barnes.
You had a few conversations with them, mostly outlining your roles, but those were kept brief and to the point. They went on their way, and you stayed behind working with your communications team with their new set up. You learned there was going to be a new mission but hadn't heard anything further.
A few days ago. you were called in for the mission briefing and saw Yelena, Alexei, and Bucky sitting around a table. You found Yelena focused and a little snarky, Alexei was boisterous, and Bucky, well, he was quiet and thoughtful, but he unnerved you. Bucky Barnes' intense stare was lethal as he listened to your thoughts and opinions on the mission.
You could tell he was experienced and knew what he was talking about thanks to his years and years of experience and service. Sure, you know all about his former life as the infamous Winter Soldier, who didn't, but seeing him sitting around the table focused on the mission, that man no longer exists.
It was announced you were going to do this mission on your own, which made your stomach twist in knots, but you were up for the challenge. Bucky sat across from you, giving you pointers, tips and ideas, and intel. Your mind wandered to him being through so much, you wonder what he does in his off time and who he hangs out with.
Does he have friends? Where does he buy his groceries? Does he date? You internally scolded yourself for thinking those thoughts when you're supposed to be preparing.
It doesn't help he's easy on the eyes with his silky chestnut hair that frames his beautiful blue eyes which seem to peer into your soul when he talks to you. His stubbled face and his perfect pink lips were hard for you to ignore and focus on the task at hand, but you did. You zeroed back to what he was talking about which were traps and threats. Those were more important than daydreaming about the man who sat across from you.
There will be plenty of time for you to daydream about Bucky Barnes when this was all over.
After your solo mission was announced and the meeting was dismissed, Bucky had pulled you aside to make sure you were going to be ok to complete it.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" He asked.
Did he know I was fantasizing about him? Crap.
"Of course I do." You bristled at his question. You stood taller and held your chin high. So many men in your field always underestimated you, but you never let them get to you. Bucky frowned to himself but then his eyes went big.
"Oh, well...I didn't mean you couldn't handle yourself because I know you can, I've seen your work and have read your reports. I only want you to be safe, that's all I meant." He fumbled a little and cleared his throat.
At first, you were angered and annoyed he came across as a bit of a patronizing jerk, but you quickly discovered, he only cared and wanted you to be safe.
You thanked him for his apology and worked with him on developing your mission plan, with him giving you his opinion on what he thought would work best and what wouldn't work. You appreciated his thoughts and took those into consideration when you had to stop a smile at the thought of working alongside the infamous Bucky Barnes.
🦸🏻♂️
A gust of wind that blew a few strands of your loose hair snapped you out of your memories. You checked your pockets and intel for what felt like the hundredth time before you stood and grabbed a gun from your holster.
"Here goes nothing." You sighed, then took off to the main entrance with the distant rolls of thunder lurking to the south.
🦸🏻♂️
Your intel told you there would be five men total on site: two guards at the gate, two stationed inside the hall, and one who would be in the main computer room. All you had to do was take them out, get the hard drive, place your external drives in the computers to input the viruses, and leave.
You've done this lots on past missions, but you've always had a team backing you, so you were not only nervous, but were praying you could pull this off on your own as you made your way to the base. A light sprinkle started to fall making the ground a little wet. The wet leaves and rocks of the forest you were in was going to make your escape a little harder you thought.
You got close to the base but stopped and hid behind a large tree to steady yourself. You peeked around the tree and used your night vision goggles one last time to check, and it was still the same, no change.
The men were still standing there, no one else was wandering around and there were no vehicles arriving or departing from the road. You put the goggles away and froze, looking behind you.
The hair on the back of your neck prickled; it felt like someone was watching you, but no one was there. Your intel had said numerous times no cameras were up, no other roads lead to the facility, so there was no reason for anyone else to be out there, so you trusted your team. You peeked behind you once more but didn't see anyone.
"Weird." You shook the feeling of being watched off you.
"Let's go." You steeled yourself and headed to the base.
The two targets at the gate were taken out by your gun, so you continued to the entrance. Shooting cameras and lights out so you were in stealth mode. Another rumble of thunder was heard, this time closer, followed by a quick flash of light.
"Fucking storm." You whispered, then used the code to get into the base.
You kept your gun at eye level, moving swiftly in the darkened halls. There was an eerie quietness in the abandoned base while you made your way to the computer room. You saw where the hallway branched off, but you made sure to stay left like Bucky had advised you.
You had initially thought the computer room was to the right as per your intel, but when he pointed out some things on the maps, his tips matched your gut instincts, so you headed left.
You came across two armed guards which was a struggle to take them out, but you managed, huffing a piece of your hair off your dampened sweaty face. You looked down at the unconscious men and kicked one of them with your boot, but they didn't stir.
You grabbed a few of their weapons and tucked them in your pockets and headed further to find the computer room.
You heard loud rumbles of thunder along with the steady pounding of rain, while you navigated the deserted hallways. You turned down a darkened hallway and found the computer room you were supposed to find. You evened your breath as best you could to calm yourself, then stormed through the room, kicking the door open with your boot.
A man was sitting in front of a computer, and before he could react, you took him out.
"There." You were pleased with yourself.
You grabbed the external hard drive which was hooked up to a computer and stuffed it in your hip bag before you left, making sure to deploy the viruses that would corrupt their networks. The Avengers intel team gave you drives to leave behind so no one could use the computers at the base.
You heard them at work when you grabbed your gun and left, lurking back the way you came.
You made your way out of the base and into the ongoing stormy night when you noticed four large vans pull up with men unloading themselves. You were in full view as they started firing at you with their weapons.
"Fuck it all." You shot some rounds at the men, reloaded, and made your way to hide behind a partial wall.
"Stupid intel team." You muttered.
One of the four guards from earlier must have tripped a silent alarm before you got to them. Rookie move on your part for not taking them out sooner.
You were about to confront the men when you saw a figure off in the distance.
"Who is that?" You said out loud, firing a few rounds into the crowd of armed men as bullets whizzed past your head. The man appeared larger than life, running towards the fight you found yourself in. He wore all black and seemed to be fast on his feet.
"Holy shit." You watched him take out four men at once.
Rain pelted you as the thunder ranged on, lightning flashing and with every flash that lit up the dark night around you, your hero seemed to relish in the electricity in the air. He clashed with a few men, taking them out with quick punches and direct kicks, grunts and groans were heard as he fought his way through the crowd.
"Shit, he's strong and fast."
You stopped briefly to watch him move with ease as he took out more men. You were glad you had someone strong on your side. You were starting to tire from the late night and the mental focus you had to have while you snapped out of it and took on the last of the vans that pulled up.
This hero had given you a fresh outtake on the fight, while you managed to take out the remaining men who had pulled up.
You huffed and puffed out air while you leaned against the brick wall, rubbing the water off your face when your hero appeared on your left.
"Y/n?"
"Bucky?"
You squinted your eyes at him.
"What are you doing here?"
You leaned over and placed your hands on your thighs.
"Thought you could use some help."
"Thanks." You were annoyed he came, but in all honestly, glad he was there. You're not sure how you could have fended off the extra agents on your own as they would have for sure caught up to you.
"Are you ok?" He asked, breathing heavy from his excursion.
"Yeah...Just tired, little sore too." You stretched your back and stood straight.
"Come on, let's get out of here." Bucky's eyes were bright and focused as he looked around the abandoned base now littered with bodies.
🦸🏻♂️
You made it to your safe house, well, it was more like a safe room seeing as how it was the top floor in an abandoned townhouse. There were a small couch and bed, table, and a relatively stocked kitchen with hot plate and mini fridge. The bathroom was tucked in a corner and only had cold water. Whatever. You've stayed in worse places. You turned and faced Bucky once you were both inside.
"So, you didn't think I could pull this off?" You placed your weapons on the small table.
"Well...I...Uh..."
You glared at him, making him uncomfortable.
"Did they not think I could do this?"
"Yes!"
You gave him a look.
"I mean...yes, they thought you were perfectly fine to complete the mission. I did this. I came here. Not them. Not that I didn't believe you were going to fail, I just wanted to come as back up. I normally don't like it when people are on their own. That's all." Bucky shrugged.
You eyed him but nodded.
You understood where he was coming from. There was a few times you were in his shoes and quietly backed up a few of the other agents when they first started. You just wanted them to be safe.
"Thank you." You finally said, putting Bucky out of his nervous thoughts.
"Really?"
"Yup. Thanks. You're my hero Bucky."
He blushed a little then smirked, clearing his throat.
"So, what do we do about this one bed situation?" He stepped closer to you making your skin heat.
Sebastian Stan on playing Bucky Barnes in Thunderbolts.
"I love when they allow me to play a little bit of the duality. That‘s what I love about Bucky. I love that even though he‘s come a long way, he‘s still carrying his whole life experience with him. He‘s not a totally different person. He‘s always going to have those things that made him who he is, good and bad, and it gives a different flavor to the choices that you make as an actor.
And this, it feels like this is a very similar group. They could all go both ways. They‘re running away from the thing that scares them. They are running away from themselves. They are running away from the pain they didn‘t deal with, the guilt that they‘ve accumulated, from being out in the world and doing terrible things."
