Blues Pioneer Robert Johnson
Robert Johnson was a Blues legend and originator. Born in the Deep South - Mississipi - he sang on street corners, to handfuls of people. His records didn't sell. During his lifetime he was penniless and unknown. Legend has it, after flirting with a married woman at a village Blues concert, Johnson was handed a drink by the woman - poisoned by the husband. He died at 27. Since, he's been credited with being the originator of Delta Blues. Someone's found all his recordings and put them on disk - listen here.
Legendary Blue's godfather Robert Johnson. Circa 1930's.
Age of Death: 27. Cause: Poisoned by jealous husband.
Giesemann & Schulz - Berlin Clubs, Morning After Clubs (starting top): Rechenzentrum, Dice Club, unknown, Tresor. Visit the project here: http://www.tenhaafprojects.com/giesemannschulz.php

Roll Deep - Together
A classic.
We never thought we'd do this - dropping a (new) Drake track.
Despite doing a Kanye/Jay-Z/countless others, getting famous and bawling about Cristal, supermodels and cars you haven't heard of... it's hard not to enjoy this. Great instrumental. Download follows the Soundcloud link.
Typesun - The PL
A warm, soulful yet tense number from Bristol native Typesun. From the outset, staccato horns burst into a Cee Lo Green-esque flurry. However, this enthusiasm quickly drains and is replaced with suspense, the atmospheric aura lifted slowly by the subtle rise in tension, courtesy of some well-delivered, highly-strung vocals and tentative instrumental work. Great stuff.
Marshall Jefferson - Mushrooms (Fritz Wentink Remix)
'Mushrooms' was originally a 1996 classic deep house joint with lush chords, tight percussion and an utterly mesmerising vocal by house godfather himself, Marshall Jefferson. Since that point the hypnotic spoken verse has been the subject of remixes by the likes of Trevino, Justin Martin and in this case, little-known German producer Frtiz Wentink. The beat remains sharp and electronic, but the melodies maintain - if not build upon - the disorientating feel of that vocal.
Moodymann - Why Do U Feel
Been listening to this all week. About time it was put up. Dreamy, melancholic, and with that Detroit twist. Words really can't do this justice - listen.
CLASSIC: Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place
The epitome of cool.
Four Tet - For These Times
Keiran Hebden must go down in 10 years as one of this country's most pioneering and outright unique producers, consistently delivering an innovative sound, drawing from more genres than most producers would conceive possible. Peng. This (very) new cut is out on the forthcoming NonPlus+ compilation. Tense, moody, a great bubbler.
Sir Gilles Peterson Visits Leeds
Gilles Peterson is one of the most important figures contemporary modern music. If you love music, this man matters. If you're anywhere near Leeds, catch the rare opportunity to see Gilles playing at Beat Bar on the 26th Jan. Tickets and information are available here.
Omar-S - S.E.X. (AOL Remix)
Functional, raw, simple and soulful. A track described with those words is only ever gonna be a bomb.
Typical Omar-S, a favourite that wouldn't be out of place on the similarly peng Drive soundtrack, this one flew under the radar last year. That soulful vocal moan makes us sweat heavier than Michael Bazzamore at a pool party. Classic.
Odetta - Hit or Miss
"Rosa Parks was her No. 1 fan, and Martin Luther King Jr. called her the queen of American folk music." - Time Magazine
Strong.
Quite simply the best mix we've heard all year and one of the very best we've heard full stop. Deep, stomping, intense, frenetic, soulful.. there's something for everyone here, yet the vibes remain so unique. Typical Jackmaster.
If you haven't got plans on NYD, he's playing in Leeds at Faversham. Buy tickets here - highly recommended http://tinyurl.com/NYDtickets.
