National Garage Door Safety Month!

In recognition of Garage Door Safety Month, everyone here at Thompson’s Garage Door would like you to know some things about garage door safety!

First off, as many as you may know, but not realize is, the garage door is the largest and most heaviest moving object in your home, so it’s important to keep it running properly to diminish the possibility of injuries or problems.

The garage door and garage door opener are not something to forget about while thinking about home safety. They are dangerous if misused, and can cause serious injury or even death.  It is important to have routine maintenance for preventative care of your door and opener!  Never try to repair your garage door’s springs or cables. These are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury if installed or repaired by someone other than a professional garage door technician.

Children should never be allowed to play with the garage door or its operating system. Children should never stand, run or play under or near any garage door, especially when the door is open or moving.  An important acronym to teach children is DOOR, easy enough, right? DOORS are heavy – never play or run near the garage door when it’s in motion OPENERS are for adults – never play with the button on the wall that opens/closes the door OUCH! – don’t ever touch any moving part of the door, fingers could get hurt! REMOTES – never play with the remote control in the car. 

Never try to walk or run under a moving garage door, especially if there are no photo eyes.  Which if you do not have photo eyes on you garage door currently, give us a call and we can install them for you!  It is a VERY important safety feature.

When opening or closing the garage door, always keep the door in view until the door is fully opened or fully closed. This is both for safety and security. For added security, you can add a motion sensor light to the outside of your home to prevent unwanted intruders, and also frost the windows on your garage door (if you have them) to prevent people of seeing inside.  In addition, you can have the MyQ App with select Garage Door Openers, that allows you to monitor your garage door, and open/close it from anywhere in the world!  It’s an amazing new technology and would benefit you and your family greatly.

Lastly it is important to get your garage door and opener inspected, at least, once per year to maintain safety and security!  By having your door inspected annually, it can decrease the amount you could spend on an emergency in the future, and gives you peace of mind!

Insulated garage doors make sense!

Non-insulated garage doors allow a garage to become very cold in winter, and if the garage is attached to the house it fails to serve as an efficient buffer against cold temperatures. Also, cold can be hard on a car battery, and entering a cold car in winter is miserable.  Insulated Garage Doors can make your life warmer, cooler, and quieter. It lowers energy bills, acts as a barrier between you and street noise, and brightens an otherwise dreary space. Lower Your Energy Bill: If your garage is attached to your house like most are, insulating it can mean immediate savings on energy costs. Without proper insulation your garage will become a drain on your house, either sapping warmth when it’s cold out or making it harder to keep things cool in the summer time. 6 Common Garage Door Problems to repair before the snow flies!

When cold weather sets in, it can take its toll on the performance of your garage door.  When it comes to garage doors, there are numerous problems that can occur during the lifespan of your door, especially in the colder months.  Some of these problems can be extremely dangerous and is best to call a garage door professional.

Here is what we recommend!

If your garage door is loud or making noises, lubricate the rollers, hinges, and bearings. (do not lubricate the actual garage door track) Make sure they don’t show abnormal wear, rusting, and are free from debris, etc. Keeping the moving parts of your garage door properly lubricated is essential in preventing problems and abnormal wear.  

Garage door issues related to the photo eyes or safety sensors can develop for several reasons and are usually easy to fix.  They should be about 6” from the floor and both should have a solid LED light to indicate they are aligned properly. If not, you can move or adjust the sensors until they are aligned and the light is solid.  While you check your safety sensors we also recommend doing a safety reversal test by placing a towel or a 2x4 board on the ground where the door closes and push close.  The door should automatically reverse. 

Cables serve as a control mechanism for the springs. Look for any fraying or abnormal wear with cables.  If your garage door has extension springs, our garage door professionals will make sure the safety cables are properly installed.  These safety cables are important because they prevent an extension spring from flying off and causing potential injury or damage if it breaks.  

Weather stripping is vital and important for us living in Minnesota, as it prevents the warm air from escaping outside and keeps the outdoor elements from coming in to your garage.  If you look around the outside edges of your garage door, you’ll probably see either weather strips of brush or vinyl that are in place. If you have an insulated or attached garage door, the weather strip works to enhance the overall performance of your door and can keep your heating bills lower.

Over time, the tracks on your garage door can become bent, warped, or misaligned.  This can cause the opening and closing of your door to become difficult or impossible.  To prevent this, keep the track clean and free of any debris.  

Probably the most dangerous and most common problem is a broken spring.  Finely tuned and maintained springs are something that garage doors need to run smoothly and efficiently.  But over time, and in harsh MN winter conditions they can wear and break.  Never try to replace a broken spring by yourself, as they are under high pressure and could cause extreme damage or injury.  Give a garage door professional a call!

Garage Door’s and Theft

Garages are a common entry point for burglars and, when looking at security in a whole, an easy target for thieves.  Open garage doors serve to advertise your belongings to passerby’s, which increases the likelihood of theft. So homeowners should make sure their garage door remains closed anytime they aren't present. Take away the attractive appeal to what someone might want to steal.  Burglars also know how easy it is to get into a home by a roll up garage door. Internet reporting has made this information general knowledge.  Garage doors are not only a weakness, but can provide criminals a shelter once inside. To the casual passerby an open garage with a vehichle pulled up to it doesn’t look out of place or scream break-in.  Securing your garage door doesn’t just mean the garage door, you have to look at every entrance point as vulnerability.

First and foremost you should invest in a garage door opener that has Security options.  Most of our LiftMaster openers we sell and install have Security+2.0 which safeguards your household by sending a new code with each click of your remote, so the door opens only for you.   It also has timer-to-close, which remembers to close the garage door when you forget after a pre-programmed number of minutes.  Along with this, our openers have the option of MyQ Technology which allows you to open, close, and monitor your garage door from anywhere in the world . Other steps you can take to help keep your garage (and home) safe and secure. 1. Keep the door shut; this may seem obvious but many people leave the door open or forget to shut it. 2. Take the remote with you; garage door remotes are easily found in someone’s car, usually clipped to the visor or glove compartment.  You should remove the remote whenever not in your car or invest in a small keychain remote. 3. Unplug your opener; if you’re out of town for an extended period of time, it’s a smart move to unplug or lock it electronically, in a way that disables the remote 4.  Lost remote? Reset the code!   5. Frosted or tinted garage door windows; don’t do thieves any favors by letting them see inside your garage and taking a look at all your belongings. 7.  Keyless Entry System; If you have a keyless pad (to open your garage door from the outside), do not give the code out to others. 6. Make your service door & the door into your house are as safe as your front door!  Ensure you have strong, sturdy doors made out of a solid material and have sufficient locks.  Don’t forget to lock these doors at night or whenever you are not home! 7.  Tune-Ups; don’t neglect maintenance on all parts of your garage door and keep an eye out for any corrosion or unsafe moving parts.

Garage Door Safety

The garage door is typically the largest and heaviest moving object in your home.  Properly maintained and operated, the garage door and garage door opener, allow you, your family, and vehicles convenient access to and from your home.  They also provide security to your home, protect against the elements, and help save energy.  

While this is a very important and useful feature of your house, it is also just like a large ‘appliance’ and can cause serious injury or death if the correct safety precautions are not taken.  While there are some maintenance tasks that you can do by yourself on a regular basis, there are others that require a professional garage door technician.  

According to the CPSC (consumer product safety commission) there are an estimated 5,300 ER treated injuries from garage doors and/or garage door openers, and 13,000 medically treated injuries.  The most common are cuts, pinches, crushes usually caused by finger caught in section of the door, followed by a falling door, then wounds from glass or sharp edges from the hardware.  You wouldn’t think there would be so many injuries involving a garage door!  So to prevent some of these injuries, here are our best garage door safety tips!

Mount the garage door control button out of reach of small children (recommended at least 5 feet from the floor)

Don’t let children play with remotes or garage door control and explain how the garage door works and how to operate it safely

Never place fingers between door sections

Know how to use your garage door’s emergency release feature

Test your garage door opener’s reversing mechanism monthly and be sure your photo eyes are working, intact and approx. 6 in from the ground.

Visually inspect your garage door each month, looking at the springs, cables, rollers, hinges, and pulleys for signs of wear.  If any of these components look damaged or not running properly, give us a call and we’ll send a professional service technician to get things fixed up!

Never attempt to repair springs or cables.  These are under extremely high tension and can cause serious damage.  They require the correct knowledge and special tools for adjustment.

You can test your doors balance by using the release mechanism to manually open the door and it should lift smoothly with little resistance and should stay open approx. 4 ft. above the floor.  If it is difficult to perform this task, the door could be out of balance causing premature wear and tear.

If you’re on vacation or away for a long period of time, unplug the garage door opener for security purposes

Consider buying a MyQ Garage Door Opener with a gateway which can tell you when you garage door opens, closes, how long it has been opened, and even allows you to monitor and open/close on your iphone, computer, or tablet from anywhere in the world.

Keyless Entry Systems are also a great accessory for you garage door.  It is on the outside of your garage door usually on the trim and allows you to open the door (using a PIN), without the use of key or remote.

Never leave your door partially open.  Not only is it a security issue but when activated again, it may travel downward and come in contact with whatever is in its path

Always make sure your garage door is closed when you lock all your entry doors for the night!

Garage Door Repairs: DIY, what you should and should not try & why

Your garage door is likely to be the most overlooked ‘appliance’ in your home.  It’s a simple as pressing a single button to open and close.  Like every other ‘appliance’ in your home, your car, your fridge, oven, washer/dryer, and furnace, your garage door and opener should be maintained regularly and adjusted as needed. You can perform some easy maintenance tasks by yourself at home, other tasks such as; spring replacement, track/roller repair, and complete or partial door installation, should be left to your garage door professional.  You should also consider an annual maintenance inspection to ensure your door and opener continue working safely and properly.

Repairs you can handle:

 Changing remote batteries

This may seem very straightforward and effortless to some of you, but you may be surprised how many homeowners forget to check their remote batteries or don’t know how!  If your garage door all the sudden stops working and the remote control’s LED will not flash when the button is pressed, it is most likely dead.  See our blog here on remotes and how to change the batteries

Cleaning garage door tracks

If your garage door seems to be noisier than usual or shaky, the tracks could be dirty or obstructed.  To properly clean the tracks, just wipe the inside portion of them with a damp cloth.  Then lightly lubricate the hinges and rollers with a silicone based lubricant.  We recommend not lubricating the actual track as it can cause particle build-up and make the rolling worse.

Safety sensor test

If your garage door won’t close and goes back up or the opener lights flash, there is most likely a problem with the safety sensors (photo eyes).  First check the lights on each safety sensor, which are located on the tracks, approx. 6” from the ground on both sides of door.  The lights should be one solid color, not flickering or flashing (colors can be amber, green, or red).  If they are flickering, try adjusting each photo eye until they’re aligned and pointing directly at each other.  You can also try cleaning the photo eye lens.

Repairing or replacing the garage door opener

Most people have automatic garage doors these days, which also means you have an electric garage door opener.  There are several electrical and mechanical issues an opener could encounter.  To fix these, you would need the proper knowledge, training, and equipment to get the job done right.

Spring Replacement/Repair 

Just because you can learn how to do almost anything by searching online, doesn't mean replacing garage door springs should one of them!  These springs are under enormous amounts of pressure and tension while keeping the garage door in place.  If they were to snap or break, the recoil could cause serious damage or injury.  Since the springs hold up the door, they could even cause the door to crash down onto you, your cars, or other objects. 

Replacing a door section or new door

A garage door is the largest moving object in your home, and because of the large number of parts, installation of a garage door is highly technical.  Proper installation is critical to the performance of your door.  Professional garage door installers can typically install a door in a few hours and are careful to make sure safety requirements are met.  Installations by most homeowners typically span several days and can cause a lot of frustration. In addition, incorrect installation can void certain warranties, so we recommend a trained garage door installer to handle the job for you and we can usually haul your old door or section away!

Furthermore, when looking for a professional garage door installer, you can go online and it seems that everybody these days are doing garage doors: roofing companies, siding, electrical, plumbing, and even painting companies.  But since we specialize in garage doors and openers (and since it’s in our name :)), you know we have the training, knowledge, and experience unlike those other companies!  We've seen this on more than one occasion where there has been poor or incorrect workmanship done by someone previous.  Why pay for garage door work or repair twice, when you can get it done right the first time?

Learn how to program your Remote!

How to Program your Garage Door Remote Control

The first step is to decipher what type of LiftMaster remote you have; you can refer to your product manual, take a look at these pictures, or give Thompson Garage Door a call! If they look similar or have the same description as the two below, we’ll call them the LM Remotes during this article.

If they look similar or have the same description as the three below, we’ll call them the MAX Remotes for the remainder of this article.

Let’s start with the LM remotes: *  To Program using the Garage Door Opener, first locate the learn button on the back side of the opener. 1)  Press and immediately release this learn button.  It will glow steadily for 30 seconds 2)  Within those 30 seconds, press and hold the button you would like to use on the remote control. 3)  Release the button when the garage door opener lights blinks or two clicks are heard.   4)  Now try it out by pushing the button you just programmed, your garage door should open/close. *To Program using the door control (wall panel), locate the learn button on the door control to enter the programming mode.  (The command LED will flash once) 1) Press the LEARN button again, the LED will flash once. 2) Press and hold the button you would like to use on your remote 3) Release the button when the garage door opener lights blinks or two clicks are heard.  Now try it out!

Now let’s move on to the MAX Remotes: 1) First locate the LEARN button on your garage door opener.  (Note: it could be green, red/orange, purple, or yellow depending on the model of garage door opener.) 2) Now, locate the Program button on your remote.  (will be a small button you will use a safety pin or paper clip to press, either on the side or back of remote) 3) To enter programming mode, press the Program button on your remote control (with paperclip/safety pin) until the LED on the FRONT of remote turns on. 4) Press and release the Learn button on the garage door opener, the LEARN LED will light. 5) Within 30 seconds, press and release the remote control button you would like to use. Check to see if the garage door opener light blinks.  If not, wait for remote control LED to light solid then slowly press and release the remote control button again.  Repeat until the light bulb blinks.  DO NOT press the button after the light bulb blinks. 6) To exit programming mode, press any remote control button EXCEPT the button that was just programmed.   7) Now, try it out by pressing the programmed button on the remote!

Deactivating Codes: Press and hold the Learn button on the garage door opener or wall control until the LED goes out (approx. 6 seconds). All previous codes are now erased and you can reprogram each remote control you wish.  

Is your remote control battery dead?? The lithium battery should produce power for up to 5 years but if the battery is low, the remote control’s LED will not flash when the button is pressed.  Replace the battery with only 3V2032 coin cell batteries.  First pry open the case in the middle, then at each side with the visor clip.  If you have a MAX remote, pry open case with screw driver then remove the two screws and open case.  Insert batteries positive side up, replace cover, and you’re done!

Some of you may think if you've seen one garage door, you've seen them all. But in reality, garage doors come in several different styles, brands, and colors which change and update very year.  For many homes the garage door comprises up to 40% of the house.  That means that when you replace an ordinary or old door with a new one, your home becomes the stand-out in your neighborhood. With that being said, here are the top Garage Door Trends of 2015! 1. The Smart Garage Doors The days of having a garage door remote in each of your cars could be coming to an end. Instead, we have several different styles of MyQ Garage Door Openers.  This technology allows the garage door opener to connect to the internet allowing you to open, close, and monitor your garage door from your smartphone, tablet, or computer.  The style of such garage doors is nothing less than sleek and modern, not to mention it’s a major convenience.  Since you can now check and manage its operation from anywhere in the world, you never have to worry about giving out a garage key or code. New garage openers also come with battery backup, quiet belt drives, door monitors, and side-mount installations.
