Hey when I search "hamster" on reddit the top things coming up are:
-"what's your craziest hamster death story?"
-Picture of old hamster "I've never seen a hamster die of old age. That's crazy"
-r/hamsterdeaths
I feel like the joker for real. The shared experience around literally killing your pet hamster should be enough for people to realize that they are very difficult pets to properly take care of and NOT for children.
Imagine if you looked up your favorite animal the dog and all the results were about how funny it is that everyone maims and neglects their puppies.
People call me over sensitive when I say that Hamsters Deserve Better but when I tell people that my favorite animal is a hamster they will tell me how they killed one. They do this most of the time.
Please refrain from sharing stories about how a hamster or other small animal you knew died on this post.
This is not a confessional, I don't want to hear about it and I thought I made that clear.
No, seriously. Everyone who owns a small pet can tell you: when someone asks us what pets we have, we *brace ourselves* for these stories before we even say “I have a bird” or “I have a guinea pig.” For me it’s over 50% of the time, the response is “oh I had one too, it died in a horrific way!” And then they tell you said horrific story without pausing to think of your feelings.
I am NOT exaggerating. I try not to tell people that I have cockatiels unless they ask because it happens so often. How do people think this is the best way to make conversation about a pet? Oh we’ve got something in common, but mine is a tragedy, so I’m sure you’d love to hear about it since you love this type of animal! It just shows you how our society treats these pets as disposable and not like the incredible creatures they are.
It’s Ziggy’s Gotcha Day! We got him 14 years ago (if you can believe that!!) and he’s now 20 years old. Wish this old man happy birthday!
All is good again, no more upside down eggs
Reya committed Egg Crimes this weekend. She’s okay now and should be back to full health soon but had an emergency situation! More below the break but TW for pet emergencies and egg binding.
I took Reya to the ER vet after she laid another egg and had a small prolapse. They hospitalized her because they suspected another egg was coming and did an X-ray. Turns out that egg was breech, it was backwards with the big end coming first and slightly sideways.
She would not have been able to pass it. So they did an emergency surgery and manually removed the egg, which was completely successful! They also did another hormone implant.
She’s home now and resting and eating lots of snacc. She’s a tough cookie and the vets kept commenting on how adorably sassy and opinionated she is.
A sassy Pearl Queen
I found this on my phone lol
