Not a perfect book, but a very good one. Tells a fictionalized account of an institutional "school" for boys, an alternative to prison, where boys were beaten and killed, especially in the black houses. Emotional portrayal, but not one that had me sobbing, which is kind of nice. Hidden figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly: I'm not gonna lie, I found the beginning of this book very slow. But by the middle, it really picked up and told the story I wanted to hear. (And I do think what came before was probably necessary backstory in order to understand.) I thought the women in the book came to life and that I would have wanted to be friends with them. They are great role models in perseverance and in not letting opportunity pass you by. I am grateful to have learned about them.
He's My Only Vampire, vol 7, by Aya Shouoto: Still not my favorite issue of the series. I cannot overcome how docile Kana is all the time - be your own damn person! I'm also a little perturbed bc Eriya is back, and I can't stand him! It's a little anticlimactic to hate the person the series is supposed to be about saving. I will finish the series bc I'm invested, but I'm disappointed in the last few volumes.
Tokyo ESP, vol 2: This second volume wasn't as great as the first, but I'm leaving that to 2nd book syndrome and will keep reading. I did like the plot line overall, but found the character's responses to what was happening to be a bit tedious and, at times, to not flow well with who their characters have been. I didn't find the characters to be as believable and realistic as in the first volume. But the action was still on point, and the illustalrations were very interesting still. Will hope for better in the next volume.
My Lady Jane, by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows: Honestly, this was one of my favorite reads of the year! I loved the snarky humor and the realistic relationships and relatable characters. The plot really kept my interest, and the fourth wall breaks by the "narrators" were hilarious. The idea to give a fantasy twist to Lady Jane Grey is off the wall, but it worked so well. I never wanted it to end

My first day with nothing to do in months! So of course I sleep way late, and spend the afternoon and evening reading!
Read on audio, via overdrive app: I loved this book. It was all about the dynamics of the family and what went wrong as a unit. The characters' thoughts and interactions were so real. None of them were perfect, and each ones imperfections affected other members of the family. I also loved that it was set in the 1970s, and that the story jumped around a bit in the timeline. It added extra depth to what was happening, and somehow helped the story flow easily.
