part 1
december 30, 2026 .
you woke up expecting the phone to ring. it didn’t. at first, you didn’t think much of it. michael had said he’d call tomorrow. technically, tomorrow had only just started.
you’d only been awake for an hour. so you went about your morning. you ate breakfast. you got dressed. you checked your phone. you even laughed at yourself when you caught yourself looking toward the old telephone every few minutes.
it was completely ridiculous. he probably had a busy day. maybe he’d fallen asleep. maybe rehearsal had run late. maybe— you stopped yourself. he’ll call. he always did.
8:26 p.m .
nothing. you sat cross-legged on your bed, staring at the telephone. “come on…” nothing. you sighed. maybe he was busy.
you tried to convince yourself that you weren’t worried. you picked up your laptop and started watching something, forcing yourself to pay attention.
every few minutes, your eyes wandered back to the phone. still nothing.
11:52 p.m .
you were lying in bed now. the room was dark except for the small light coming from your bedside table. you glanced at the telephone.
“you said you’d call.” you laughed quietly at yourself.
“you’d better not be breaking your promises already.”
nothing. you turned over and closed your eyes. maybe tomorrow.
1:17 a.m .
it was almost impossible to sleep. again. you sat up and stared at the phone.
something about it felt wrong. you reached over and picked up the receiver.
“…michael?”
static. your heart jumped. “michael?” nothing. you held the receiver closer to your ear. usually there was something. a faint hum. static. his breathing. anything.
but this time—nothing. the line was completely dead. you slowly put the receiver back.
your stomach twisted. “no…” you stared at the phone. maybe it was broken. maybe whatever strange thing had connected the two of you had finally stopped. maybe— suddenly, the phone rang.
you nearly jumped out of your skin. you grabbed it immediately. “hello?!”
static. your heart was pounding.
“…michael?”
silence. then—“…hello?”
your breath caught. you knew that voice.
“michael?” a quiet laugh came through the receiver.
“yeah.” you closed your eyes.
“oh my god.” “i’ve been trying to call you all day.”
“what?” you sat down on the edge of your bed.
“the phone wouldn’t work.” you frowned.
“what do you mean it wouldn’t work?”
“i don’t know.” he sounded just as confused as you felt.
“every time i picked it up, there was nothing.” you swallowed.
“that’s exactly what happened to me.” silence. “…really?”
“yeah.” neither of you spoke for a moment. then michael laughed nervously. “maybe the phone doesn’t like us.” you smiled.
“maybe.” there was another pause. then you noticed something. the static sounded different. not louder. just…stranger. almost like there was something underneath it. a faint crackling. a distant noise.
you frowned. “michael?”
“yeah?”
“where are you?”
“in my room.” you sat up straighter.
“are you sure?”
“…yes?”
“because i can hear something.”
“what?” you listened carefully. music. very faintly. your eyebrows furrowed.
“there’s music playing.” michael went quiet. then you heard him move. “…wait.” “what?”
“i’m not playing any music.”
the sound became clearer. a melody. you couldn’t quite place it. then michael spoke again. “can you hear that?”
“yeah.”
“what is it?”
“i don’t know.” you listened. then suddenly—the music stopped. the line went silent. you waited.
“michael?” no answer. “michael?” static. then his voice returned. but something about it was different.
“…what time is it?” you glanced at your digital clock.
“1:24 a.m.” he was silent. “what?”
“what day?”
you frowned. “december thirtieth.”
another pause. “…it’s december twenty-ninth here.” your stomach dropped.
“what?”
“december twenty-ninth.” you looked at the calendar beside your bed. december 30, 2026. “no…”
“what?”
“michael, yesterday was the twenty-ninth.”
“i know.”
“no, i mean…” you swallowed.
“when we talked last night, it was december twenty-ninth for me too.”
“i know.”
“and now it’s the thirtieth.”
“yeah.”
“but for you…”
“it’s still the twenty-ninth.” neither of you spoke. you looked at the old telephone sitting in your lap. the same phone. the same impossible connection. except now, something had changed.
“…michael?”
“yeah?”
“do you think…” you hesitated.
“do you think the phone is changing time?” he didn’t answer immediately. then, quietly—
“i don’t know.” a pause. “but…”
“what?”
“i think we might be getting closer.”
your heart skipped.
“closer?”
“not like…” he laughed nervously.
“not physically.” you smiled despite yourself.
“i know what you meant.” another silence. then you heard him whisper, “wouldn’t that be something?”
you looked down at the telephone. “…yeah.” neither of you knew it yet, but the phone had stopped connecting december 29, 1982 to december 29, 2026.
it was starting to connect moments that shouldn’t have been able to meet. and tomorrow—neither of you would know what year you’d wake up in.
december 31, 2026 .
you woke up before your alarm. the first thing you did was look at the telephone. still there. still silent.
you reached for it. nothing. you sighed and dropped back against your pillows.
“okay…” you stared at the ceiling. “maybe tonight.” you’d spent the entire day thinking about what michael had said.
i think we might be getting closer. you couldn’t decide whether that was comforting or terrifying.
10:43 p.m .
the phone rang. you grabbed it before it could ring a second time.
“hello?” static.
then— “hi.” you smiled immediately.
“hi.”
“you sound happy to hear from me.”
“i’ve been waiting all day.” there was a small silence.
“…me too.” you smiled.
“so, what day is it?”
he laughed. “you’re checking?”
“obviously.”
“december thirtieth.”
you frowned. “…what?”
“december thirtieth.”
you looked at the calendar beside your bed. december 31. your stomach tightened.
“michael.”
“yeah?”
“it’s december thirty-first.”
silence. “what?”
“it’s december thirty-first here.” neither of you spoke. again. you could hear his breathing through the line.
“…that’s weird.”
“very.”
“maybe the phone’s just confused.”
“you think?” he laughed. you did too, but neither of you really found it funny. you talked for a while anyway, about nothing and everything. he told you about rehearsal. you told him about your day. you explained something you’d seen online that made absolutely no sense to him. he asked you to explain it three times.
eventually, you gave up. “never mind.”
“i’m trying.”
“i know.”
“i don’t understand how people in the future communicate.”
“you called me from 1982.”
“…fair.” you laughed. for a few minutes, everything felt normal again. like the phone hadn’t started bending time. like there weren’t forty-four years between you. then michael went quiet. “what?”
“nothing.”
“you’re thinking.”
“i am.”
“about?”
he hesitated. “…you.” your smile faded slightly.
“me?”
“yeah.”
“what about me?”
“i was just thinking about what you said.”
“what did i say?”
“you said you wished you could meet me.”
your chest tightened. “oh.”
“and i said i wished i could meet you.”
“yeah.” another pause.
“i wonder…”
“what?”
“if the phone can make us hear each other…” he stopped.
you waited. “…maybe it can do more.”
your heart began beating faster.
“what do you mean?”
“i don’t know.” his voice became quieter. “maybe we could see each other.”
you looked at the receiver. “michael…”
“i’m not saying it will work.”
“still.”
“i just want to try.”
you swallowed. “how?”
“i don’t know.”
you laughed softly. “that’s not very reassuring.”
“i’m sorry.”
“no, it’s okay.” you looked around your room. the old telephone. the tangled cord. the laptop sitting beside you. everything looked completely ordinary. and yet somehow, on the other end of that telephone, was a person living forty-four years before you. “okay.”
“okay?”
“let’s try.”
he laughed. “really?”
“really.”
“how?”
you thought for a moment. “i don’t know.”
he laughed again. “that’s not very reassuring.”
“shut up.” you both went quiet.
“okay,” michael whispered.
“okay.”
“put your hand on the phone.”
you hesitated, then placed your palm against the receiver. “done.”
“me too.” nothing happened. you waited. five seconds. ten. twenty. you almost laughed.
“this is stupid.”
“maybe.” you started to pull your hand away. then—crackle. you froze.
“michael?”
“did you hear that?”
“yeah.”
the static grew louder. not like before. this time it sounded almost like a radio searching for a station. your bedroom flickered. you sat completely still.
“michael…” “i can hear something.”
“what?”
“i don’t know.” then the static stopped. silence. you looked down at your hand. your palm was still pressed against the receiver. and for just a second, you could have sworn you felt another hand pressing back.
you pulled away. your heart was racing. “michael?” no answer. “michael?” static.
then, faintly—“…i saw you.” you stopped breathing.
“what?”
“i saw you.” your voice came out barely above a whisper.
“…what did you see?”
he was silent. then—“your room.” you looked around.
“how?”
“i don’t know.”
“michael, what did you see?”
a pause. “…you.”
your heart dropped.
“but i couldn’t see you.”
“i know.”
“why?”
“i don’t know.”
the line crackled again. then michael whispered, “i think you were standing in my room.”
you stared at the phone. neither of you spoke. because suddenly, this wasn’t just a telephone call anymore. somehow, for a few seconds, you had crossed the distance between 1982 and 2026.
“what do you mean?”
“i mean exactly what i said.” michael’s voice was quiet. “you were there.”
“but i’m not.”
“i know.”
you looked around your bedroom, almost expecting something to have changed. nothing had. your bed was still unmade, your laptop was still sitting beside you, and the old christmas lights were still tangled in the corner of your room. everything was exactly where it should be.
“what did i look like?” you asked.
there was a pause. “you were wearing a white shirt.” you looked down. your stomach dropped. you were wearing a white shirt.
“what else?”
“you were standing beside your bed.” you slowly turned toward the empty space beside you.
“michael…”
“yeah?”
“that’s where i’m standing right now.” silence.
you could hear him breathing. “i know.”
“how?”
“because i can still see you.” your heart stopped. “you can?”
“not properly.” he sounded confused. “it’s like… you’re there, but you’re not.”
“what does that mean?”
“i don’t know.” you moved your hand slowly through the air beside you.
“can you see me now?”
“yeah.”
“what am i doing?”
“you’re looking at your hand.”
you swallowed. he was right. “okay…”
you sat down on your bed. “what about now?”
“you’re sitting down.”
a nervous laugh escaped you. “this is creepy.”
“a little.” you could hear him laughing too. then his voice softened. “but you’re real.”
you smiled faintly. “so are you.”
“i know.” for a moment, neither of you said anything. then you heard him inhale sharply. “wait.”
“what?”
“come closer.”
“to what?”
“the phone.”
you frowned. “why?”
“just do it.” you leaned closer to the receiver. “okay.”
“closer.”
you rolled your eyes. “i’m practically inside the phone.”
he laughed. “i can see you better now.”
you smiled. “really?”
“yeah.” there was something different in his voice, softer, almost amazed. “you look different than i imagined.”
your heart skipped. “you imagined me?”
“of course i did.”
you didn’t know what to say to that. “what did you imagine?”
he laughed quietly. “i don’t know.”
“michael.”
“okay, okay.” he paused. “i imagined someone who looked… older.”
you laughed. “well, i am older than you.”
“not by much.”
“forty-four years.”
“don’t remind me.”
you both laughed. then the line crackled. your smile disappeared.
“michael?”
“i’m here.” the image of you began to fade.
“wait—” “i can’t see you anymore.”
the static grew louder. you gripped the receiver. “don’t hang up.”
“i won’t.”
“promise?” a pause.
“promise.” the static suddenly stopped, and for the first time since you’d met him, there was nothing between you. no voice, no breathing, no faint hum. just silence.
you held the receiver against your ear for another few seconds. then, very faintly—“i’m still here.”
you froze. “michael?” nothing. you waited. then you heard him again.
“i think…” his voice sounded distant. “…i think i can hear you from tomorrow.”
your eyebrows furrowed.
“what?”
“you just said something.”
“what did i say?”
“you said goodnight.” your stomach dropped.
“i haven’t said goodnight.” silence.
then michael whispered, “you will.”
you stared at the receiver, completely silent. “how do you know that?”
michael didn’t answer straight away. the line was quiet, almost peaceful now. “because i can hear it.”
“hear what?”
“you.”
your eyebrows furrowed.
“but i’m talking to you right now.”
“i know.” he laughed softly. “but i can hear you saying goodnight too.”
you looked around your room, suddenly feeling like you were being watched by your own future.
“michael, i haven’t said it yet.”
“i know.” his voice was almost a whisper. “but you will.”
you swallowed, your fingers tightening around the receiver. “what happens after i say it?”
there was a long pause. “i don’t know.”
you closed your eyes. somehow, that answer scared you more than anything else.
“maybe this is the end of the line.” michael was quiet.
“maybe.” neither of you wanted to say it. after everything—the late nights, the laughter, the stories, the forty-four years between you—it felt impossible that it could just stop.
“do you remember when we first spoke?” he asked.
you smiled sadly. “how could i forget?”
“you thought i was lying.”
“i thought you were some weird guy pretending to be michael jackson.” he laughed.
“and you told me you were rihanna.. whoever that is..”
“i was joking.”
“i know.” his laugh faded into silence.
“i’m glad you answered.”
your chest tightened. “me too.”
“even though i’m from 1982?”
“especially because you’re from 1982.” he laughed quietly.
“i wish i could’ve met you properly.” you looked down at the old telephone.
“maybe you did.”
“what do you mean?” “maybe this is what meeting was supposed to be.”
he didn’t respond for a while. “maybe.” the line crackled softly.
you knew what was coming before it happened.
somehow, you knew.
“michael?”
“yeah?”
“i think i should say it.”
“say what?” you smiled through the tears gathering in your eyes. “goodnight.”
he was silent for a moment. then, softly, “goodnight.”
you held the receiver against your ear. “i’ll never forget you.”
“i won’t forget you either.” you closed your eyes.
“goodnight, michael.”
“goodnight.” the line went quiet. you waited. nothing. no static. no breathing. no voice from 1982. just silence. slowly, you placed the receiver back on the telephone. you sat there for a while, staring at it, wondering if it would ring again. it didn’t.
eventually, you climbed into bed and pulled the blankets around yourself. the room felt strangely empty. you glanced at the calendar on your bedside table.
january 1, 2027. you smiled sadly.
maybe that really was the end. maybe the phone had only ever been meant to bring two people together for a little while, just long enough for them to find each other.
you reached over and switched off your lamp. then, just before you closed your eyes, you heard something. faint. so faint you almost convinced yourself you imagined it.
ring.
your eyes opened. you stared at the telephone in the darkness.
it didn’t ring again. you smiled.
maybe it was nothing. maybe it was everything. either way, you knew one thing for certain. some people spend their entire lives never finding the person they’re meant to meet. somehow, forty-four years apart, you had found yours. and if the phone ever rang again you knew you’d answer.

the diner is almost empty by the time you and michael step outside.
it’s late enough that most of the windows along the street are dark, and the neon sign above the diner buzzes quietly behind you.
you pull your jacket tighter around yourself.
“cold?”
michael looks over at you.
“a little.”
without saying anything, he takes off his jacket and drapes it over your shoulders.
“michael, you’ll freeze.”
“i’m fine.”
“you’re always saying that.”
he smiles.
“maybe.”
you look at him for a second, trying not to smile back.
tonight had been different.
you’ve known michael for a while now, but something about tonight feels different.
maybe it’s because you’ve spent the last three hours together, just the two of you, talking about everything and nothing.
maybe it’s because he’s been nervous all evening.
or maybe it’s because every time you look at him, he’s already looking at you.
“what?” you ask.
“nothing.”
“you’re staring.”
he looks away, laughing softly.
“i wasn’t.”
“you were.”
“maybe i was.”
you walk a little farther down the sidewalk.
the streets are almost completely empty. somewhere in the distance, you can hear a car passing, the sound fading until all that’s left is the quiet hum of the streetlights.
michael slows down.
you don’t notice at first.
then you realize he’s stopped completely.
you turn around.
“what are you doing, michael?”
he’s looking down the street.
you follow his gaze.
just an empty road stretching into the darkness.
“michael?”
he doesn’t answer.
“what are you looking at?”
“nothing.”
his voice sounds different.
almost quieter.
you take a step toward him.
“you sure? you’re scaring me.”
he finally looks back at you.
for a moment, he just stares.
then he smiles.
“yeah.”
he reaches for your hand.
his fingers are cold.
you squeeze them anyway.
“you’ve been acting strange all night.”
“have i?”
“yes.”
“maybe i’m nervous.”
you laugh.
“about what?”
he doesn’t answer right away.
instead, he looks down at your hands.
then back at you.
“there’s something i’ve been wanting to ask you.”
your heart skips.
“what?”
he hesitates.
“will you be my girlfriend?”
you blink.
for once, michael looks genuinely nervous.
you smile.
“yes.”
the relief on his face is almost immediate.
he laughs under his breath, looking down like he’s trying to hide how happy he is.
“really?”
“really.”
he looks back at you.
“good.”
“good?”
“very good.”
you laugh, and for a moment, everything feels completely normal.
then something moves in the trees across the road.
you stop laughing.
“did you hear that?”
michael’s smile disappears.
he looks toward the trees.
you wait for him to answer.
he doesn’t.
instead, his hand tightens around yours.
“don’t let go.”
you look at him.
“what?”
“just don’t.”
for a moment, the noise stops.
you brush it off.
“michael, don’t worry i probably misheard something, it’s probably nothing.”
then, the trees moved again.
you heard it more clear this time.
unmistakably clearly.
michael shook his head.
“no. you need to go home.”
“what?”
“right now.”
you laugh slightly, in disbelief.
“what do you mean go home?”
michael sighs.
“you don’t understand, you need to go home.”
you’re almost irritated now.
“you’re not even gonna take me home? i have to walk myself?”
you roll your eyes.
“real gentleman-like.”
michael doesn’t laugh.
he just stares at you.
“i’m not joking.”
you roll your eyes.
“okay, michael. whatever you say.”
you turn to walk away, but his hand catches your wrist.
“wait.”
you look back at him.
“what?”
he doesn’t answer.
his grip loosens almost immediately.
“i’m sorry.”
“for what?”
michael looks at you for a long moment.
then his eyes flick toward the trees.
you sigh.
“you’re seriously still worried about that?”
“yes.”
“there’s probably a raccoon out there.”
“it’s not a raccoon.”
you laugh.
“then what is it?”
silence.
michael looks down.
“i don’t know how to explain it.”
“try.”
he takes a breath.
“you remember when i told you there were things about me you didn’t know?”
you nod slowly.
“yeah.”
“i wasn’t joking.”
you stare at him.
“what are you talking about?”
he opens his mouth, but nothing comes out.
then he suddenly winces.
you notice immediately.
“michael?”
he takes a step back.
“don’t come any closer.”
“what’s wrong?”
“nothing.”
“you’re shaking.”
“i know.”
his breathing becomes uneven.
he looks down at his hands.
“michael?”
“you need to go.”
“you already said that.”
“please.”
his voice cracks.
you take a step toward him anyway.
“i’m not leaving you.”
he looks up.
for a second, he looks almost relieved.
then his expression changes.
his eyes squeeze shut.
he stumbles backward, grabbing onto the nearest tree.
“michael?”
you move toward him.
“don’t.”
you stop.
he’s breathing heavily now, his head bowed.
“i’m sorry,” he whispers.
“for what?”
he doesn’t answer.
his fingers tighten against the tree.
you hear a strange sound from him, almost like he’s trying to hold back a groan.
“michael? are you ok?”
he looks up.
and you freeze.
something about his eyes has changed.
the color looks different in the moonlight.
his pupils are wide.
scarily wide.
he looks at you like he doesn’t recognize you for a second.
then he turns away.
“you need to leave.”
“michael, you’re scaring me.”
“i know.”
he takes another shaky breath.
“i told you not to get involved with me.”
you don’t move, you can hardly move.
because right in front of you, michael’s whole expression changes again.
his eyes flash in the darkness.
his hands curl against his sides.
and when he looks back at you, there’s something unmistakably animal about him.
you take a slow step backward.
“michael…”
he looks terrified.
“don’t be scared of me.”
but you can’t help but be scared.
because the person standing in front of you still looks like michael, but he isn’t completely michael anymore.
michael turns his back towards you.
“please! please just go!”
you shake your head, “no! i can’t leave you like this.”
“i can’t let you see me like this.”
his voice was an octave lower now, almost a growl.
“michael, would you please tell me what’s happening? do you need help?”
michael’s body continues to shake.
from your view from the back of him, you suddenly see hair, almost fur, on his hands that was definitely not there before.
you move around him slightly to see more.
your eyes widen when you see he is covered in grey fur.
“michael? what the fuck is going on?”
he looks up at you with not the big, expressive brown eyes you remembered but bright orange eyes.
you scream.
“what is going on?”
michael flinches at your scream.
he looks away from you immediately.
“don’t.”
his voice is barely recognizable now.
you stumble backward, your heart pounding.
for a second, neither of you moves.
then michael looks at you again.
those bright orange eyes meet yours.
and somehow, underneath all of it, you can still see him.
the same michael who had been sitting across from you at the diner only an hour ago.
the same michael who had given you his jacket.
the same michael who had asked you to be his girlfriend.
“michael…”
his ears twitch at the sound of his name.
he takes one slow step toward you.
you instinctively step back.
he stops.
something in his expression changes.
hurt almost.
you swallow.
“you know who i am?”
he nods.
then he looks down at his hands.
claws, fur.
everything that shouldn’t be there.
“i’m sorry.”
the words come out as a low growl.
you shake your head, still trying to understand what you’re seeing.
“how?”
he looks toward the moon.
“it’s always been like this.”
you stare at him.
“you turn into… this?”
he nods.
“every full moon.”
“and you’ve been hiding it?”
“from everyone.”
he looks back at you.
“especially you.”
“why me?”
his expression softens.
“because i didn’t want you to be afraid of me.”
you almost laugh, except nothing about this is funny.
“well…”
you glance at him from head to toe.
“…that didn’t exactly work.”
for the first time since this started, michael almost smiles.
then he looks away.
“you should go.”
you shake your head.
“no.”
“you don’t understand.”
“then make me understand.”
he looks at you.
“you really aren’t scared?”
you hesitate.
“i am.”
his expression falls.
“but i’m more scared of leaving you here alone.”
he stares at you for a moment.
then slowly sits down against the tree.
the moonlight catches the grey fur covering his arms.
“when the sun comes up, i’ll be normal again.”
you sit down a few feet away from him.
“so i just have to wait?”
“yeah.”
“how long?”
“until morning.”
you look at him.
he looks back.
neither of you says anything for a while.
eventually, you pull his jacket tighter around yourself.
“you know,” you say quietly, “you could’ve told me.”
michael gives you a tired look.
“would you have believed me?”
you think about it.
“probably not.”
“exactly.”
you smile despite yourself.
“still would’ve been nice to know before i agreed to be your girlfriend.”
he laughs.
it’s quiet and rough, but it’s still his laugh.
that makes everything feel a little less frightening.
you sit there together until the sky begins to lighten.
slowly, the fur disappears.
his claws become hands again.
his eyes return to the familiar brown you know.
and when michael finally looks at you, he’s himself again.
just tired and embarrassed.
you smile.
“hi.”
he laughs softly.
“hi.”
you shake your head.
“you have a lot of explaining to do.”
“i know.”
you stand and hold out your hand.
he looks at it for a second before taking it.
“still my girlfriend?”
you smile.
“you asked me that before turning into a werecat.”
he looks down, almost shy.
“so?”
you squeeze his hand.
“yes, michael.”

december 2026 .
the phone wasn’t even supposed to work.
it had been sat in the back of your grandmother’s closet for years, tangled in old, dusty christmas lights and old chargers that didn’t even fit anything anyone owned anymore.
“vintage!” your friend called it.
“nope, electronic waste.” you corrected.
still, you plugged it in.
suddenly, it rang.
you answered it because it was 2026, an old piece of junk phone wasn’t actually ringing, it was probably just malfunctioning.
“hello?”
static.
“..hello?”
a young man’s voice, definitely not a malfunction.
“who is this?”
“i was about to ask you the same thing.”
you should’ve hung up, but you didn’t.
“tell me who you are first!”
“michael.”
“…michael?”
the line crackled slightly.
“jackson.”
you laughed.
“pfft, yeah right, that’s ridiculous.”
you carried on.
“and i’m rihanna.”
“..who?”
“you don’t know rihanna..?”
“no?..”
“right..”
maybe he was commited to the bit.
“so you’re michael jackson.. right?”
“yes.”
“the michael jackson?”
“i don’t know what you mean by the michael jackson.”
he sounded genuinely confused.
“you sing.”
“yes..”
“billie jean, right?”
“i haven’t.. i haven’t released that yet.”
silence.
you blinked, “excuse me?”
“i said i haven’t released that yet.”
“no i heard you.”
you grabbed your laptop from your bedside table and went to google.
michael jackson “billie jean” release date.
1983.
you frowned.
“wait.”
“what?”
“what did you say your name was again?”
“michael jackson.”
“and.. what year is it?”
“1982.”
you stopped typing, your fingers hovered above the keyboard.
you nervously laughed.
“that’s— that’s not funny.”
“i’m not joking?”
“no.” you shook your head.
“if you’re gonna prank call, atleast use a year after smartphones.”
“smart.. what?”
you went silent for longer this time.
“okay.” you laughed nervously.
“if this is one of those ai voice things, it’s really scarily convincing.”
“.. what’s ai?”
your stomach dropped.
you were slightly whispering now.
“can you.. can you tell me todays date?”
“december 5th.”
“..and the year?”
“1982.”
you looked down to the calender on your laptop screen.
december 5 2026.
44 years, exactly.
neither of you spoke.
until michael broke the silence.
“are you.. still there?”
you swallowed.
“yeah..”
another pause.
“what year did you say it was for you?”
you looked back at the glowing numbers on your screen, then at the old phone in your hand.
“you wouldn’t believe me.”
“i have a feeling.. that i might.”
you stared at the phone.
“2026.”
silence stretched between you.
“twenty.. twenty six.”
he said it like he was just learning numbers for the first time.
“yeah.”
“44 years?”
“yeah.”
“if this is a joke..” he laughed nervously, “it’s a very elaborate one.”
“i could say the same to you!”
“i suppose you could.”
you smiled.
“so.. how can we prove it?” he asked.
“i don’t know..”
“there must be something.”
you glanced around your room slightly, not sure what for though.
your eyes landed on a digital clock placed on your desk.
“i could tell you things about your future.” you suggested.
when he spoke again he sounded slightly different, cautious almost.
“i don’t know if i want to know my future.”
that stopped you, you hadn’t considered that.
you knew what happened during his life, and you wouldn’t want to know either.
“..you’re right,” you said softly. “forget i suggested that.”
“what if..” he started.
“what?”
“if you told me something that’s already happened, something i’d know.”
you frowned.
“like what?”
“i don’t know.” he laughed, “you’re supposed to be from the future.”
you laid back on your bed, staring at the ceiling. thinking.
“okay.. you released thriller in 1982.”
“yes.”
“it became the biggest selling album ever.”
a pause.
“..really?”
“really.”
“..how would you know that?”
“because.. where i’m from everyone knows that.”
for a moment, none of you spoke.
then he spoke, in almost a whisper.
“i always hoped people would remember it, remember me.”
your chest tightened.
“they do.”
you swallowed.
“they really, really do.”
all you could hear now was michael’s breathing.
“i..” he laughed nervously, “don’t really know what to say.”
“you don’t have to.”
“i’ve spent years wondering if any of it truly matters.”
“it does.”
“..how can you be so sure?”
you smiled.
“i just am.”
“thank you.”
you looked out your window.
the city was settling into evening. cars passed beneath your apartment, people walked dogs, someone somewhere was playing music loud enough to hear through the glass.
“so…” you said, “what were you doing before the phone rang?”
“i couldn’t sleep.”
“me neither.”
“i was pacing through my room.” he laughed quietly. “trying to avoid rehearsing.”
“you procrastinate?”
“terribly.”
you grinned.
“that’s actually comforting.”
“why?”
“i don’t know.” you shrugged, even though he couldn’t see it. “it’s nice finding out legends are just people.”
there was a pause.
“…legends?”
you froze.
“…forget I said that.”
“i don’t think I can.”
heat crept onto your face.
“please.”
he chuckled.
“i’ll pretend I didn’t hear it.”
“you’d better.”
“i make no promises.”
for the first time since answering the phone, you laughed without forcing it.
“…you have a nice laugh,” he said.
you blinked.
“so do you.”
another silence.
a comfortable one this time.
“so,” he asked after a while, “what do people do for fun in 2026?”
you smiled.
“oh god, you’re going to regret asking me that.”
“why?”
“because i have to explain the internet.”
“the what?”
you laughed again.
“okay… imagine if your television, your radio, your newspaper, your telephone, your mail, and every library in the world got mashed together.”
“…that sounds exhausting.”
“it kind of is.”
you both laughed.
it’s now been a couple weeks.
you find yourself on the dusty, old telephone talking to michael jackson practically every night.
surprising, you’ve become good friends.
december 29 .
it was again one of those nights where you found yourself sat in bed with the telephone, talking to michael.
“i wish i could meet you.” he said softly.
“like me, right now, with you, right now.. or in the future?”
you laughed, “what?”
“i don’t know! it’s confusing!” he laughed with you, “i just.. wish i could see you, right now.”
your chest tightened slightly.
“me too.”
michael was silent for a moment.
“..well what about me now? in 2026..”
you went silent.
you couldn’t tell him.
you wouldn’t forgive yourself if you told him.
what were you supposed to even say if you were to tell him?
“what about you?”
“can you not meet me?”
“maybe i’ll remember you!”
your heart ached for him.
“you said you didn’t want to know about your future.”
“..well.” his voice softened, “i don’t know.” he admitted.
“you made it sound..” he paused, searching for the word. “complicated.”
you stared at the cord wrapped around your finger.
“it is.”
“but you’re still here.”
“..yeah.”
“you still answer when i call.”
you smiled sadly.
“i’ll always answer when you call.”
the words slipped out before you could stop them.
michael didn’t say anything for a while.
“i think..” his voice barely above a whisper.
“i think if we never meet.. i’d still be glad i knew you.”
your eyes stung.
you laughed slightly to stop yourself from crying.
“you’re making this really difficult.”
“i’m sorry.”
“no, no.” you whispered, “don’t be.”
the line crackled.
for a second, you thought the call was going to end.
“do you think..” michael began, “that some people are just meant to find eachother?”
you looked down at the old telephone sat in your lap.
a phone that should not work.
a phone that should not connect two people 44 years apart.
“..i think,” you said slowly, “maybe..”
another silence settled between the two of you.
comfortable and sad.
neither of you wanted the call to end.
“it’s getting late.” he said eventually.
“it is.”
“i’ll call tomorrow?”
“you’d better.”
he laughed softly.
“i will.”
“..goodnight michael.”
“goodnight.”
the line clicked, static.
then nothing.
you stayed there for a long time holding the receiver to your ear, listening to the empty line, hoping he’d come back.
he didn’t.
you placed the phone on your bedside table.
outside, snow began to fall.
you glanced at the calendar.
december 29 2026 .
for some reason, you just couldn’t shake this feeling that something was bound to change.

november 1993 .
backstage, the air buzzed uncontrolled chaos. stage managers hurried past with clipboards, and dancers stretched one last time taking deep breaths before going out in front of the swarm.
michael’s dangerous tour was coming to an end so the security team was just slightly more on edge than usual.
security guards were checking every exit and entrance. in the middle of all the chaos. someone frowned at their walkie talkie.
“has anyone seen michael?!”
another voice crackled back. “no its five minutes until showtime!!”
“and no one can find michael?”
“no!”
and there you were, being dragged below stage. michael holding you by your wrist.
“shh, be quiet,” michael had his finger to his lips.
you bit back a laugh. “michael, your entire security team is looking for you.”
“i know.”
you shook your head, trying not to smile. “you’re unbelievable.”
he glanced over his shoulder, listening as muffled footsteps passed somewhere above you. after a second he looked back, his voice barely above a whisper.
“just.. stay quiet, ‘kay?”
you nodded, trying not to laugh.
he led you a little farther until the narrow hallways opened into a small space beneath the stage. thick steel beams stretched overhead, cables snaked across concrete floor, and every few seconds the platform above trembled beneath the weight of dancers taking their places. even from down here, the roar of thousands of fans poured through the structure like distant thunder growing louder with every passing moment.
every few seconds the entire structure shivered beneath the dancers taking their places above them. dust drifted lazily through thin shafts of light slipping between the floorboards, and somewhere overhead the opening notes of the intro music echoed through the stadium.
michael finally let go of your wrist, exhaling as he leaned back against one of the support beams. for the first time since pulling you away, he seemed to relax slightly. his shoulders dropped, and he shut his eyes for just a seconds, letting the noise wash over him.
“…i think we lost ’em.”
you laughed, trying to catch your breath.
“you’re acting like we’re fugitives.”
“aren’t we?”
“no.”
“feels like it.”
another wave of footsteps thundered overhead, followed by the muffled crackle of someone’s walkie talkie.
“check under stage left.”
michael’s eyes widened.
“…okay, maybe we are.”
you both laughed uncontrollably.
michael held onto your shoulders, “okay, okay, shh..”
his smile lingered, but it slowly softened into something quieter. he looked down at the concrete floor, rubbing his hands against his thighs nervously before speaking again.
“before every show..” he murmured, “everybody wants somethin’ from me. wardrobe’s askin’ questions, the bands askin’ questions, security’s talking, managers are talkin’..” he let out a small breath. “it’s loud.”
“too loud.”
you stepped a little closer, saying nothing, close enough that your shoulders almost touched.
“i just..” he glanced up at you, his expression gentle.
“wanted one minute with us where i could be myself.”
he absentmindedly rubbed his thumb over one of the rings on his fingers.
the words settled between you above your heads, the crowd suddenly erupted into another wave of screams, loud enough to rattle beams overhead. somewhere backstage, a muffled voice shouted his name through a walkie talkie, followed by hurried footsteps crossing the stage above.
you smiled warmly. "well... you've got your minute."
his eyes never left yours. a shy smile slowly returned to his face as he rocked back on his heels.
"...one more thing."
he rocked gently on his heels.
you tilted your head. "what?"
he laughed under his breath, suddenly looking almost embarrassed. "don't make fun of me."
he opened his mouth.
closed it again.
“what?”
“…nothin’.”
“michael.”
“…it’s silly.”
“tell me.”
he smiled sheepishly, “…promise you won’t laugh?”
“i promise.”
“…cross your heart?”
you laughed.
“cross my heart.”
he looked down, suddenly fascinated by the floor.
he hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck before meeting your eyes again.
"...good luck kiss?"
your lips curled into a smile. "i was wondering when you were gonna ask."
his eyes lit up immediately.
“…really?”
“really.”
“that easy?” he raised his eyebrow slightly.
“did you want me to say no first?”
he laughed.
“…no.”
“good.”
his cheeks flushed, and he let out a bashful laugh before closing the distance between you.
his lips met yours in a soft, lingering kiss, gentle enough that it made the chaos raging above your heads disappear. for a few precious seconds, it was just the two of you beneath the stage, the distant roar of thousands of fans fading into the background.
when he finally pulled away, he rested his forehead against yours with a grin.
"now i'm ready."
“…i think it worked.”
you laughed, “you haven’t even gone on stage yet.”
“i already feel luckier.”
you rolled your eyes, “yeah.. okay.”
almost on cue, a muffled voice echoed through the steel beams overhead.
"michael! thirty seconds!"
you both froze.
“that’s probably for you.”
he sighed dramatically.
“…i was hoping if i stayed quiet long enough they’d cancel the concert.”
“that’s not how concerts work.”
“…worth a shot to stay with you.”
he dropped his arms to his side.
"welp, that's my cue," he murmured, giving you one last quick peck before turning toward the stairs. with a final smile over his shoulder, he disappeared up the steps. you watched every step he took, and a heartbeat later the stadium erupted as he ran out into the spotlight.
the opening music shook the beams overhead.
thousands upon thousands of voices screamed his name all at once.
you couldn’t help but smile.
only a minute ago, he’d been hiding beneath the stage because he needed one quiet moment.

established!relationship, fluff
a soft knock came at your door.
you already knew who it was.
you and michael had already planned to meet earlier today.
but michael wanted to go shopping first, not with you, by himself.
that was fine by you.
as long as he got you something.
“come in,”
the door creaked open, and michael stood there with his hands behind his back.
you smiled.
“so you got me something?”
michael closed the door behind him and leaned on it.
“what makes you think that?” he smiled back.
you sat upright against the headboard.
“come on, show me!” you whined.
he brought his hands from behind his back.
it was a stuffed animal.
now most people would be disappointed by that, but you couldn’t think of much better.
what was even better was that it was also your favourite animal, a deer.
michael was attentive like that.
you didn’t speak about your favourite animal much, but he always knew.
you looked at it then up and michael.
then smiled bigger than you think you ever had before.
“is that for me, really?”
michael smiled and sat next to you on your bed.
he handed it to you.
you stared at it for a moment, in awe.
“i love it so much michael, thank you,”
michael looked happy but also relieved.
“i was scared you were expecting more,”
you laughed.
“are you kidding?”
“i love stuffed animals,”
“i know, that’s why i got it,”
you furrowed your eyebrows.
“so why would i expect more?”
michael shrugged, lying next to you.
you held onto the stuffed animal for the rest of the night, while you were watching movies, playing board games, the whole lot.
you and michael were about to go to sleep.
you were still holding onto the stuffed animal.
“michael?”
“mhm?”
“i think i’m gonna call this, michael,”
michael turned to look at you and laughed.
“that’s stupid,”
“no it’s not,”
he rolled his eyes playfully.
“i love both michaels,”
you have slept with the stuffed animal everyday since, and plan on it forever.
sorry this was actually way shorter than expected but it’s just a filler for while i’m working on the longer ones.

⋆˙⟡ — summary: you’re michael jacksons childhood bsf spending the summer at hayvenhurst and develop a crush on one of his brothers — and michael does everything he can to keep you both apart

the familiar crunch of gravel echoed beneath your tires as you eased your car to a stop infront of hayvenhurst gates.
california’s late afternoon sun painted everything in a warm honey-like golden glow, making the sprawling estate look exactly how you remembered it.
you switched of the engine and sat there for a moment, fingers resting on the steering wheel.
it had been months since you last visited the jackson family.
with a quiet sigh, you open the door to your pink cadillac seville and climb out, smoothing your clothing before reaching into the back of the car for your bags.
the scent of freshly cut grass and blooming flowers overwhelmed you, and despite being away for so long, hayvenhurst still felt like a second home to you.
a smile tugged at your lips,
you barely had time to close the door to your car before the front door to the house swung open.
michael.
looking estatic to see you,
he runs over to you and pulls you into a tight hug, making you drop your bag.
you wince at how tight he’s holding you,
he pulls away from the hug and looks at you, his hands still holding just below your shoulders.
“you’re finally here!” he says, smiling.
you laugh, “yeah, i’m here”
“well? did you not miss me?”
michael had always loved to tease you, and here he is, teasing once again.
“of course i missed you!”
he laughs while picking up two of your bags,
“come on, let’s go inside”
you pick up your remaining bags and head inside with michael.
the front door opened before you or michael could reach it, familiar voices flooding the porch.
mrs. jackson was the first to greet you, pulling you into a warm hug, telling you how much she missed you, then the brothers greeted you, one by one.
“long time no see” marlon says as he pulls you into a hug.
you laugh, “yeah,”
the hug seems to linger longer than the rest, making your stomach flip.
“come on, i’ll show you to your room” michael interrupted and started heading up the stairs.
you smile at marlon and follow behind michael.
you were shown to the room you spent most childhood summer in.
fresh sheets covered the bed, sunlight poured through the curtains, and a small vase with beautiful flowers sat on the bedside table.
you set your bags next to the bed and glanced around the room with a smile.
michael left the rest of your bags near the door and left you to unpack.
you plopped down onto the bed and sighed.
it really did feel like coming back home.
before you had a chance to unpack, voices drifted in from downstairs, followed by someone calling your name, inviting you to join everyone outside.
the sky was now a deep navy, the stars glittering above you.
you joined to sit the family at their bonfire, the fire crackled softly sending tiny embers into the night sky.
you were sat in between marlon and michael.
everyone sat in a circle on their lawn chairs with blankets, marshmallows roasting on the fire while music drifted faintly from the house.
you laughed as marlon held up a marshmallow that had caught fire.
“i think you’re supposed to toast it,” you teased, trying, and failing, to hide your smile.
“i like it crispy,” he defended, with a grin, waving the stick until the tiny flame disappeared.
“it adds character,”
“you mean it adds charcoal,”
the two of you burst out laughing, drawing a few amused glances from the other siblings.
next to you, michael poked and prodded the logs on the fire with his stick, smiling when the others laughed, but his eyes lingered on the way you leaned toward marlon, the way your shoulders bumped as you giggled over something he didn’t even find that funny.
“y’know,” michael chimed in, forcing a light-hearted smile, “she used to burn every marshmallow she made.”
“i did not,” you protested.
“you absolutely did,”
marlon looked between the two of you, amused, “looks like someones trying to embarrass you.”
michael shrugged, “just telling the truth.”
you rolled your eyes with a laugh, chucking a rolled up tissue in michaels direction.
he caught it easily, grinning for a brief moment, before his gaze drifted back to you and marlon.
he couldn’t tell why it bothered him.
maybe he just wasn’t used to sharing your attention.
the bonfire began to die down, siblings heading inside one by one, until marlon stood up to head inside.
“try not to burn your breakfast in the morning like you did the marshmallow,” you laugh.
he turns to look at you and laughs, “worry about yourself.”
michael watches the interaction, forcing a smile, before quietly saying, “come on, i’ll take you inside.”
michael walks you into the house, and up to your room, “goodnight.”
you smile at him, “goodnight applehead.”
he looks flustered before smiling and walking off to his own bedroom.
you settle down and head to bed.
the sunlight spills through the curtains and the birds begin to cheep.
you roll over in bed and rub your eyes.
somewhere downstairs, the muffled sounds of laughter echoed through the house, followed by the clatter of dishes and the unmistakable scent of breakfast.
with a very sleepy sigh, you stretched beneath the covers and rolled out of bed.
you’d almost forgotten how lively and upbeat mornings at hayvenhurst were.
after getting dressed and brushing your hair, you made your way downstairs.
the house was already buzzing with conversation, music humming softly from a near radio as everyone gathered in the kitchen.
mrs. jackson was first to greet you as you stepped inside, “good morning sweetheart, did you sleep well?”
you smiled, nodding as you accepted a plate of pancakes and fresh fruit.
the table was full of chatter as all of michaels siblings were talking over eachother, as usual.
just as you settled into your seat next to michael, jermaine suggested a pool day.
a chorus of eager agreement filled the room almost instantly.
it didn’t take much convincing.
the california sun was already climbing higher into the sky, promising another warm day where the pool was most likely needed.
you walked out into the garden in your teal bikini, where the boys were in the pool and the girls were lounging beside the pool.
music playing softly from a radio.
michael was sat on a floaty with his sunglasses on, randy and jermaine splashing him with water.
you stand there for a moment, taking everything in.
you sigh, a good sigh.
suddenly behind you, marlon comes and pushes you into the pool.
you shriek as you land beside michael’s floaty, splashing michael from your fall.
you swim to the surface, “marlon!”
he laughs and jumps in, splashing you.
“you shouldn’t have done that!” you laugh and start splashing him.
a splash war breaks out, you and marlon laughing and grabbing eachother.
jermaine, randy, jackie and janet join, everyone getting soaked.
while you were having fun, you didn’t realise that michael had gotten out of the pool and was now sat on a lounge chair.
you swam over to the side of the pool, your arms folded, resting on the patio.
“hey, why’d you get out?”
michael still had his sunglasses on so you couldn’t tell if he was looking at you or not.
“everyone was splashing and i didn’t want to be splashed.”
“oh,”
michaels never usually like that, he usually is in the pool with you.
you just assume he’s not feeling very well and swim back to where the fun is.
everyone eventually gets tired and hungry, so you all sit around the pool eating snacks.
you were perched at the end of the pool with marlon, eating popsicles.
absentmindedly kicking your feet in the pool beneath the surface.
“y’know, i’m pretty sure i won that splash war,”
you scoff, “hardly, i clearly won,”
marlon tilts his head, “well, i gotta say.. i never lose,”
you laugh, “oh, really?”
“yeah, really.”
you leaned over just enough to splash a handful of water in his direction.
he gasped dramatically before scooping up twice as much and launching it at you.
“hey!” you squealed, shielding your face while you both laughed.
across the pool, michael was watching you and marlon just over the rim of his glasses, he shook his head while pretending to be more interested in his snacks than what was happening between you and marlon.
“you two done?” michael called across the pool.
“or should we just leave you two over there?”
you looked up at michael, “coming!”
before either of you could move, jackie wandered over, carrying a plate full of fruit.
“alright,” he announced, dropping onto a lounge chair, “i’ve got a question.”
a few heads turned.
“what?” tito asked.
jackie smirked, “anybody got a summer crush?”
a chorus of groans immediately followed.
“oh brother,” marlon muttered and rubbed his forehead.
“you ask the weirdest questions,” michael laughed, though it sounded a little forced to you.
jackie shrugged.
“what? it’s a perfectly normal question.”
one by one, everybody gave joke answers, laughing the whole time.
then jackie’s eyes landed on you,
“how about you?”
your heart skipped a beat.
for a second, you glanced at marlon without even thinking about it.
it was only for a moment, but long enough for michael to notice.
he looked away almost immediately, forcing a smile as the conversation around him carried on.
but that glance stayed with him for reasons he couldn’t explain.
by late afternoon, everyone was searching for a way to cool down and escape the california heat.
“we should go get ice cream!” marlon suggests as he flops onto one of the lounge chairs.
tito laughs, “i ain’t saying no to that.”
suddenly everyone was hopping into the cars.
you climbed into the backseat, scooting over to make room, just as you reached for the seat belt, the passenger door opened.
marlon climbed in, “mind if i sit here?” he asked with a grin.
“course not,”
he slid in beside you, shutting the door behind him.
“y’know i’m still waiting for that apology,” he says, nudging your shoulder.
you looked confused, “what apology?”
“for trying to drown me in the pool,”
a laugh escaped your lips, “you started it,”
“i absolutely did not,”
“oh, you definitely did”
the two of you continued bickering, not accepting defeat.
outside the car, michael paused as he saw you two laughing together.
you two always usually sit together, now you’re sat with marlon.
silently, michael slides into the front seat, he glanced into the rearview mirror as more laughter erupted from you and marlon.
“what’re you two laughing about?” michael sounded blunt.
marlon answered before you could.
“she’s trying to convince me she didn’t splash me first,”
“pretty sure she did.”
you gasped, “michael!”
he let out a quiet laugh but his smile faded as he looked back.
he wasn’t upset.
atleast.. that’s what he was telling himself.
everyone had eaten their ice cream and now you were all back home, flooding into the house.
michael silently slipped away into his bedroom.
you followed.
you quietly knocked on his bedroom door, “michael? can i come in?”
the door creaked open slowly, “what?”
“i.. just wanted to talk to you,”
“can we.. go outside to talk instead?”
you nod and you both head outside.
you and michael lay on the grass staring at the stars, it feels like old times.
after sitting there in silence for a while, michael speaks,
“when you looked at marlon like that.. i wish it was me you were looking at,”
you look over at michael, “what? why?”
he sits up and looks at you, suddenly looking shy.
“because.. i think i’ve liked you for a long time, and i know you like marlon so don’t feel—“
you interrupt him.
“you like me?”
he puts his head in his hands.
you hold his hand, he stares at your interlinked hands, cheeks going red.
he opens his mouth to say something, anything.
before he could you stop him.
“just— don’t.”
and you and michael sit there, in the dark, the stars twinkling above you, holding hands.
