I love you people going into "useless" fields I love you classics majors I love you cultural studies majors I love you comparative literature majors I love you film studies majors I love you near eastern religions majors I love you Greek, Latin, and Hebrew majors I love you ethnic studies I love you people going into any and all small field that isn't considered lucrative in our rotting capitalist society please never stop keeping the sacred flame of knowledge for the sake of knowledge and understanding humanity and not merely for the sake of money alive
From one burnt out student to another
This semester has been an absolute nightmare for me, so welcome to the resulting post where I try to help other people who are in the same boat!
How about we run through a quick list together, okay?
Unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders, relax your face, unclench your fists
Are you sitting in the shape of a C right now? *hitting you with a broom* straighten your back out!!
Maybe get up and stretch while you're at it!
Have you taken your meds today? If not, go get 'em.
Have you eaten enough today? Coffee/energy drinks are not a meal!!
What have you eaten today? Do you need to get something to snack on?
Have you had any water today?
Do you need to rest? There is NO shame in taking a nap or relaxing. If someone does shame you, send them my way
How long has it been since you moved from where you are right now? Maybe move to another room if you can.
How long has it been since you looked away from your screen? Take a little 5-10 minute break to rest your eyes :)
How long has it been since you've showered? (No shame in this one either, it's okay if you can't do it. You're not judged here.)
Do you need to get into some fresh, comfy clothes?
If the weather in your area will allow it, can you open a window or go sit outside?
Affirmations:
My grades do not define me
I am more than a grade/a gpa
I am allowed to make mistakes
I am allowed to rest
Taking breaks is necessary for my well being
This semester/school year will not last forever
It's okay to take time for myself
I do not need to be productive all the time
I am capable
I am smart
I do not need to perform to perfection all the time
My mental/physical/spiritual/emotional health is more important than school
It is okay to ask for help
Asking for help does not make me weak or less capable
Assignments should not be valued over sleep/food/self care
If you have the energy, maybe try some of these:
Reach out to a friend/family member/mutual
Change your sheets
Take your trash out
Pick stuff up off the floor if there is anything
Do your dishes/run the dishwasher
Do a load of laundry/put any clothes away
Journal
Schedule any needed doctor's/dentist's/therapy appointments
Leave your home for a little bit
Go do something you enjoy
Create something
Go for a walk
Cook your favorite meal
You are doing amazing, and I'm so proud of you. You can and will get through this. You're not alone <3
As always, please feel free to reach out or send me an ask if you need someone to talk to!
There's a bunch of adhd advice out there that's like "people with adhd tend to work better under deadlines due to the anxiety so here are ways to artificially induce a stress response in order to get you to get work done" and it's like well what if I don't want to be stressed out all the time in order to function
Here's what I do that helps me get stuff done on time without stressing myself sick:
Split tasks up into their bare, basic components. Then, make a checklist of each component. Planners are my best friends, because I have an easier time remembering to do something if I write it down.
I find it a lot easier for me, motivation wise, to get through an essay by writing :
"do research/ find sources,
find quotations and create citations,
create an outline,
write paragraph (1,2,3, etc.),
edit rough draft,
create final draft"
because I can check off each little part and still feel like I'm making real, tangible progress vs. just putting down "turn in essay by (deadline)" in my planner.
Then, figure out what's the absolute *bare minimum* you need to do each day (or any other incriment of time that fits your schedule) to meet your deadline. Whatever it is, make sure to add an extra day or two as padding, so you can meet that deadline even if something comes up. Don't be afraid of asking for extensions or setting up accomodations. Be realistic with your limitations and time constraints.
For example: I have 5 hours of lecture I need to get through over Thanksgiving break to meet a deadline. Over 6 days, I need to watch at least 45 mins of a lecture each day. For me, 45 of lecture time is doable over a day because I know I dont have to do it all in one sitting. Realistically, I know it will take me anywhere from 1-5 hours to watch and take notes for these 45 minutes of lecture, because I am preemptively assuming I will need to take some breaks in between.
Breaks: when I get bored, I dont fight it. Instead, I take time to pivot. This is particularly helpful when I find myself doing something I have no interest in, and my brain does not for any reason want to let me do it. I take the time to scroll aimlessly, but also to get a drink/eat/use the restroom. I'm actually writing this while on a hw break right now. And when I get back from my break, all my stuff is in the same place where I left it at my desk, so I have a much better time easing my way into being productive again. If I still don't wanna work on what I was before, I start working on something relatively quick & easy from my to do list that I *do* want to do and ride the wave of productivity I get from finishing that.
The last part: reward yourself for the small victories. Yes checking things off a to do list is fun, but so are stickers. My planners are FULL of gold stars, smiley faces, and cute character stickers. There's a reason teachers use them, they are amazing motivators.
wow i... really like this. it makes so much sense to me, just clicks in my brain. like i've heard the different components of this ("break it down into chunks" and "overestimate the time") but this just makes it sound so kind and supportive?? and exactly what i need. thanks <3

what’s on my iPad?🎧
I have a more or less to-do free afternoon so I thought why not share what’s on my iPad? I use it at home for studying, in class I take my notes on paper :)
Religion exam was…something? Was done with all tasks after 15 minutes (wrote 2 pages) and then left. Considering I didn’t plan on going to the exam at all and had been on the verge of a panic attack the whole morning I’d say this is a win. At least a small one :’)
Almost lost my mind because I thought the document for my term paper got deleted but I fixed the problem! Managed to write a short chapter as well and now I’ll hopefully continue my book.📚
Hi everyone! It’s D here. I’ve been wanting to bring back this blog for a while. I used to go by studybrl-like-hermione but I just wasn’t comfortable with the user name anymore (also it was mispelled bc the right one was in use). So, I’ve decided to do some rebranding!
If you are interested in:
♡ studying tips and motivation
♡ literature and poetry
♡ philosophy (got to read some Latour, Heidegger and Lefebvre for my grad thesis and I would love to get more into this world)
♡ self improvement (say productivity, mindfulness, finding a sense of direction, radical acceptance and self care)
♡ and architecture theory
then you might want to follow me! I’m hoping to share more things on this blog: share my journey in the academic world, review some books or movies, leave some tips or just connect with people 💕
Also a few things about me:
♡ No bigotry allowed! No transphobia, racism, misogyny and all of the etceteras
♡ I’m still deciding how deep I will get into politics on this blog (it’s only a studyblr after all) but I want to make very clear I am pro palestine 🇵🇸 and anti trump
That’s all for now! Thank you for reading me!!
Hi everyone
I just thought I would share this resources because it is mind blowing.
This girl has ADHD and talked about how she has always struggled with time blocking and keeping a calendar. She created a new method that works better for her.
Instead of having different coloured colours calendar for different areas of your life and then struggling to know what to do with events that belong to multiple areas. It works by having different colours for each calendar that helps you prioritise tasks. I myself have a hard time deciding what's important.
I have outlined my modified calendars that make sense for me but check out the video for hers.
Appointments
This calendar is for time sensitive things that have be done and/or would have a negative impact on others if you don't follow through. These can't be moved or would be really difficult to move.
Examples: actual appointments, work shifts, classes, scheduled group rehearsals/trainings, someone's birthday dinner/party
Bottlenecks
This calendar is for things that don't need to be done AT a specific time but do need to be done BY a specific time. This means they can be moved around whenever before the deadline but need to be done before the deadline otherwise they create a bottleneck in your schedule and lead to you getting overwhelmed.
Example: homework, taking the bins out, paying bills, filming youtube videos
Critical (yellow)
This calendar is for things that you deem critical to your goals and growth. These can be moved around if needed but are things you want to try your best to get done each day.
Examples: workouts, reading 10 pages of a book, doing a full skincare routine
Daily Routine
This calendar is for parts of your day that happen regularly. These can be moved around where needed.
Examples: habits, chores, meals, travel time
Extra Fancy
This calendar is for extra fancy stuff that your ideal self would like to get done. These are nice to do or want to do but nothing bad will happen if you don't do them.
Examples: doing a facemask, watching a movie, doing some arts and crafts
Favourable Rememberables
This calendar is for things that you need to remember in the future.
Examples: birthdays, days off, due dates (I recommend creating separate events for submitting assessments or paying the bill and put them as appointments which are your top priority)
I hope this can be useful to someone because I think it will have a big difference for me. 💗
*puts on my ELA teacher hat.*
Argumentative/Persuasive texts have 3 primary pieces. All three pieces should be present for a solid argument to form.
1. An overall argument/thesis. This is the big point, the thing the author thinks should change in some way, the thing the audience should be convinced of.
2. Supporting claims/reasoning. WHY the author believes their argument.
3. Evidence that supports the claims.
You need all 3.
Argument: Ball pythons are better pets than dogs.
Claim: they are safer than dogs.
Evidence: Dogs kill an average of 40 Americans a year. Ball pythons kill 0.
Or -
Argument: people should eat less beef.
Claim: beef is the single worst protein source to produce in terms of environmental impact.
Evidence: For every gram of beef produced, 221 grams of carbon dioxide is emitted, compared to 36 for pork. That number is even lower for chicken, fish, tofu, and nuts.
Now a super nuanced argument will also include counter claims and preemptive rebuttals and rhetorical questions and all sorts of fun stuff. But at its heart, these three aspects are the actual bones of an argument.
And I cannot tell you how often I see people- internet discourse, TV personalities, politicians, do a GREAT job at Argument and Claims, and then just... not include any evidence.
But the evidence is the *important* part. The evidence is what *matters.*
As both producers and consumers of argument, as people who have to go through the world both persuading others and being persuaded (or not)- we should not be making and evaluating arguments based on claims alone without evidence.
I obviously care a lot about media literacy, but if you go out and never read another novel again, or spend your life thinking that the curtains are just blue in every movie you watch, whatever.
But you *need* to be able to analyze snd evaluate persuasive texts. Political speeches and advertisements- who to vote for, what to buy, which job to take, which union to join- you will make these life altering decisions based on how well you evaluate the arguments of the people who will benefit from your choice.
Demand evidence. Even if you AGREE with the argument being made, the evidence matters!
Thank you.
Why you can’t just do it, and what to do instead
Just putting this here where I won’t lose it…
1. Recognise that internal resistance is on your side. Part of what is so awful about the cycle-of-not-doing-the-thing is that it feels so self-destructive. But internal resistance does not want to destroy us; it literally wants the opposite! It only exists to protect us from pain.
You are not being self-destructive. You just have two deeply rooted and fundamentally contradictory ideas about what is best for you: doing the thing, and not doing the thing. 2. Get curious about this pain that your brain is so worried about. When we understand exactly what pain we fear and why, we can work on reducing those fears. This is why I think treating resistance as an opaque external force is such a mistake. Internal resistance is not immovable — it responds to reason, to alternative scenarios, to making space for the emotions that seem like such a threat — but to shift it you have to understand its particular content for you. 3. Negotiate. You may not be able to figure out what is motivating your internal resistance immediately, and even once you do, it can take some time to figure out how to address your fears and worries about pain in the offing. In the meantime, I suggest haggling. Will your internal resistance allow you to work for 10 minutes? What about five? If you can’t work formally, could you talk into your phone? How about brainstorming in the bathtub?
You can create so much increased space in your brain just moving from “I need to apply will power so I stop being so bad and lazy” to “I’m experiencing a lot of internal resistance, let me get inventive in working with it today”.
4. Recognise that you are not alone in this. Even if resistance is not a superhuman force, I think Pressfield is right to envision it as something that besets most of us. Yes, there are rare people who do not — or at least don’t seem to — experience much internal resistance, who seem to just produce and produce. But I am willing to bet that you also seem like that kind of person to someone in your life.
You are not being self-destructive. You just have two deeply rooted and fundamentally contradictory ideas about what is best for you: doing the thing, and not doing the thing.

ahh so exhausted and its only the third week of uni
(ó﹏ò。) this was from last year when everything was obviously much brighter
anyone heading back to school in the US to live on a college campus for the fall semester should uhhhhhhhhhhhh pack light and have a plan to get the hell out of dodge at a moment’s notice
this sounds jokey but i’m dead serious. if you plan on living on a college campus this fall please know that there is no amount of cleaning or “distancing” will keep COVID out of the school. these schools know that they are risking your life and the lives of their faculty by bringing people back on campus but they want your money more than they care if you live.
think about how unventilated dorm rooms are. think about how you somehow have a cold for 4 months straight at school. think about how fast the flu moves through a dorm. think about how foolish people act at when they’re drunk with friends. all it takes is one get together where 5 people remove their masks to play kings cup and the whole school is fucked.
you need a plan now. you need to pack light so you can leave quickly if necessary. you need to work out now how you will get home in the event that you need to be off campus immediately. if by some miracle you’re still there by october you can cross that bridge when you come to it. but you need to make a plan now.
not only that but so many colleges are in very small cities/towns and their hospitals would not be able to handle a huge outbreak at a university, it would decimate these places. so please please if you can just dont come back. its not worth it. take classes online or just take a gap year. like im hoping most people are already doing this if they can but idk it doesn’t hurt to say it again. there’s still time to change your schedule and change your plans. dont come back.
