Sleep Token — Thread The Needle Interpretation and Thoughts
What's up, you sleepy nerds? Surprise, I'm alive! And fun fact, once upon a time (actually like November 2024 during the last ST EU Tour) I started writing down my own thoughts and interpretations of Sleep Token songs. Back then I got through One, their first EP, and then just… forgot about it and I would like to pick it back up occasionally. It's a nice practice, it makes me slow down and shuts up my brain for a little by filling it with my favorite silly little band. So I thought, maybe if I post the (honestly not really deep but maybe enjoyable to read) brain vomit I wrote down about the songs, it will motivate me a little! Have fun with it, don't take it too seriously, this is all for fun, and I am by far no Sleep Token expert, and feel free to share your thoughts on the songs as well. :)
Additional info: I went through this by writing down the lyrics and reading them a few times without the music, noting my first thoughts, and then listening to the song and watching the MV if there is on. I also listened to the corresponding episode of the Sleep Study Podcast, thought about the interpretation of The Host, and tried to incorporate any of their thoughts if they aligned with my own. Please check out the podcast. I don't currently know if it's still active, but it is really worth a listen! After that I phrased out my thoughts to the song in combination with the stuff from the MV.
Now let's get into it!
Lyrics to Thread The Needle
Bury me inside this Labyrinth bed We can feel that time is Dilated We can spend the night in Fascination You can thread the needle Time and time again You turn the lights down Come on and find out You turn the lights down Come on and find out Something to confide in Something to erase Just look at where we're lying An invisible space We can spend the night in Fascination You could thread the needle Time and time again You turn the lights down Come on and find out You turn the lights down Come on and find out
Interpretation
Sometimes you fall in love with the idea of a person instead of seeing who they truly are or what their real interests might be. You lay all your trust in them, worship them, to take your pain away and finally feel better. Feel something at all. You fall for them, but also fall for their possible trap. Deep down, you know that it's not good for you, but it feels too good to resist.
Vessel is meeting Sleep, letting the god take over, giving up control in exchange for the ease of his pain. Sleep is giving him the love he longs for, in exchange for his innocence.
In the music video, Vessel holds an apple toward the camera as if he is offering it to the viewer, possibly even to Sleep. In later clips of the video, the apple is replaced with something that looks like a heart, a real one. He is quite literally offering his heart, his life, and love to the deity. The apple reminds me of the garden of Eden. Vessel picked the apple to come and find out.
Love at first sight, first interaction, giving yourself to someone you barely know, it's dangerous. What you see in someone isn't always what they are. Even after many attempts. Time and time again.
This is where the spiral starts. Vessel is born.
I hope you enjoyed this, I certainly like thinking about the songs this way! Let me know your own thoughts if you like. Maybe I missed something, but like I said, these interpretations are over a year old lol
What happens when you and your friends are insane and love Sleep Token?
That's right, you make an art book with over 100+ incredibly talented artists with song and band artwork. And it's out digitally for everyone to enjoy! Worship
Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important.
You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.
i did the thing
Vessel is a cleric, II is a rogue, III is a bard and IV is a druid. I will not elaborate.

being a sleep token fan is lowkey embarrassing because what do you mean the name of my favourite drummer is pronounced TWO
What do you call it when you're a girl or woman but also you don't feel human but you also like all the girly things but you also feel kinda weird when you think of yourself as a woman or are being called one but masculine terms feel more wrong, but gender-neutral terms kinda too? Like, when it's more "Yes I exist in a female body" but you feel more like an alien or ghost than a human woman?

have you ever heard about the alterhuman community? (people who identify as non-human creatures)
No but that's gives me something to read up on!

also very interesting to me that Fall For Me's creature is a whale, and missing limbs has a whalefall. call and response, like The Offering and Sugar in Sundowning
especially because gardens are this running motif - most obviously with the garden of Eden, but there's also "You are a garden entwined with all, you are the silence on sacred shores". Garden = stability, lush, solid land beneath Vessel's feet, contrasted with the ocean = chaos, confusion, ultimate perdition. His tomb.
So when he says "With my love as your garden, won't you fall for me" he's trying to convince this other party that he can provide that stability that will allow them to flourish - so laugh at Provider all you want, but it's just more directly expressing something that Vessel has been saying for several albums already
At the same time, it's not all bright - because the album is about descension, it's the lowest point of Vessel's journey, the darkest hour before dawn breaks. The whale is diving, and he describes his "fall" from Eden as "diving into crystal waters". He was not thrown out, but left bit by bit as his eyes were opened to the world beyond this utopic garden.
So in beckoning this other party to "fall for him" he is really asking them to fall with him. Because the waters are deep and dark, and in the "screaming silence" he needs to know he's not alone. It's very telling in my opinion that they chose to give each song a depth to signify this descension, and Atlantic - most likely about a suicide attempt - is at the top, while Missing Limbs - about lost/unrequited love and being left - is at the very bottom
The deepest point on the planet, where there's next to no life and no light penetrates. Where a whale's bones would arrive picked fully clean and never be seen or disturbed again. Love and the absence thereof will hurt worse than death, because you are forced to keep reckoning with a life of that person's absence - they will be your phantom limb
And so I think the whalefall represents both that process of grieving your love's loss and of coming to terms with it - because he hits (literal) rock bottom and then follows it up with TMBTE, a meditation on being changed and heading back up to the surface, culminating with EIA - an arrival to a new garden, new solid land beneath his feet. No longer Eden the "glory of innocence", because in order to stay in Eden one would have to never live at all, to exist in perpetual ignorance. But Arcadia is a similarly utopic land, only it's on earth - it's a possible goal, it's something tangible and something one must reach through their own efforts instead of being born there.
He had to go through this pain to "become someone new", and that took killing "the man he was the moment we left off" and crawling out of his corpse something more mature and stronger - like a moth or butterfly, another important motif for the band
it's just. all very well put together ok.
just watched a disgusting video on tiktok, where the creator used Caramel, of all songs, to hop on to the "misheard lyrics" trend and sexualize Vessel in such a disrespectful way... and when she got called out by one person, she immediately got disrespectful again. people even commented they rather want to sing along her version at the concerts - admitting they want to harass him publicly again for his private parts.
again: CARAMEL, OF ALL SONGS. DID WE FUCKING LEARN NOTHING?!
if I remember correctly, something similar happened at Red Rocks (I think? definitely ToG tour tho) where someone screamed at him how "it" moved when Vessel danced so he stopped?
I mean, maybe I am overreacting, maybe I am wrong here... but honestly I stand my ground, I think it's disgusting as fuck.
screenshot under the cut, no I did not censor her face or name, she posted it herself so why should I care? and if the person sees it on here: hello, I don't like u, u can fuck off thx
Hey, so, that's not a misheard lyric! That's actually just forced cause this woman WANTS to sexualize him! And it's fucking disgusting! :D
Misheard lyrics are something like the bad baddie/bad body debate or spinning eyes/spitting ice, both from Provider, but this????? USING CARAMEL OF ALL SONGS???? Nah, girl, that's just harassment. You just want to make this man uncomfortable. There's no way in hell that she doesn't know that it would make him uncomfortable.
Honestly, valid crash out about this. I'm crashing out with you cause wtf.
