Doomtree freestyle - Sims and Cecil Otter Alone in Kyoto - Air [background music] (created by annikannikannika, via YouTube)
North Shore Sessions is an organization that takes musicians in Duluth, MN out to random locations and shoots them with a single camera as they perform. This session was Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak, and Sims of Doomtree freestyling a capella out in the cold. YouTube user annikannikannika took Sims's and Cecil's flows and added sick background music. See the raw NSS footage here.
"Sonnet 94"
They that have power to hurt and will do none That do not do the thing they most do show, Who, moving others, are themselves as stone, Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow; They rightly do inherit heaven’s graces And husband nature’s riches from expense; They are the lords and owners of their faces, Others but stewards of their excellence. The summer’s flower is to the summer sweet, Though to itself it only live and die, But if that flower with base infection meet, The basest weed outbraves his dignity: For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds; Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds. Sonnet 94 - William Shakespeare (1609)
Politicians in My Eyes - Death (1971)
Hunting For Witches - Joshua Petker (2008)
Overcome - Tricky (1995)
Devil Rides - Mogwai (2008)
West End Blues - Louis Armstrong (1955)
This is the first ever improv recording. Prior to this, every other arrangement was stock. This was the beginning of Satchmo's revolutionizing of jazz. (via philzsokay)
"The Day is Done"
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The day is done, and the darkness Falls from the wings of Night, As a feather is wafted downward From an eagle in his flight.
I see the lights of the village Gleam through the rain and the mist, And a feeling of sadness comes o'er me, That my soul cannot resist:
A feeling of sadness and longing, That is not akin to pain, And resembles sorrow only As the mist resembles the rain.
Come, read to me some poem, Some simple and heartfelt lay, That shall soothe this restless feeling, And banish the thoughts of day.
Not from the grand old masters, Not from the bards sublime, Whose distant footsteps echo Through the corridors of Time.
For, like strains of martial music, Their mighty thoughts suggest Life's endless toil and endeavor; And to-night I long for rest.
Read from some humbler poet, Whose songs gushed from his heart, As showers from the clouds of summer, Or tears from the eyelids start;
Who, through long days of labor, And nights devoid of ease, Still heard in his soul the music Of wonderful melodies.
Such songs have power to quiet The restless pulse of care, And come like the benediction That follows after prayer.
Then read from the treasured volume The poem of thy choice, And lend to the rhyme of the poet The beauty of thy voice.
And the night shall be filled with music And the cares that infest the day, Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs, And as silently steal away. The Day is Done - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1844) (submitted via claro-que-sea)
Somewhere - Sofia Coppola (2010)
From the writer/director of Lost in Translation (2006), Marie Antoinette (2003), and The Virgin Suicides (1999) comes a remarkable film about a man who has everything struggling with an existence of nothing, and the daughter who reminds him to feel. Incredibly minimal, slow fuse film, well worth the emotions it portrays. Winner of the 2010 Golden Lion award for best picture, the highest award given at the Venice Film Festival. Find it at a Redbox near you.
Honestly, Focus Features is one of the best production companies out there right now. Check this list of their movies for more great finds.
