NOAA Fisheries has published the First Edition Update 1 to the U.S. National Bycatch Report. This update provides a national compilation of bycatch estimates for living marine resources (fish, marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds, and invertebrates) of the United States at the fishery and species levels. While this update is based largely on 2010 data, the next update, planned for 2015, will include estimates based on data from 2011 to 2013.
This past Tuesday, the draft bill to reauthorize the Magnuson-Stevens Act was released by the U.S. House. The Magnuson-Stevens Act is a big deal because this is the law that lays out how fisheries...
By Lyf Gildersleeve Across America, countless people will sit down tonight to eat fish for dinner. Many Oregonians, including me, can provide for their families because of their jobs in the fishing industry—despite huge industry losses in the 1990s. In...
"This is a big day for Marine Harvest and the salmon farming industry," says Alf-Helge Aarskog, CEO of Marine Harvest. Together with Chairman Ole Eirik Lerøy he had the honor of ringing the opening bell at the NYSE today. Marine Harvest, the world's leading seafood company, is the first aquaculture company to be listed at the NYSE. The company controls about 22 per cent of the global production of farmed Atlantic salmon, the most industrialized and commercially developed aquaculture specie.
COMMENTARY ON RECENT ATTEMPTS AT ENHANCING FISH PRODUCTION IN THE COUNTRY Nutritionists and health experts recommend fish as an important source of protein in manâs diet, because it has little or no side effect...
Fish as the best source of diet nutrition? Yes, but with risks. If we label fish as that, we wager stocks since aquaculture cannot yet keep up with current demand.
Many communities confront the same economic instability their residents face. Cities and towns have declining tax bases because of high unemployment and foreclosure rates, while education and infrastructure costs soar.
It is not an abstract idea. We experience structural inequality — see it in the quality of local schools and their test scores, smell it in the access to healthy food or not, feel it in a sense of safety or danger as we walk the streets.
George Monbiot: A flawed policy alienates anglers and sport fishers â both more beneficial to the economy than the habitat destroying trawlers
Great article with right frame of mind. Pushing fisheries into the industrial sector will decrease number of jobs, put greater pressure on already threatened stocks, and reduce local accountability for environmental management.

This report by N. Hishamunda, et al, from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), summarises some of the issues facing aquaculture employment governance in a number of countries, current best practices and suggestions for improvements.
A Hout Bay forum claims legitimate fishermen are being labelled as poachers.
Fishermen protest in Cape Town in response to regulations. An example of when lack of diversification an alternatives leads to anger and distrust when fishing ability is restricted.
Next couple of posts will be devoted to the FAO and small-scale fisheries management. I've collected their series of videos on fisheries management from the UN perspective. Watch with introspection.
