Feeling inspired... Might put off writing and think about it the whole time
will byers would love the godzilla movies. all kaiju movies in general but godzilla in particular… so fun, so campy, so terrifying. the seemingly insurmountable being is always overcome by human ingenuity and eventually becomes an ally of sorts against other forces of evil. godzillaaaa
math nerd and music nerd (maybe one day i'll color this)
The Watermelon Woman (1996) dir. Cheryl Dunye

average take in the self-proclaimed feminist & anti-racist byler subfandom
The crux of understanding Supergirl is realizing that long before Ruthye ever says, "I don't want to be like you," Kara was already thinking that about herself.
That's the tragedy of the story. Ruthye saying it isn't the moment Kara starts doubting herself. But it is the moment she hears her own thoughts spoken back to her by someone else.
And what changes through the story isn't that Kara suddenly believes she's a symbol of hope. She doesn't magically gain certainty in purpose.
She realizes that whether she wants it or not, people are going to look up to her. Follow her.
So if that's true, then she has a responsibility to look like hope, to act like hope, to be something people can believe in, even if she doesn't believe it about herself. Even if she feels like she's failed. Even if she doesn't think she's worthy of carrying that symbol.
Because at that point it stops being about what she thinks of herself.
It's about protecting the hope that still exists in other people, especially the young, even if she's no longer sure it still exists in her own heart. She couldn't protect herself, she couldn't protect her home, she wasn't even allowed to die with her home. But she can protect others. So they can find a new home, even if she may never have one again.
Maybe she can become the reason someone else still believes tomorrow is worth waking up for.
Maybe that's enough.
