Beta Behaviour in Misceanimalis/Misceverse

As many others I have noticed that Betas tend to get ignored in this community, and are just labelled as “normal” or essentially dynamic-less or at best as neutral soothers. If you identify this way all power to you, however I have decided to establish my own headcanon of behaviour that personally resonates for the Betas in our system, and seemingly another Beta outside of it. If this resonates for you too, I would love to know. :) I hope this brings you joy and affirms your identity.

General Temperament

Like the current understanding, I also believe there is a level of cool-headedness and deep focus to be at the core of a Beta’s instincts. However one of the most important aspects about Betas in terms of pack dynamics is their desire to establish wider territory. Alphas and Omegas have been established in the past as homemakers, homebodies that stay indoors and den and nest and create one safe haven. However I believe that Betas are very different in that they crave going outdoors and being aware of who is in their surroundings and the territory that they have set in their mind. Betas are prone to cabin fever levels of annoyance at being indoors but doing things like opening windows can improve their overall mood.

What Betas do instead of Nesting or Denning

Typically Betas do not nest or den but instead do an activity known as “Sprucing” where they will go into established pack homes (or their own if they do not have a pack) and adjust things. Unlike Omegas whose main goal in nesting is comfort and Alphas whose main priority is security when denning, Beta sprucing behaviour is based around ease of access and maintaining order amongst the chaos.

Sensory Seeking Behaviour and Beta Senses

Betas in general crave a specific type of contact known as deep pressure, and have particular parts on their body which are more sensitive to this contact or that they like to be squished. In one specific spot it can help a Beta get into headspace and it is similar to scruffing but not quite as scruffing is about going loose and unaware. However Beta headspace is focused in and is cool and calm. Betas love weighted blankets and any sort of soft weighted object with which they can comfort themselves with. A Beta's sense of smell is not as strong but they are more sensitive visually and hearing wise, which aids them with their outside and wider territory protection and maintenance instincts.

Beta to Beta Interactions

Betas are great together and often tend to go in groups. While it is unusual to see a pack formed purely of one dynamic, it is possible for Betas to form a cohesive pack. One of the most important behaviours that Betas do with each other is called linking where Betas will get in a very tight hug with each other so every body part is touching. They will then gently squeeze each other and hum to each other to express their joy. It is a social taboo to separate Betas during this time as they are both vulnerable and protective of each other. Betas also enjoy holding parts of other’s body parts in their mouth such as an arm, a hand or a finger and lightly bite down. It helps them feel secure and is a soothing behaviour. This is not Beta to Beta exclusive but is often performed with other Betas.

Beta Cycle

Betas experience a cycle commonly known as Ardor that lasts anywhere from three days to a week. During this time they feel cold, need extra pressure and feel contained by being inside. They don't like to be inside and they need to patrol their territory for a long time which can lead to exhaustion and fatigue so often their pack need to help them (usually other Betas walking with them) or help them warm up with a nice warm bath or letting them organise things and giving those deep pressure hugs and lots of linking. Their behaviour during this time is restless and they are very distressed if unable to confirm the safety of the territory. At the end of Ardor once a Beta is satisfied truly with their territory they will attempt to find a partner to be with. However the majority of Ardor is non-sexual and is instead focused on the safety of the group. Some Betas do not feel the sexual urges at all.

this post is inspired by @beta-adjacent’s post about bite marks. i got really emotional thinking about friends exchanging bites and wanted to say more about it lol

bonding bite facts

bite scars, like all other scars, vary in visibility and permanence from person to person. in historical practice, various substances (clay, ash, or ink, most commonly) were applied to a fresh bite to improve visibility and permanence. modern practice uses ‘bite powder’ or ‘bite ink’ for those who want a more permanent, easily detectable scar. this is the most common scarification practice, present in most cultures globally.

bites can be exchanged in various locations on the body. claiming or mating bites tend to be found at the scent glands on the neck, but can be left anywhere on the body. marking other locations are considered nontraditional—it would be akin to wearing a wedding ring on a finger other than the left ring finger (in cultures where that is the traditional location).

healthy bonding bites do not typically affect a person’s inherent scent. a person may release more detectable ‘happy pheromones’ after exchanging bites with a loved one, but these tend to fade after a few weeks. conversely, a person may release more detectable ‘distressed pheromones’ after receiving a bite under duress, and these tend to linger much longer.

biting someone who accepts under duress is no different from biting someone who has clearly rejected it. in the US, forcing a bite is considered felony assault and battery

mating bites may be administered in a variety of settings. a traditional practice between omegas and their alpha or beta mates is to exchange bites during their first heat after the pair has agreed to mate. some cultures practice ‘claiming ceremonies,’ where the mated pair exchanges bites in front of their families and friends, community leaders, and/or religious leaders.

bite types

mating or claiming bites - most commonly located on or around the scent glands at the nape. historically, alphas were not marked when mating with betas or omegas, but in current society bites tend to be exchanged between mates of any sex rather than used as a tool for alphas to stake a claim on someone of a so-called ‘lower sex.’

pack or bonding bites - most commonly located on or around the scent glands at the wrist. in some more traditional or long-established packs, either the pack alpha or chief omega administers pack bites to new members. popular culture treats this practice as old-fashioned, with some young people referring to it as a ‘boomer bite.’ in younger or more progressive packs, any member may extend the bite to an unmarked pack mate.

camaraderie bites, also called ‘bestie bites’ - may be located anywhere on the body. a more recent practice, only from the last 60 years or so, stemming from the free love movement and sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s. these bites are exchanged between close friends, but are not typically an expectation. to share a camaraderie bite with a friend is a mark of profound intimacy. in many young adult novels, a life changing experience shared between friends is punctuated by the exchange of camaraderie bites. some groups have expressed displeasure with this trend, as they feel it cheapens the significance of the camaraderie bite.

mated pairs report increased happiness in their relationship, though causality between the bite’s presence and relationship satisfaction is unclear.

bite-bonded packs demonstrate a similar phenomenon with similarly unclear causality

friends who exchange camaraderie bites tend to report a stronger sense of connection, satisfaction, and contentment in all of their friendships, not just the bite-bonded one.

individuals in healthy bite-bonded relationships of any type report a stronger sense of self and belonging, which is associated with positive health outcomes, job satisfaction, and overall happiness

bite-bonded married couples and unmarried couples with registered mating bites receive the same social and legal privileges

global acceptance for same sex (i.e. a-a and o-o) mates is increasing rapidly, with legal recognition for these mating arrangements in over 85% of countries

Love and Redemption - Details and Motifs

There are a lot of details in Love and Redemption that you overlook and dismiss when it’s first introduced. But you soon realize that the details take on deeper meanings as the plot progresses and the truth is exposed.

The first detail is Si Feng’s eye mole. In episode 2, Xuan Ji points to his mole and asks him if it’s because he really likes to cry. 

At first, I thought it was because the actor Cheng Yi had a mole, so they decided to write it in as a joke. But it turns out that the mole is an intentional plot point and that it’s actually a leftover blood mark that Xuan Ji gave him in his past lives. We don’t learn about the truth of this detail until episode 27 or so when all the past lives are revealed. 

Si Feng’s morning tea:

Si Feng likes his tea prepared in a specific way (三清茶) as we’re shown in episode 1. We completely forget about his preferred tea drinking habits until episode 51 when Xuan Ji prepares it in order to try to win him back. 

Si Feng’s “Little Phoenix” nickname:

It’s not until episode 37 when we finally see Si Feng reveal his true demon form, which resembles a phoenix. It then all made sense why brother Liu kept calling Si Feng little phoenix earlier in the drama. 

Xuan Ji’s favourite colour, blue:

Xuan Ji announces that blue is her favourite colour when she asks Si Feng what the colour of the flower that Ming yan gave her is. 

In the cave they were in, it was raining blue hydrangea petals (八仙花), and she says that blue has always been her favourite colour since when she was little. 

But in episode 48, when Xuan Ji finally regains her memories of Si Feng in their past lives together, she remembers that in the heavenly realm, Si Feng (in bird form) gifted her a dress so that she could get a taste of being a normal woman. The dress was blue. 

I completely missed this detail when I first watched it. The drama seems to imply that blue is her favourite colour because of the gift Si Feng gave her back in the heavenly realm. 

Bonus, Si Feng planting blue hydrangeas outside his home, and then Xuan Ji discovering his garden after trying to find him for over a year:

Si Feng’s hairpin:

At first, the hairpin was just a regular heirloom that Si Feng’s mother passed onto him. He then gifts it to Xuan Ji later in the drama as a token of this love. A very typical, harmless romantic gesture.  

But then, the hairpin becomes a catalyst for the angst and misunderstandings to come. Aunt Hong recognizes the bird on the hairpin. It’s the same species of bird that killed Xuan Ji’s mother. 

We then learn that Si Feng and his whole sect is this bird species, and that he suspects his dad might have killed her mom. It marks the beginning of a long, angsty road ahead. So it turns out that it wasn’t a harmless hairpin after all, but it actually holds the truth to both Si Feng and Xuan Ji’s backstories. 

I just did not see any of this coming, but the drama had already introduced us to these items very early on. Chekov’s gun was already planted, but we didn’t catch the hints.

Everything is covered in pink hearts and glitter again, which can only mean one thing. 

Person A and Person B are friends and neither of them have a date for Valentine’s Day, so they decide to order takeout of some kind and watch a movie together. At some point, hidden feelings are revealed.

Person A has been in love with person B for years and is trying to work up the courage to ask them out on Valentine’s Day.
