 This is how you do a FRIDAY LONG BOOZY LUNCH 👊🏼 Indian food that's creative, colourful and full of flavour is hard to find, but MANJITS at the wharf has nailed it. I've been a fan of the more traditional Manjits in Balmain for years, but this new venue is younger, more vibrant. They have lunch specials for those on the go, but if time isn't an issue, order up a feast and don't miss the Indian rosé, it's a treat.

And those TATTER TOTS kill, making this one hell of a veggie delight.

This burger is a BEAST! I’ve yet to finish a veggie burger from BL Burgers. The deep-fried patty Chickpea & Kumara Burger with spiced yoghurt, coral, tomato & coriander in a fluffy bun is immense. I’ve added the deep fried cheese patty, because YUM. This burger doesn’t come with fries, but the chips at BL are just as legendary as the burgers.

This surprising new comer to the Sydney burger scene is definitely high on my list of most desirable mushroom burger. The deep fried shroom gives this burger a delicious point-of-difference over it’s rivals. I stand by my comment that the Breaking Bad theme of Anonymous is more bad than breaking, but the burgers are totally worth it.

Bang Bang

This burger is E V E R Y T H I N G. The rumours of unassuming Surry Hills cafe being the new ‘it’ burger place are all true. The veggie burger at Bang Bang is a corn fritter with halloumi, caramalised onion, tomato and lettuce. The caramelised onion really brings back fond childhood memories for me and ties in the flavours of the fritter and cheese. I love eating messy food and while this burger held it’s own, there was a level of filth that I adore.

This tiny cafe perched at the top end of Reservoir st is worth the uphill walk, considering it a pre-burger workout. 

This burger wins the award for the best hangover cure. You’ll have to wait till midday to order one, but if you can hold out, this will cure all that ails you.

Mary’s burgers are BOSS and the shroom burger is no exception. This is the burger that other burgers want to be when they grow up. The greatest invention of 2015 was undoubtably the Mary’s home delivery service offered by Deliveroo.  Working through your lunch break has never been so enticing and weekend hangovers are now 100% more rewarding.

The original is always the best, so for the full Mary’s treatment you have to get yourself to Newtown for some heavy metal fun.

Burger Project (various locations)

When a world renowned chef opens a burger restaurant, you take notice. Neil Perry (from Rockpool Bar and Grill) launched Burger Project in Sydney to rapturous applause and hasn't abated since. The mushroom burger is a crumbed shroom, packed with flavour. Burger Project also wins awards for exceptional chips (get the spicy salt for an extra kick!)

This large open-air bar in the heart of Seminyak is all about taco's, tequila, and top fun. This Mexican style bar is run by the same team behind iconic Bondi bar, The Bucket List. This Balinese cousin of a Bondi favourite has the same over the top styling and attentive service. This place is the first stop for a night of Bintangs when you first arrive on the island paradise that is Bali.

Oh to be by the sea.... Sea Circus is neither a circus, nor by the sea, but its beach-side vibe and bright colour scheme makes it really stand out. Sea Circus is my favourite brunch spot in Seminyak, with the best Bloody Mary's in town.

Revolver Coffee

After a night of partying, Bali style, the first stop the morning after the night before is Revolver Espresso. Located on a laneway near Seminyak Square, you'd be forgiven for missing the understated entrance upon first glance, but once you go through the ranch style doors you enter an oasis of air-conditioning and great coffee. I'm a big fan of the Killer Chiller, an iced coffee with lashing of whipped cream; it's heavenly.

Corner House

Big, breezy and capturing the cafe market at this part of town (close to the top of Sunset), Corner House encapsulates a lot of elements from my other favourite Seminyak destinations... They have coffee from revolver, a brunch menu to rival Sea Circus and an upstairs bar with top notch cocktails and daily happy hour. Corner house can be a great spot to grab a much needed salad, when you've eaten too much Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice). Corner House works any time of day.

Nook

It doesn't come much more relaxed that Balinese cafe, Nook. This cute, open-air cafe has a similar view over the rice fields as nearly restaurant Sardine, without the fine dining price tag. The food here is simple and the beer is cold... you can't ask for much more.

La Luciola

It may seem a little odd to dine at an Italian restaurant in Indonesia, but La Lucciola is a perennial favourite for visitors to Bali. Set in a large, open-air barn structure, both the amazing food and beachside locale make it the perfect place for sunset drinks.

Mama San

No trip to Seminyak is complete with out a meal at Mamasan. The food here is absolutely BURSTING with flavour, and meats melt at the touch of your fork. You'll need to book ahead from Mamasan, but it is totally worth it.

Ginger Moon

The tapas style menu of Ginger Moon never fails to disappoint. Located right in the heart of Seminyak, Ginger Moon is a go to for lunch or dinner, alone or with friends. The food here is consistently good and reasonably priced.

Tiger Palm

Tiger Palm is the latest offering from the crew behind the hugely successful Mamasan and Sarong restaurants. The cuisine here is more Malay based than the others, and the interior is just as beautiful. We had a few issues with some of the dishes, and the staff were happy to replace them. This place is still finding it’s feet, and when it does I’m sure it will be just as successful as it’s siblings.

Jari Meanari

Jari Menari claims to give the best massages in Bali, and I for one think they are right. This calming oasis in the heart of Seminyak gives an exceptional massage, with the option of a 4 handed massage (2 practitioners). Book ahead and plan to go everyday to this gem.

The Bali Tailor

This leather emporium is a total godsend! These custom made leather goods are a fraction of the price back home. Choose a style off the rack or design your own leather jacket, handbag or shoes. It takes them 4 days to create, so go early in your trip to give yourself time. I got a stunning biker jacket that I designed by combining 2 of their styles. I love it!

Harryfields / Mosman

Mosman isn't normally a place you'd associate with fresh faced young guns and hip cafes but it’s happening, and it's BY THE WATER!

Located on the ferry wharf in Mosman bay, this small cafe is so much more than commuter coffee, although with Pablo & Rusty’s beans being brewed, you know the coffee is excellent.

Open 7 days a week, Harryfields have brunch and lunch dishes to sooth your soul (and cure a hangover), including an immense double cheese burger (pictured).

The residents of Mosman should be patting their backs, cause this place is a keeper.

Sasa Sestic / The Coffee Man

Australian Barista champion, Sasa Sestic is The Coffee Man. Born in Serbia, Sestic hails from Canberra where he owns successful trio of coffee shops, ONA. Winner of the 2015 Australian Barista Championship, Sestic went on to compete for the title of World Barista Champion, a journey that was documented by Roland Fraval & Jeff Hann for their new movie, The Coffee Man.

The Coffee Man follows Sestic from the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia, to Seattle, Washington, for the World Barista Championship. More than just a film about the quest for the perfect cup of coffee, this is an intense and emotional film that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Brainwave Cafe  - website

A recent addition to bustling Ultimo, Brainwave Cafe offers much more than just your standard cafe cuisine. Rather, it draws inspiration from various Asian culinary traditions, including Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese, as well as with a nod to more traditional Aussie dishes. The coffee here is exceptional, being one of the few Sydney cafe’s to use Sestic’s own coffee, ONA.

No exceptions, no distractions; Dan Yee and Shoji Sasaare masters of their craft. While there a few spots to sit, you’re best to stand at the beautiful oak bar to enjoy your espresso… it’s the European way.

The Grounds of Alexandria took the Sydney cafe scene by storm when they opened in 2012. Bakery, florist, cafe and restaurant, they roast their own coffee and even have a petting zoo for the young ones. The Coffee Academy allows The Grounds coffee experts to experiment with different roasting profiles and techniques based on individual types of coffee and beans. The Grounds now supply coffee to a number of Sydney cafes, so a coffee from The Grounds doesn’t necessarily have to include to the busy Alexandria cafe.

This secluded waterside cafe is located at the ferry wharf to Scotland Island - an offshore community  in Pittwater - and embodies relaxed Sydney dining worthy of a day trip.

Tokyo Bird / Surry Hills

This tiny Japanese bar is tucked away on a backstreet of Surry Hills; once you find it, you'll be blown away by its charm and elegance. The tiny little kitchen bustles with Yakitori style food (small bites on sticks) and incredible cocktails. 

The house specialty is Japanese Whisky, but the cocktails don't stop there. This week Tokyo Bird are showcasing whisky from around the world ahead of World Whisky Day this Saturday.

 One of only a few bars open on a Monday night, it's a good time to try this Sydney small bar.

Pu’er / Danks St, Waterloo

It’s rare than you get to eat dumplings in the sun, but Pu’er on Danks has shunned the windowless yum cha rooms for an open-air experience like no other. This modern Asian eatery resembles a Chinese tea-house, with freshly made dumplings and extensive menu of Chinese teas.

This modern restaurant has the infamous BAO-gers and non-traditional sides like Kim-chi and tofu fries, both of which are absolutely delicious.The mushroom pot stickers were a hit, as were the bright pink prawn steamed dumplings. 

It’s posh yum-cha, and I like it.

Surly’s / American Bar & BBQ // Surry Hills

Southern style American BBQ is the staple of this big Surry Hills boozer, SURLY’S. A very welcome addition to this part of town, Surly’s is bought to us by the clever clogs behind Riley St Garage and Bondi Rd Canadian bar, The Stuffed Beaver.

Smoked meats, brisket, mac and cheese, nachos and blooming onion (deep fired whole onion), it doesn’t get much better than this!! Throw in a strong list of American beers, killer cocktails and some of the most delightful staff in town, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a night at Surly’s.

Lunchtime is all about BURGERS, and cheap ones at that. Grab a couple of colleagues and get to this ‘beer hall’ space for a lunch time to remember, that won’t break the bank.

Plant Gallery / Vegan // Bondi

RAW food is having movement, with vegan eateries popping up around town. No suburb embraces healthy eating more than image conscious Bondi, which is becoming the new home of vegan cuisine. 

 THE PLANT GALLERY on Bondi rd claim they will 'alter the way you see raw, vegan, sugar free, gluten free food'... Which can only be a good thing. No food is heated above 48 degrees, preserving minerals and nutrients, and a lot of effort is put into the pH balance of each dish. 

 Top of the pic is the vegetable curry and zucchini spaghetti is below. They are surprisingly tasty, although I don't think I was prepared for the dishes to be served cold (although it makes sense now that I think about it.) The BYO wine is keeping us nice and warm, as is my smugness about being healthy 😉

Morris / Paddington

A little bit of Redfern in Paddington. Meet MORRIS, the relaxed corner cafe from the team behind Scout's Honour. 

 The food is outstanding! These are the house-made beans, with pickled veg, feta and leaves. Such simple food done incredibly well. I'm reminded of Cornersmith in Marrickville, in a leafier surround.

Morris also have incredible salads and sandwiches to take-away - much like Scout's - for those that are time poor and looking for a next level salad for lunch. I'm super impressed

Erskine Villa / Erskineville

THIS is how you hangover 🍟🍟

The tiny suburb of Erskineville is booming of late, with pubs and cafes aplenty; I've taken a shining to busy corner cafe, ERSKINE VILLA. Not only does this cafe turn into a gin bar at night ✔️ but they also serve up a tasty brunch. 

 This pulled mushroom burger is bloody tasty, and you MUST order the off-menu item, POUTINE. Served with egg and blood pudding (we asked for it on the side) this is a sure fire hangover cure, in a friendly surround.

Drake / Bondi 

Open for breakfast • lunch • dinner, Drake epitomises Bondi dining. The menu is seasonal and light, there's a take-away coffee window and stunning interior. If you like Nomad (Surry Hills), Cho Cho San (Potts Point) or The Butler (Potts Point), then Drake is right up your alley. It's casual fine dining with a hint of hipster (the good kind). 

Tip: go with a group so you can sample more of the dishes on offer.

Automata / Chippendale

Sydney welcomed the recently renovated Old Clare Hotel with open arms, in a suburb that has gone from strength to strength in the recent years, Chippendale. This superb revamp is not just about the stunning hotel rooms, but it’s also given us a high-end new ‘eat street’, championed by the stunning Automata.

Over the weekend I was treated to the incredible degustation from Automata and was blown away by a the delicate dishes packed with uniquely paired flavours and impressive wine list of natural and organic wines. 

Automate serves a changing five course menu of seasonal dishes, and they also cater to special dietary requirements.

A long, boozy luncheon at Automata is a slice of Sydney perfection; it’s experiential dining at it’s finest, and definitely worth trying out.

Sydney has it’s first PROFIT FOR PURPOSE cafe, GRATIA. This Surry Hills cafe donates all profits to charity. All of them, and you can pick the local charity that some of your proceeds go to. What a place!

GUILTY AS CHARGED.

The ‘Burger Lord’ of the insta-net, @jimmysburgers, has added another notch to his well adorned belt with GUILTY, a spin off of his hugely successful Melbourne burger bar, Easey’s.

Guilty is a fully fledged bar, with a strong cocktail list, beautifully displayed beer taps - including Sydney’s first Melbourne Bitter on tap - and rocking good tunes. Much like popular Newtown bar, Mary’s, this is a bar first, but you’d be crazy NOT to have a burger while you’re there. The list of sides is as impressive as the burgers, with tater tots, loaded chilli fries and my favourite, mac & cheese *drool We love having little bits of Melbourne in Sydney, especially when the bit is this good.
