What Spring Does with the Cherry Trees
Part Five / Read on ao3
If he thinks she hasn’t noticed when he doesn’t turn the page for ages he’s wrong. And if he’s not actually reading then what the hell is he doing? He should just watch the movie!
It’s clear he’s doing all this to irritate her and it’s not working.
“You don’t have to sit out here while you read,” Beth blurts out. Aimed right at him. Tired of the impasse. This little unbothered act he’s putting on.
Rio pouts his bottom lip like he disagrees, doesn’t look away from his book. “Bein’ social.”
“But if the movie’s distracting you—”
“It ain’t.”
“You haven’t turned the page in like five minutes.”
“You timin’ me?”
“No,” Beth huffs, frowning.
“Cause you got previous.”
That sets her on edge. The way his tone changes as he says it. The burst of memories he purposefully digs up between them.
“I’m not.”
“Then relax,” he drawls.
“I’m perfectly relaxed,” Beth grits out. Crossing her arms and dropping back in to the couch cushion, hadn’t realized she’d been straining forward.
“Seems like it,” Rio smirks.

im still processing the fact he gently stopped her at his belt and then was like no you and then the shot of him stroking up her leg while his face is curved in towards hers and she’s just watching him all dazed but they don’t kiss and then he gently pulls her leg out and up and then the fact that Beth SMILED next to his ear f u c k kk kkkkk

"Oh, God."
Elizabeth groans, peering into the small cabin while she props the door open with her foot.
"What? You see a spider or something?"
Rio tries to peek over her shoulder into the room. The wooden door creaks when she pushes it.
"There's only one bed in here."
He steps around her to observe the space. There's a couch on the far end facing a tiny T.V., a dresser, and one, queen-sized bed. His throat gets tight.
"I'm sure there's been a mistake. Your mom probably didn't look at the interior pictures online."
Elizabeth says, refusing to meet his eyes and setting her backpack on the bed. Rio can hear the slight anxiety in her voice, so he offers to sleep on the couch.
"No, I'd feel bad. It's way too small for those bean stalks."
She smiles at him and pointedly glances down at his exposed knees. He wouldn't be wearing shorts if it wasn't 101 degrees outside.
"Stop lookin' at 'em."
"I can't help it! I've known you for 8 years and I've only see your legs like, three times!"
Elizabeth giggles, and Rio's face feels hot. His scrawny legs are probably his biggest insecurity. Not that he has many, but it's hard not to be self-conscious when the objectively hottest girl he knows points out his knobby ass knees every time she sees them.
"I don't know why you care so much. You have nice legs."
Her back is turned as she unpacks her clothes and walks them to the dresser, so she doesn't catch the way his ears get red. Or the way he can't help but look at her legs now, freckled and smooth and slightly pink from the sun. He wants to run his mouth along the freckles that dot the length of her calf, disappearing beneath her tight-
"You can shower first, if you want."
She offers in that high, sweet voice of hers. He plops his own bag on the couch and pulls out the towel he brought, a clean pair of underwear, and a t-shirt. When he glances back at Elizabeth- now perched on the bed with her attention on her phone, bare skin practically glowing in the lamplight- he grabs a pair of shorts, too. Any extra barriers between his groin and her body is definitely necessary. He heads towards the bathroom with quick steps.
Under the hot water, he curses his body for reacting to Elizabeth the way it does by merely a scandalous thought. His family vacation is hardly the time or place he wanted to tell her about his feelings for her. He does want to tell her, eventually. But, spending the majority of the day babysitting his brothers while his mother tends to his baby sister lacks the romance he had hoped for. Figures he won't be able to hold out much longer, though. 'Specially after seeing her splashing around in the lake with Marcus and Nicholas, grinning all big and squealing like a kid.
"Rio? Are you almost done?"
He turns off the shower and wraps his towel 'round his waist, deciding he wants her to see him. Hopes his eyes weren't lying when he caught hers lingering on his abs earlier today. A bit of teasing never hurt anyone. He gathers his clothes under his arm.
"All yours, ma."
Rio grins lopsidedly at her when he swings open the door. Her eyes widen and dart, quick as hell, down his body and back up again. She clears her throat in a way he's sure she thinks is nonchalant and slides past him into the bathroom.
The quiet of the room washes over him when the lock clicks behind her and he swallows. His mind tortures him with how she might look when she emerges. Scrubbed clean and smelling of grapefruit like she always does. He gets dressed and lays down, staring at the ceiling and feeling anxious as all hell. When the door opens again- could be ten minutes later, could be twenty- he can't stop himself from sitting up a little. She has on a silky purple pair of pajamas and her cheeks are ruddy from the heat. Her blue eyes pierce through him from the doorway. His heart hammers in his chest at the sight of her.
"Good thing you showered first. I think I used up all the hot water trying to wash the lake off of me."
She gives him a small smile while approaching the bed, stopping to lay her dirty clothes in a folded pile by the night stand. When she's standing upright again, her gaze meets his.
"You don't snore, do you?"
Rio laughs lightly at that and shakes his head. He doesn't trust his voice not to crack. He thinks she might feel the tension too; she tends to talk a lot when she's nervous. His hand moves of its own accord, pulling the sheet beside him back for her. She doesn't say a word now. Elizabeth slips her legs under the sheet and lies down on her back with her hands folded on her chest. He just stares at her, frozen with no more then four inches between their bodies. After a few moments pass of nothing but shallow breaths, their eyes meet and neither can suppress a nervous giggle.
"This is pretty weird, right?"
She punctuates the question with an awkward laugh, but there's something hesitant in her tone; like maybe she doesn't really think that. And he wants her to latch on to that feeling. The idea that sharing a bed with him might not be weird; that it might actually be right. He reaches over to switch off the light, then shuffles an inch or so closer and turns on his side, really looking at her now.
"Nah, I don't think so."
He whispers in the dark. A part of him too scared to confess it with the lights on. Her eyes still glow somehow, so he sees when she shifts to face him. Her lids are heavy but she breaks the silence once more with a confession of her own.
"Me either."
Though barely audible, her voice sounds like thunder in his ears. A smile breaks his lips and hope swells inside of him. He wants to dig more. Wonders if she's thought about sleeping beside him before, like he has. Wants to ask if she dreams about him, like he does. But just when he opens his mouth to speak, he sees her eyes close.
"Goodnight, Rio."
His name leaves her lips and her fingers skim his, finding a home beneath his palm. Her hand under his is his new favorite thing. With a deep breath that almost hurts, he shuts his own eyes. His mind whirs with plans of how he'll tell her tomorrow. On the dock, maybe. The wind always ruffles her hair in the prettiest way. He'll tell her how he's been pining for her, that he wants her to be his girl. That he doesn't think he'll ever want anyone else the same way.
"Goodnight, Elizabeth."
Tomorrow.
