「beanie feldstein | 23 | ciswoman」 EDITH ‘EDIE’ ADLER studies THEATRE and ENGLISH LITERATURE and i think SHE is in SECOND YEAR. also, pretty sure SHE lives in BLIGHT HOUSE and they call HER the PERFECTIONIST. probably because SHE is HIGHLY MOTIVATED, CONFIDENT, HIGH STRUNG and OBSESSIVE. 「em | 24 | AEST | she/her」
when edie was in primary school, a teacher asked her to read a passage aloud to the class and she’s spent almost the entirety of the rest of her life chasing the high of that moment. by all accounts a bright and charismatic child, she excelled at reading, writing, and most forms of creative expression. she would spend her weekends and school holidays putting together ‘shows’ for her family; usually one woman shows unless she could convince her younger brother to join as the leading man. sometimes they were dramatic renditions of tv shows she had watched recently, or dance recitals to whatever song was stuck in her head, sometimes even recitations of ‘original poetry’ she had written. in an effort to channel all of this energy, her parents signed her up for acting classes and edie fell in love with performance.
for secondary school, edie begged to go to a performing arts school, where she was sure her talents would be nurtured. her parents agreed, if only because they knew their daughter was fiercely determined; she was a hard person to say NO to even at eleven years old. her new school was everything she dreamed of, there was a new performance each term, and no one gave her weird looks when bringing up shakespeare in casual conversation. at first it was easy for her to write off not receiving major roles ; of course she wouldn’t be a leading lady in seventh or eighth grade. but once she reached tenth grade without being cast in anything other than glorified chorus roles, she grew despondent.
for most people, this might have resulted in the realization that maybe they weren’t cut out for the spotlight. but edie was far too determined. when auditions came around for the next musical, she worked herself to the bone, learning every part, ready to take on ANYTHING that was thrown at her. edie KNEW it was her best audition yet, so she wasn’t at all surprised to see her name on the casting sheet. looking out at the crowd on opening night gave her a rush unlike anything she had ever felt. she continued to grace the stage through her final years of schooling, and when the question of university came up edie spoke openly of her intention to apply to the national theatre school of canada.
so open were her ambitions that almost everyone she knew was aware that edie had applied to audition. perhaps that was why the rejection hit so hard. she hadn’t even reached the second round of auditions when she received the letter. it was gut-wrenching. she found herself with no clue where to go from there, what to do. she had given her life to performance. with no back up schools, nothing else she wanted to do, she took a couple of years off to work, finding a job in a bookshop. this job was a lifeline for edie ; reigniting her love of reading and allowing her the freedom to participate in some local community theatre at the same time.
she wasn’t sure exactly what gave her the idea to start looking at universities again but staring at the enrollment page for somers university, edie decided to take the plunge. originally she thought about enrolling only for the english literature course, thinking that perhaps she could pursue teaching secondary english if all else failed. but the siren song of the theatre major drew her in, and she found herself enrolling in both.
somers has been a second chance at life for edie, rediscovering her passions and talents, reigniting her motivation and competitive streak. she entered the university somewhat shattered, but if somer’s reputation is to believed, edie will emerge from its chrysalis perfected.
