I was privileged to make the third week of “Unloaded” at the Marcia Wood Gallery. Some how I found time to make it into Atlanta, during the week, and over to Clover Hill. I had only seen the building on Google earth till today and my first take was an expected one, I was looking for the beautifully restored typography on the building. Once found I hit the buzzer for entry, than made a phone call for entry, and finally I got in they are busy people.
It took me about a half- hour to make it through the first section. The gallery is set up with in two buildings and small sculpture park in between the two where art is observed in the elements. If you’ve seen the baby bear sculpted out of ammunition, found in some of the advertisements there are two others similar to it here in the park. The rain didn’t allow me to see those without a plastic covering. The second building is full of the dashboard sponsored Atlanta-Based art. In there is a video installation with loud “bangs,” and “pops,” what you would expect at a Gun Show. The height of the second building I would have to say are the photography. Photos bring out the reality of gun culture, humans are the most affected by it; and photos are the print making of our reality. We had a tumultuous fall/winter in 2016 with gun deaths in America. Gun reform, 2nd amendment rights are always in the fore front. This exhibit makes our love affair with preserving life, clear. It puffs out the chest of those who aim to protect, and deflates the bubble with which some live in who believe guns have no use in modern society. Remember playing with sticks growing up “bang, bang.”
This exhibit is more than expected. It will stay on exhibit until the twentieth of May get out there and experience it for your self. I grabbed some photos but because I want folks to see the show I am only going to show some of what I enjoyed; you got to show up if you want more.
