âI donât remember telling anyone it was my birthdayâI mean, itâs not a big dealâand anyway my mom has to work, so we were going to celebrateâŠthis weekend.â Â
âIt appears youâve just revealed this information yourself. How are âweâ celebrating?â
âWe? ... uh ... I mean---thanks, Besty...I just wasnât planing on doing anything...itâs fine honest, I donât want to inconvinionse anyone.â

âYou are in a school run and attended by psychics so itâs pretty much impossible to keep anything quiet.â  Tabitha fished around in her bag and pulled out a small, wrapped box.  âGotcha this⊠so what are the celebration plans for the weekend?â She asked, keen to keep the focus on something other than the fact she had done something nice.
"Okay, good point, still it's weird that everybody knows" Her eyes widened at the sight of the box, she took the box from the blond. Laurie grinned up at Tabitha when she opened the box. "Wow, thank you, you want to help me put it on?" Her cheeks colored a little and she tried to cover it with a shrug. "um, just hanging out with my mom we go to the movies, splurge on all the stuff there, maybe go out to eat, or shopping. Nothing that crazy we've been doing the same kind of thing since I was twelve." Â

Esme rolled her eyes. âLucky sod.â
âIt is a high school full of telepaths, alleged precognitive types, and the like. Rumors circulate, in short.â
âWhat my sister is indelicately saying is that sometimes people know things they shouldnât, but it happens to everyone so you neednât worry about becoming a particular target,â Sophie sighed, shooting Celeste a look.
âI think a few people on campus were just hoping someone would throw a birthday party properly before the end of the year,â Irma piped up. âBeing as we canât exactly hope for a house party.â
"A...a birthday party?" Laurie stammered. "I've neverâŠum really had a big one. We moved a lot so, my birthday was usually me and my mom...she made a cake and gifts. I guess there could be cake for everybody...but well I wouldn't know where to start if anyone wants a big party, like you see in the movies." Â

Laurie shrugged, she wasn't expecting an answer to her rhetorical question. Laura was different than most of the students at the school. Laurie had heard rumors about X-23, but she tried not to pay attention to them, she always felt she knew a person better after meeting them because she could read them herself.
Right now, Laura was tense. Her emotions deep and covered by a fog of neutral gray. Laurie hadn't seen that often but it always worried her. She wasn't at all surprised to find a deep blue sadness under the fog when she probed deeper. She was barely aware she was doing it, but Laurie's least favorite color was blue, she liked yellow much better. Little spots of yellow appeared in Laura's aura.
Then Laura asked about her powers and Laurie pulled away like she was a child who had been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Her cheeks colored, "I...uh...I can see people's emotions...and control them if I want to...uh sorryâŠ."
[Laurieâs birthday gift from Tabitha]
âI donât remember telling anyone it was my birthday--I mean, itâs not a big deal--and anyway my mom has to work, so we were going to celebrate...this weekend.â Â

Laura shrugged. That was exactly what she expected, but Laurieâs tone implied that was ridiculous. âI did not know we were friends.â She scooted a little closer to make the most of the space under the umbrella. âI donât like eating in there,â she said. âWhy are you out here?âÂ
Laurieâs smile grew and she chuckled, âI mean sure, we havenât made friendship bracelets or anything, but why wouldnât we be friends? We are the only ones cool enough...or crazy enough to be out here, so that has to mean something, right?â Laurie shrugged, âSame as you...and my mutation makes bing in croweded places like that difficult. Out here thereâs only...well you, so Iâm okay.â Â Â

âI still havenât decided what to wear to the ball...should I be worried?â

Laura frowned as the wind and rain increased, and debated whether she would rather go inside or endure the rain. Before she could decide, Laurie had come over with the umbrella. She looked at the other girl with a confused expression, unaccustomed to anyone caring about her comfort. It made her suspicious, but being kind wasnât a crime. âThank you,â Laura said. âYou did not have to do that.â
"What, you expected me to sit there, all dry, while you got drenched? What kind of friend would I be if I did that?" Laurie laughed, smiling at the other girl. Her umbrella was big enough to keep most of the rain off Laura even if Laurie's arm was getting a little wet in the process. "So, why are you out here in the rain? It's nice to know I'm not the only one."

After a second of staring, Laura waved awkwardly in response. She looked at the seat Laurie gestured to, damp from the rain, and shook her head. She was content where she was, dry in the shadow of the building, so long as the rain remained light and the wind did not shift. Laura switched the earbud from one ear to the other and pressed âskipâ for a new song while she continued eating.
Laurie's smile drooped when Laura didn't come join her at the table. She shrugged it off and went on eating her tuna fish sandwich. The rain started to hit her umbrella harder and faster, and the cold wind tugged on her umbrella wanting to play with it like a kite. Laurie looked over at Laura, it looked like the other girl was getting wet.
Grabbing her half finished sandwich, and the rest of her lunch Laurie ran over to Laura. She shifted her umbrella to keep them both dry as the downpour began. Â Â

snikt-23:
Laura had chosen a spot outside, close enough to the building to be protected from most of the light rain, to eat her meal. The dining hall always seemed too crowded and noisy with the sounds of her classmates chewing and talking. She overheard classmates mentioning her absence of table manners with disgust on more than one occasion, and decided to spare them both the annoyance by eating separately from then onâafter intentionally chewing with her mouth open exaggeratedly and using her hands instead of utensils for the rest of the meal. One of her ears had an earbud inside, connected to a battered 6th generation iPod Nano, while the other did not so she could still listen for danger in her surroundings. She could hear no threats, merely the girl with a similar name who she met in the library walking outside and finding a dry spot to sit nearby. Laura glanced upâthe closest she would come to a greetingâand then returned her gaze to the chicken sandwich on her plate and the raindrops bouncing off the ground.
Laurie took her tray and went outside, loud crowds in closed spaces often gave the young empath headaches. It hadn't always been that way, but now that her powers had mature the rainbow of colors she could see in the air, representing the emotions of others, had changed from stay ribbons of color to a flood, filling the room with their full array and made; it made her eyes ache. Going outside was an easy way to avoid the pain. It was raining, which meant she would have some peace and a break from the headaches she often gained in her classes.
She had her tray in one hand and a bright pink umbrella in the other keeping her dry from the light rain off her. Laurie didn't notice Laura sitting near the side of the building until she had turned around after finding a place to sit. Laurie waved at the other girl with a smile, gesturing to the picnic bench opposite her in case Laura wanted to join her. Â Â
firecrackertabitha :
Tabitha couldnât help chuckling.  âHave you ever tried explosive dodgeball?  You might find youâre better at that as thereâs more incentive.â  A huge grin spread across her features.  âJust your hair?  Deal.  Iâll go easy on you⊠but just at first.â  Tabitha winked playfully, âand Iâll kiss you better afterwards if youâre lucky.â
Laurieâs cheeks colored, âOkay, so maybe more than just my hair....I really sucked at dodgeball. Always seemed to get it in the head.â Laurie chuckled. âBut I guess if youâve got the first aid covered Iâll be fine, right.â Â
firecrackertabitha :
âI hope I continue to impress,â Tabitha teased with another playful wink. Â She couldnât stop a gentle giggle escaping her when Laurie missed the cue ball twice and she headed to the corner the ball had ended up in to fish it out of the pocket. Â âThat explains why I havenât seen you around at this time before, why the change?â Â She held the ball up between her thumb and finger. Â âMaybe we should start with the basics,â she suggested as she placed the ball back on the table. Â âMind if I give you a hand?â
Laurie shrugged, "My mom said it would be better for me to be here, where I can learn to control my powers...or have someone who understands them around 24/7. I think she needed a break...she wasn't exactly thrilled that I have powers." She grinned with a laugh, "The basics sound great. I think you better give me a hand otherwise this'll be a long game."
firecrackertabitha:
âI say bring it on⊠as long as you donât mind dodging small exploding balls,â she replied with a chuckle.  âRoommates have to put up with a lot of shit no matter what your powers are, giving them a break is probably a good idea.â
She laughed,âOkay, you make a fair point. I was never very good at dodgeball, but,  tell ya what your promise not to set my hair on fire Iâll make sure I donât make you cry like a baby in front of everyone, yeah?âÂ
âIf there are mutant hunters in town, I would rather not go with another student,â Laura commented. âNor with a staff member nearby.â Perhaps that would be âlooking for troubleâ, but it seemed to her that trouble was looking for themâshe just wanted to meet it halfway.
Laurie raised an eyebrow at Lauraâs comment, but she was getting used to this kind of talk from the other girl. "I think the idea is to not engage with these people. I mean think about it, bodies start showing up itâll only draw attention to us, right? Besides if they hunt mutants they are probably prepared for what we can do. And you go alone, get into trouble, Iâm going to have to do something crazy and try to save you.â  Â
