She raised a hand and rubbed at her eyes warily, trying to push passed the thoughts that drummed on around in her head, banging loud and clear, demanding the attention that she was refusing to give them. A few irritated grumbles fled under her breath mostly aimed at herself.
When the other spoke and then suddenly let out a whistle, Cat jolted from surprise, though she hid the shock from her features. Head canted as brown-green hues proceeded to narrow, uncertain what was happening at first. It took her a moment to realize.
“Bird calls?”
She eased up and a weak smile crossed her features.
“Tha’s pretty cool.”
Unsure what was going on, Rose chose to stay silent. She had learned that it was best to just let people alone when they seemed deep in thought - it was safer too. If you were not involved, it was better to just stay out of it or else problems would come your way. She had learned that the hard way.
A small smile spread when the older girl seemed to acknowledge her skills, even if they had been developed because of illegal reasons. Still it was a skill that she had learned and it seemed useful too. It was a good skill to have despite the common use for it.
“I’m even once got a bird to answer me.”
The small girl tried to impress the other despite not sure if the other would like how and why she had learned to make ‘bird calls’.
Eyes turned and stared blankly ahead, suddenly feeling sick. It felt like she was listening to herself. Echoes of when she had been in the Ring. Of when she had endured under Copper. Used to it. It’s necessary. It’s what I deserve. Punishment. I’m a failure, I’m a bad girl. Why else do you think your own family left you? Didn’t want you?
But as easy as it was for her to feel that she had deserved every last strike, she couldn’t bring herself to believe that anyone else did. That included Rose. So she turned back to her companion and shook her head, sighing rather heavily and biting hard into her bottom lip before speaking.
“Jus’ because you’re used t’it… doesn’t make it right.”
Curious eyes looked to the brunette as if trying to read the other’s mind. She was not sure why it seemed like Cat found it so bad. Eyes narrowed slightly when the other spoke again and Rose nodded slowly in return.
“It’s not right, no.....”
Her words echoed the other’s as she fell silent unsure what else to say. She did not want the other to pity her. It felt wrong especially when the other was the one to pity - being homeless and all. It was still better having a home and some food. Eyes lit up slightly as a small smile spread on her lips when she looked at the other again.
“You wanna know something I can do?”
The other did not really get anytime to answer before she let out a whistle copying a blackbird’s call.
She tailed along with the other. Rose was the only reason she didn’t stick around to kick that guy where it hurts. Although Cat certainly would have loved to, she figured she better just go with the other. If that guy was taken out, the family might not have much of an income anymore… The brunette wasn’t positive how their dysfunctional family worked.
Upon hearing the question, head tilted to look at her younger companion before releasing a heavy sigh. Bony fingers ran through her hair, snagging a few of her tangles and jerking them out.
“M’not much of a fan of abuse. I know how it can destroy a person. I don’t think tha’ should happen t’you. S’not right… Not t’anyone. ‘Specially not a kid.”
She knew first hand.
The other’s answer made Rose ponder for a moment. She knew that not everyone’s brother - half-brother - would be as bad as Aun and sometimes she wished that he would be more like everyone else she saw on the streets. But he was not and she had learned to survive with what she now had. Besides she could not leave her mother.
“It’s just how it is - and it’s not that bad...... I’m used to it.”
What she was not used to was the random act of kindness from stranger - and even a homeless thief. Unsure Rose just tried to shrug it off before continuing down the streets not really knowing where to go.
She felt Rose’s hand go about her arm and heard her words, but Cat gave the boy one last glare. She was not ready to leave quite that second.
“If I hear y’hurt her because of me, I will find you. An’ next time, tha’ knife will go in your throat. Y’hear me? You’re nothing but a coward.”
With that said, she finally allowed Rose to lead her off, keeping close to the other and sending back a glare to the boy one more time before shifting her attention to the mother.
It seemed that woman would be of little help.
If it was not because she had a tight grip in the brunette’s arm, Rose would have been flying down the stairs and out on the street. Still she hurried down the narrow staircase and continued down the street before stopping and finally let go of the other.
“Why did you do that?”
There was both fear and a slight hint of awe in her voice as she looked at the other. The other had stood up to Aun without getting hurt like she herself would have been by now, but she had always angered the older boy and now she was nothing but safe in the city. Still she could not help but think what the other just had done was quite brave.
I’M NOT
AS『 WEAK 』
AS YOU THINK
I AM
Every time I look in the mirror, he’s there. Scars. This was the time he did this or that, here is where he broke my fingers. When he comes into my dreams I think my heart will stop. That’s how he’ll kill me. I’ll die of fright.
(via crimeheiress)
Cat stared up at the boy. He was like a younger, more idiotic version of Copper… How could such people exist in the world? It was odd. Her lack of fear regarding to him. She held great fear towards her former abuser, but something about dealing with this guy didn’t… worry her.
Perhaps because she was more worried about Rose.
Upon hearing his words, the brunette just sneered up at Aun. She moved in front of the little girl protectively.
”Y’should be the one t’get out. No one with your attitude deserves a nice place t’sleep a’night. You’re worth even less than dirt.”
Upon hearing the older girl’s words, Rose furrowed her brows slightly and took a step closer again feeling protected by the other.
“We’ll leave now....”
Her words were quiet and she took a grip in the other’s arm wanting her to follow and hope that Cat would just follow. It did not seem like Aun would continue to stay this nice and calm for much longer. Looking back at her mother, she tried to meet the woman’s eyes but failed as the other looked away.
“I’ll be back before it get’s dark.”
The girl’s answer didn’t faze Charlie. She wasn’t expecting the kid to be expert far from it. But if was going to treat the girl she wanted it to be her favorite food.
“What’s your poison? When I was a minor, I was addicted to anything deep-fried in grease. The more calories, the better. ’secially fries.”
"Poison?" The small girl furrowed her brows at the other's question. The woman wanted to poison her? "I like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches." she answered suspiciously and looked up at the woman.
Chewing on the inside of her chin, she pondered over the other's words and nodded slowly. "I like fries too." she said slowly although she had not gotten many in her life.
As soon as his grip released him, Cat pulled the knife away, a dark gaze still watching him with caution. There was not an ounce within her that didn’t think he might try something so she knew to keep her eye on him, though she took a couple steps away. Lips curved up in a dry smirk before turning to look at Rose.
”Y’okay?”
The knife remained grasped in bony fingers and her body tense in case she would need to defend herself again. She wasn’t scared of the boy, but she wasn’t about to let herself get off guard just because she was confident about being able to handle him.
Still surprised to see that Cat had a knife and even dared to defy Aun like that, Rose nodded slowly although her eyes glanced back at the boy in the room fear still visible in her eyes.
"Get out."
The older boy sneered at the brunette in front of him but did not try and throw her out himself.
"Take you dear friend and get out."
He turned to small girl who flinched slightly at his words. A satisfied smile appeared on his lips - at least there was still someone who showed him the respect he deserved.
Now we have a disgruntled, frustrated teen male to deal with.
“Look— Trust me: you’d know if you were a ghost. All of us have some degree of powers, and as far as I know, almost every ghost remembers how they died.”
"You have powers? Really?"
The small girl crossed her arms over her chest as she had decided not to trust this liar.
"You're not a ghost. I can see you. You've never been dead."
Charlie stared at the child through narrowed eyes, trying to determine if she was telling the truth; but there was no lie in her face. The kid was hungry, alright; it showed in her gaunt expression, in her shoulder blades that stuck out like bird’s wings. The redhead’s lips quirked into a smile, and she spun on the spot, searching the busy streets.
”Is there anywhere you fancy going?” she asked cheerfully, determined to treat the kid to a decent meal. “I think there’s a Mexican restaurant a couple blocks over. You like spicy food, kid?”
As the woman stared at her, Rose just stared back. She was used to people looking at her like she was some sort of filthy homeless girl. She was not. At least not homeless.
Holding the gaze until the woman smiled, Rose looked around herself as she thought about the question. "I'm not sure? I don't think I've ever had spicy food." she mumbled slightly embarrassed of her lack of knowledge.
Feeling Rose let her go, Cat allowed a smirk to cross along her face. She stared up at the guy as he yelled at her, but she wasn’t at all concerned. He probably couldn’t do much worse than Copper had ever done to her. The thief knew she cold handle him. Not to mention she had the advantage of surprise. No one ever expected that a small girl like her knew how to do anything.
Free hand now slipped up under her jacket to where she could feel the hilt of one of her throwing knives. Fingers carefully wrapped around one and prepared herself. “Nah… I don’t feel like leaving.” Raising a foot, she kicked at the back of Aun’s knees with the hopes of causing him to take a fall. Her other knee then came up, hoping to give him a strike either in the stomach or where it hurts depending on if he came down. During all this, the knife was pull out, the silver of it glinting in the pale light of the room before it was pressed up against her opponent. ”Let me go. Now.”
Silently the small girl watched as the homeless girl kicked Aun. A small gasp escaped the girl and she feared what Aun would do next. Her eyes caught a small flicker of light and she blinked a few times as she saw the knife in the brunette's hand.
The older boy looked surprised at the small girl in front of him and gasped for air. What had just happened? How could someone that small suddenly fight against him like that? Still he was terrified by the knife pressed against him, but he tried his best not to show. "Okay. You win." It was only a snarl, but he let go of the brunette before narrowing his eyes at her. He was not going to forget this. He would get his revenge.
“Ghosts make it an effort to not be seen,”
“Naturally, most ghosts are visible.”
"How can most ghost be visible?"
"Does that mean that some people might be ghosts without anyone knowing it, because they are visible? You're full of lies."
Charlie sighed. She’d lived on the streets long enough to see a little bit of herself in this girl, and was heavy with nostalgia and sadness.
“What do you need it for?” she asked, wondering if she could help - even the smallest thing, like a meal or a warm jumper. “You hungry, kid?”
"For my mother...." The small girl was quick to answer. She had learnt that this answer often would earn her some pity from strangers, she just wished it was not the truth either.
"I need it for my mother..." She repeated slowly before looking up when the other asked her a question. Eyes wide she nodded slowly trying not to show how hungry she really was. Still her words seemed to betray her when she answered. "Very."
When the woman set the slice of apple before her, Cat gave a sigh. If it would have been worth it to have tried and given it back, she would have done so. But it was apparent that the lady wasn’t going to take no for an answer.
At the sound of the boy, Cat just glanced over with a raised eyebrow, watching, uncertain of how to react quite yet. He certainly wasn’t the nicest and, when he suddenly grabbed her, she immediately let her bony fingers pull her knife out some, only to stop when Rose took hold of that arm. A quick glance at the young girl. “Let me go, I can handle him.” Then gaze went cold, focusing on Aun with a sudden intensity. Sneer crossed her face as she stood there in his grip, uncaring. “Release me, dickwad.” Son-of-a-bitch was the first insult that came to mind, but the small brunette remembered at the last second that his mom was present. Or, at least, she assumed he was a son.
Still with a tight grip around the other's arm Rose looked up at her half-brother begging him to just leave the brunette alone. It was not her fault that she was here - not really. Eyes wide when the other told her to let her go Rose did as she was told before stepping back afraid what might happen now. Her eyes widened even more when she heard Cat's words and she wanted to warn the other. There was no way she could stand a chance against Aun?
"What did you just say?" The male narrowed his eyes at the small brunette. She did not look dangerous at all. She was just a filthy homeless like all the others on the street. "I want you out of my home! Now!" He glared at the brunette starting to drag her towards the house. "Both of you!" He cast a glance over his shoulder at the small girl.
Cat wasn’t too sure she wanted to sit down, but after some standing there and doing nothing she figured it wouldn’t hurt. A slow walk to the table before sitting down with a frown on her face. At the little girl’s question, she stared at the door.
If the person hurting the girl and her mom was to come walking in, then Cat decided she wouldn’t hesitate to do something. She didn’t want to kill… but she would. And so bony fingers reached to the knives strapped to her back just in case.
The silence around the small table only grew as no one said anything. Her mother carefully sliced the apple and gave both her and their guest a slice ignoring Rose's look. Still she gratefully put the small slice in her mouth and ate it while glancing at the door.
"What do you think you're doing?!" The loud voice startled her as Rose had allowed herself to relax for a second and in that moment Aun had decided to come home. Afraid she looked up and then at Cat. The homeless girl should not be here either. "And who is she?" The tall muscular male looked down at the small brunette in his apartment before taking a grip around her arm and tried to yank her up. Immediately Rose got up and grabbed the brunette around her other arm. "Let her go, Aun." She begged the older boy.
