Throwaway comment that I think about too much, maybe.
See. See, it's a promise.
One, if I remember right, I assume he made to himself. A personal vow of sorts.
Mercy. Consideration. Humaneness. It's not an intrinsic part of his character. It's not who Castiel is. It's not what Heaven made.
It's a choice. One he has to remind himself of, one he has practice at, over and over—until it can come to him as easily as his ruthlessness, his brutality.
And that? Very appealing to me, personally.
When Castiel is kind? It's because he chose to be, not because he is. He wouldn't need a promise like this if he is.
I love characters like that. I really do.
This post is making rounds again so.
“Good men don’t need rules.”
An important addition, to me.
Castiel-posting some more out of spite:
Let’s talk Castiel/Doctor parallels, shall we?
1. Cosmic beings. Immortal, powerful. Meant to be distant observers or enforcers. Do not stay that way.
2. Lovers of humanity (and certain humans in particular). Deeply curious and attached, sometimes to their detriment.
3. Divine rebels who rejected the cold logic of their species or superiors. Empathy over blind obedience to order.
4. Killers haunted by their catastrophic choices and the role they had in the destruction of their people and many others.
5. Lonely figures who crave connection but are doomed to outlast those they love (if they don’t die first).
6. Regeneration and resurrection, anyone?

one of my absolute favorites!
sam has to deal with his big bro, dean, being turned into a kitten by a witch:
when you think about it teenagers of the next generation will never get to experience a cw show with 7+ seasons and 22 episodes per season. they will never know what it's like to be insanely obsessed with a mediocre show with mediocre writing and mediocre acting (with one really good actor carrying the show on their backs). they will never know the feeling of fighting weekly in the trenches for your ship only for the writers to screw you over. they will never be so increasingly disappointed by the worsening writing choices as the seasons progress and they will never know what it's like to watch the worst series finale after investing years into a show. and that is the biggest tragedy.
Lots of writing advice on tumblr. It's been years since I've written fiction in a serious way, but I did write a couple of (bad) novels in my early 20's, a bunch of short stories, and also a few hundred thousand words of LARP writing, and I do have a bacherlor's of science in creative writing (lol).
From what I can tell, there are only three universally applicable pieces of writing advice:
Read a lot (mandatory)
Show your writing to people (mandatory)
Have something wrong with you in a way that is impossible to articulate except by writing a novel (optional)
I think this one is also important:
4. write
if he’s a serial killer💕, then what’s the worst💕 that can happen to a girl💕 who’s already hurt💕? i’m already hurt💕. if he’s as bad as they say💕 then i guess i’m cursed💕, looking into his eyes💕, i think he’s already hurt💕. he’s already hurt💕.
