His limbs shook now, sweat beading on the ridge of his brow. If he glanced down at his hands, Loki knew they would be next to paper white. This wasn’t what he had bargained for. It wasn’t why he had finally given up the mantle of his sorry existence by letting his fingers slip from the edge of the Bifrost. His last vision, he had thought, would be Thor’s wide eyes getting smaller and smaller until they disappeared into the blackness of deep space, leaving Loki to freeze there.
“I doubt he even spared a thought for you after it happened,” came a familiar voice. Loki’s chest constricted, bracing for the pain that soon shot through his temple as a blinding purple light had him choking. It was worse now. He had endured this before, but his mind couldn’t stop shooting to Thor, to the way his own green eyes had filled with tears at the sight of that pain that he knew so well flowing through his brother. The only brother he had ever known. The only brother he had competed with, had envied, and had cared for immeasurably.
The Mind Stone didn’t work as well on the strong willed, Thanos had told him. Loki had possessed a remarkable mental acuity, he had also been told. But, as with all who dared to oppose the Mad Titan, Loki had fallen. Falling forward after being released from that searing pain, tears cut through the grime on Loki’s face and the taste of blood in his mouth reminded him how hard he had bitten down. It was all too real. And yet… how could he truly be alive? How?
Through the steam on the desolate rock, Loki squinted, catching sight of a figure before he managed to respond to Thanos, “As much as… I’d like to believe you,” Loki bit out, “you don’t know Thor well if you think… that’s the case.”
“Do you think that, if Odin willed it, Thor would step in for you? Or would he watch me destroy you? You the unfavoured. The unloved.”
When the pain returned, Loki cried out. But it was wrong. Different. Through the purple light, for a moment he thought he could see Thor. Standing and watching?
When his green eyes went the same blue as the Mind Stone’s glow, Thanos had him. Again, would his consciousness fade away and be replaced with lies that even the father of untruth couldn’t see past?
Loki didn’t often let himself weep anymore. But when Thanos’ voice filled his mind, he was sure he could see Thor. Even as his lips repeated Thanos purporting of Loki’s unworthiness, his lack of belonging, his status as nothing more than a scourge–a speck of dust in the wind, Loki thought he could see his brother standing there. And even when Thanos inexplicably disappeared, that blue of his eyes remained. That lingering of the Mind Stone’s control. Still, it was so… different.
every moment that thor thought that he’d find a reprieve from his living shame, he soon would find a new layer added to it. he had hurt his father, not physically of course, but emotionally - mentally - all of the ones that mattered longer and hurt the more time had taken its toll. hanging his head, he couldn’t bear to look up and see what faces would be staring back; the disappointed and confused stares of a stranger seemed far worse to him than that of a familiar.
but there was a voice, one that came familiar to him - but not a welcome one. bringing his head up, he spotted two figures in the distance, it was odd -- thor could have sworn he was on a street in new mexico, and now? now he was.... he wasn’t sure where. something guided him on, an instinct that told him that whoever - no, that was loki - loki? alive? yes, alive... was in danger.
he heard his own name come from the titan’s mouth and a darkened sort of rage began to fuel through him. quickening his pace, the god started to run at the two figures, letting out a battle hardened yell as he charged, only to stop short when thanos simply disappeared. turning in a circle, he looked around him, his brow raised high before he stopped to peer into the face of his young brother. “loki?” he asked, cautiously taking a step forward, lifting his hand to reach out towards his brother. “wha-- what is wrong? your eyes... they seem... not yours, brother, what has happened? where are we?”
