That was a great question, and all the same the worst. It was probably the hardest question anyone has ever had to answer in the history of everything, Well, Percy didn’t really care if that sounded exaggerated, it was true.
He wasn’t ready for Camp Half Blood and learning that he was a Demi God at the age of 12. He wasn’t ready to have his life shattered and pieced back together into a mosaic that somehow made sense once you’ve stepped back and saw its beauty. He wasn’t ready for the danger, adventure, loss, love, and basic ironic punchline that has been his life for the past 9 years. The golden fleece, the sky literally at his fingertips, the life threatening maze, and the war that took his kids away. His campers, his friends- his innocence, his childhood. No, he wasn’t ready for that at all.
But it had happened, whether he consented or not, and in the end it didn’t turn out so bad. He had Annabeth and Grover, he had his two best friends in the world.
I guess it wasn’t much of a surprise that he lost it all in the span of a few months. Then it was his lost memories, new allys and friends, and brand new view of the world- just when he was starting to see it clearly. New Gods and Goddesses, new stories and myths. And then there was Annabeth, finding her way back to him just in time. It was stressful, but with her he could accomplish anything. He could fight a thousand more Titan wars with his best friends by his side.
Then there was Tartarus, and he had almost been lost. Not necessarily in death, but him himself. He had grown up in chaos, in passion and anger. He was born in war. Percy had Gabe, the gods, Luke, Kronos, and now Gaea. With so much rage, Percy almost disappeared for good, a truly tragic hero he could have become. If it wasn’t for Annabeth.
Always there, even when he couldn’t remember his life, his mom, his friends- she was there, her name floating among the fog like an anchor he could hold onto. Teaching him love, compassion, wisdom and strength. With sarcastic remarks and strong will, she was everything that tied him back to earth. That kept him from becoming another story among the gods.
So, I guess the answer was pretty clear.
“Good.” Grover grinned, looking back at the to the double doors that had started to open with grace as music started.
Percy watched in awe, his heart pumping in his ears and water from the foutains bubbling with excitement, as Annabeth approached with a wide smile, twinkling gray eyes, and dressed in white.
“Because here she comes.”
