try it tuesday! i found this recipe for spaghetti squash and my fears of this faux-pa(sta)-fall-veggie were quickly pushed aside. i've always been intimated by it, but the hardest part was having the right knife (and strength) to saw through it. also, having the patience to wait an hour for it to soften in the oven (note: i learned after the fact you can nuke it in the microwave for 10-12 minutes). once it's cooked, use a fork to scrape out spaghetti squash strand deliciousness! this recipe calls for kale, chickpeas, sun dried tomatoes, lemon, garlic (my favorite ingredient), salt and pepper (and a nice glass of red to accompany it)
happy munching!
spiked cider and caramel apples
happy hallows' eve! well technically, hallows' eve-eve, but i couldn't wait to post this crunchy-caramely recipe just in time for halloween. i spotted it last week on refinery29, made it for a friends birthday, and couldn't get enough (never knew how easy these kinds of things were to whip up!) you literally throw butter, brown sugar, honey, water, salt and baking soda into a pan, melt it, pour it top of popcorn and pecans, place it in the oven, and voila! so round two is crisping away for a drinks and treats party tomorrow night while the rain falls and i get in my holiday groove. hope everyone is having a spook-filled-festive-week! (that frenchie above was snapped at a costume pet parade! i'm obsessed)
my blogging has been on hold largely due to a move across the country, a new job, a new home, a new city (hello, boston!). it's been a whirlwind but i'm ready to get back to it. so, here are the latest highlights so far.
first things first, i had never been to boston before moving out from la and had ZERO clue what to expect. i have to say, this city has proved itself to be a diamond in the rough (okay, but i won't be caught dead saying the word wicked and will probably never get used to the accents, but you win some you lose some). that part aside, i love everything it has to offer. the people are amazing. the food is great. the history has made me smarter.
i found the cutest studio on the cutest street in beacon hill that i love coming home to (that sunset is on my walk home one night, unreal!) it's good to be back in a city with seasons. i've missed fall and the golden leaves make me so happy.
my new job (thanks, mullen!) has introduced me to a few gems in this city - one being union square donuts - and oh.my.god. they're the best, most fluffy, mouthwatering fried balls of dough i've ever sank my teeth into. if you're ever in the area, check 'em out. the second is a local, organic brewery, peak organic beer, who came in to do a tasting a couple weeks back. every single one was amazing. they have a maple port that's made with maine-grown organic oats and vermont-produced organic maple syrup. let me repeat that vermont-produced organic maple syrup. um, are you drooling yet? i had to find where they were sold and immediately purchased. (side note, before moving out here i was not the slightest bit of a beer girl, but times have changed and here i am blogging about beer). the other beer i can't get enough of living out here is harpoon. their brewery is right on the water and they make the best pretzels with the best sauces to dip them in.
moving on from beer to the city's oldest residential community, the north end. it's one of my favorite places to wander around (when there is not some sort of festival going on. abort, abort!). the architecture and local italians sitting outside espresso shops bring me into another world. they also have the best charcuterie shops. a friend pointed one out to me that was tucked back into an alley and i felt like i stepped straight into italy, seriously. i was planning on making pizza for dinner, so got to pick up a few of the closest-you-get-get-to-italian-ingredients without a passport. the mozzarella was the most flavorful, soft, delicious cheese. i also got sweet and spicy sopressata and marinated artichokes (dreaming of it all right now).
finally, oystaaahhhs. no boston post would be complete without it (or maybe the red sox, but i missed that so next year, maybe).
i've been cooking a ton and will share some of those recipes next.
have a great weekend!
this weekend, i took a trip up to the malibu canyons and went on a wine tasting safari. this guy was my favorite (at Malibu Wine Safaris)

“…with enthusiasm you find you don’t have to do it all yourself. sustained enthusiasm brings into existence a wave of creative energy and all you have to do then is ride the wave.”
great interview from luis miranda, strategy and innovation director at grupo gallegos. he quotes eckhart tolle above in what kind of people he looks to surround himself with. lots of smart thoughts on the industry, technology and what it takes to be a great planner. worth a read:

perfect place to spend a sunday (at International Garden Center)
But how quickly the digital age turned into the age of technological anxiety, with our beloved devices becoming something to fear, not enjoy. What sex was for the Puritans, technology has become for us. We’ve focussed our collective anxiety on digital excess, and reconnecting with the “real” world around us represents one effort to control it.
And yet the “real” world, like the “real” America, is an insidious idea. It suggests that the selves we are online aren’t authentic, and that the relationships that we forge in digital spaces aren’t meaningful. This is odd, because some of our closest friends and most significant professional connections are people we’ve only ever met on the Internet, and a third of recently married couples met online. It’s odder still because we not only love and socialize online but live and work there, too. Is it any less real when we fall in love and break up over Gchat than when we get fired over e-mail and then find a new job on LinkedIn?
