One of your hands gently brushed through the soft lengths of Skylarâs hair as she nuzzled her face deeper into your shirt. You could feel her tears soaking down to your skin, but you figured it best not to bring too much attention to that at the moment. It was rare for Skylar to let herself unravel like this, and you figured it would be best for her to take some time to just⊠let everything out for once.
It had been a rough few weeks. Skylar had been working herself half to death, realizing and talking to a whole number of new objects. It was certainly a great thingâmore objects coming to life, bringing more love into the bleak world outsideâalthough it had taken quite the toll on Skylar.
Youâd been messaging her for days, pleading to take more breaks and to set aside time to care for herself as well, but clearly she was still getting used to being more human than object. You had also tried explaining to her that humans are fairly fragile creatures, but oftentimes the best learning experiences are well⊠the ones you experience.
Skylar had complained of a horrible aching pain in her head when she arrived at your door, already crying. You explained to her that it was likely a headache induced by stress and offered her some common painkillers. She was a bit unsure of the medication at first, but ultimately took them. She trusts you after all. Turning your head to check your clock, you notice the meds should be taking effect by now.
You sigh softly as you feel Skylarâs weight sink into you more as her body begins to relax. She mumbles something into your chest that you canât make out, and opt to simply continue combing through her hair. After a while you notice her breathing even out into rhythmic waves, which in turn make you relax as well.
â
Skylar stirs awake, waking you up in turn, and you look at each other groggily. The next thing out of Skylarâs mouth confuses you so much you need her to repeat herself just to be sure you heard her right.
âSorryâŠâ She mutters again.
âFor what?â Completely dumbfounded, you raise yourself into a sitting position. Skylar situates herself next to you, head down as she fidgets with her hair.
âSorry for⊠being such a bother⊠coming over uninvited just to cry all over you.â Sheâs still sulking, refusing to meet your gaze. She moves from her hair to one arm in her hand; self soothing by rubbing her thumb back and forth across her skin. You sit in stunned silence for a moment. Your unintended hesitation spurring Skylar into more anxious rambles.
âI-I should be able to take care of myself! I⊠Iâm sorry forââ
You grab her, gently, and the action startles her enough to look into your eyes for a moment. Youâre looking at her with such compassion and understanding it nearly floors the poor woman. She stares back, frozen.
âDonât you ever apologize for having feelings,â You start, gently rubbing your thumbs across her arms as she had been doing earlier.
âYouâre allowed to feel heavy things, and express them! You can always express them to me! Iâll never judge you for taking up space.â Your words are already making tears well up in both of your eyes, and you continue.
âYouâre not a bother, and you never have been. I donât know how to express to you how lucky and honored I am that you trust me and feel safe enough around me to let yourself decompress like that. That means so much to me, Skylar.â Youâre holding her cheek gently, wiping a stray tear.
Skylar is completely taken off guard with your compassion and reassurance, so much so that she simply lets herself fall into your embrace again, asking in a small voice, âCould you brush your fingers through my hair again?â
Enveloping her in your arms, you oblige immediately, giving her scalp a soft scratch before gently sliding your hand through her silky hair once more.

fluff fic, realization/ end of game spoilers, not much for content warnings besides breif mention of dissociation and perhaps slightly ooc skylar (i tried my best)
Sitting on your couch, you found it hard to relax. Everything was so quiet now⊠too quiet. You didnât realize until now just how much youâd gotten used to the cacophony of the objects around you. Every day had something new in store for you, your home had been so rich with life, but now your dwelling felt more like a house than ever. Cold, distant, quiet. You sighed, leaning further into your couch, dialogue from the show on your TV drawing out into incoherent mutterings. You missed them. The objects you grew to know so well. Those you loved, and still love, all your friends you made⊠you even found yourself somewhat missing the objects you least enjoyed the company of.
You kept telling yourself youâd get used to it, this quiet, after all, it is how you had lived your life for countless years before receiving the dateviators. You never were good at lying to yourself, though, and the more you thought and overthought, the more you found yourself slipping. Well, until your phone started blasting off, lighting up with a familiar vibration. Someone was calling you. Picking up your phone, you saw the image of Skylar, a bright smile on her face; her saved profile picture in your contacts. Your head cleared a bit as you put the device up to your ear,
âSkylar!â You greeted before being abruptly cut off.
âThank goodness you picked up! Iâve been knocking at your door for a while!â
âY-you have?â
âYes! For a moment I thought you may not have been home, but then I remembered itâs youââ
âOh my god, Skylar, Iâm so sorry!â You barely register her teasing as you rush to your front door, unlocking it and opening to see the pink and yellow haired beauty before you. In that moment you let all composure go, gathering the woman in a tight embrace.
âOh, Skylar, itâs so good to see you! How have you been?â Tears were streaming down your face as you pulled away from the hug, holding her forearms gently. She fixed you with a concerned, yet knowing look.
âWhy donât we go inside and we can chat, yeah? Itâs hot as shit out here.â
âRight, sorry.â You step aside to let Skylar in, flustered at how scatterbrained you were.
As she walked in you led her to the couch you had just been sitting at, âSorry about that, I just⊠wasnât expecting you.â You scratched the back of your neck as Skylar set some things down on your coffee table.
âOh, really?â She jested, âI hadnât noticed.â She chuckled, flashing you with one of her signature charming smiles. Her look alone helped you relax, melting a little.
âTo answer your previous question, though, Iâve been doing well!â She beamed, âThe new dateviators have been working great! So many more objects have been realized and are out there now living their BEST lives!â Her smile softens as you sit down next to her.
âI couldnât have done it without you⊠thank you.â
You rest your other hand on top of hers, smiling softly back, âOf course, Skylar. I know how much this all means to you. Iâm so happy to hear things have been going well.â You hum and let out a sigh as you hold her gaze for a moment.
âItâs so nice to see you.â You start, âItâs been⊠rough acclimating to how quiet the house has become.â You admit, eyes dropping. You feel a soft hand grace your cheek and Skylar gently pulls you toward her.
âIâm sorry to hear that,â She says softly, âWhat do you say to making up for lost time now, hmm?â The cheeky expression on her face lighting you up inside.
âIâd love that very much. What do you say to vegginâ out on the couch? Watch something and perhaps⊠cuddling?â You finish a bit sheepishly. You were certainly out of practice with this, but Skylar only seemed to find your flustered state endearing. She was holding your gaze softly, yet so intensely, for a moment you wondered if she had even heard you. However, before you could ask again, she nodded decisively.
âSounds awesome to me!â She was beaming at you again. You couldnât help but smile yourself before planting a quick peck on her cheek. Peeling yourself off the couch, you headed toward the kitchen, opening your fridge.
âUhh⊠Thereâs not much here Iâm gonna be honestâŠâ You chuckle nervously, âThereâs some cheese, fruit and chocolate, though⊠What say you to a cheese plate?â You call out so she can hear you from the living room.
âOooh! Works for me!â She calls back. You assemble a fairly passable looking cheese plate, accented with some various fruits and crackers. On a separate plate you lay the chocolate out decoratively, nothing wrong with a little flair! Itâs a special occasion after all! You make your way back, setting the fixings on the coffee table wherever thereâs room before disappearing off to the back of the house again. Moments later you return with a bottle of wine and two glasses.
âWine?â You ask with a smirk. Skylar gives you an approving look and you pour her a nice glass and then plop yourself back onto the couch, scooting yourself into her side. She lays her head affectionately against yours as you flick through the channels, looking for something that captures both your attention. Your body relaxing as you take in the much needed comforting night ahead of you.
