To everyone who’s gonna be in the heatwave, please be safe! Make sure to drink lots of water and sports drinks. You don’t realize how much the heat takes from you until it’s too late. Especially in humidity.
Anyway, if you’re from an area that doesn’t normally get fucking hot, most of my tips for staying cool (as someone who lives in a semi-desert where it gets to 100F at least once a year):
1) Stay on the lower levels of your home, if able. Have a basement? Even better. The ground is great at being a natural coolant. If you’re in an apartment, my condolences try and stay lower to the ground. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do
2) stay away from windows, and keep them covered. Don’t let the sun in. Durning the hottest part of the day, close the windows and doors. Why are they open? You ask. Well
3) if you can get a cross breeze going, awesome. Open the door or window at one end of the house and another at the other end. The idea is to let natural airflow act as ac. This only really works if the air is moving tho, you’re shit out of luck if the air is still
4) if it’s cooler outside than it is inside, especially at night, open the windows.
(Note: tips 3 and 4 apply best for if you don’t have AC)
5) Drink water
6) Back of your neck, back of your knees, and over your heart is where a lot of blood is flowing and you’re naturally warm. If you need to cool off quickly, get a cloth just drenched in ice water and lay it over one of those spots, if not all of them
7) shade is your best friend
8) learn from my mistakes, don’t run your PC in an enclosed space. That thing is like a space heater in the summer. It’s a cursed item (also, it becomes easier to over heat your ac)
9) eat fruits and veggies like watermelon and cucumber. They have a high water content, so they stay cooler on their own
10) don’t cook/keep the cooking to a minimum. Salads and ready made meals are your friends. Kitchens really heat up a space
Anyway, that’s all I can remember/think of for now. I know a lot of you in the South already have the infrastructure for heat, but there’s other parts that don’t, like Europe. So let’s do our best to have empathy and lookout of eachother
When you see me posting about the hagiography of early & medieval saints in Christianity and Christian apocrypha, it is important to note I am agnostic. I was not raised Catholic. I am not examining this through a religious lens or a lens of historical veracity. Do I think Saint Agatha survived having her breast torn off after rejecting a Roman prefect and was prevented from being burnt at the stake by an act of God? Probably not (I was not there so there is always the remote possibility some variation of this event occurred), I’m more interested in the cultural impact of her martyrdom and all of the depictions of the poor girl triumphantly holding a platter with her amputated breast. I’m more interested in the kernels of mythology and kernels of truth in the hagiographies of saints and how they represent common social problems of the time which are often relevant today.
Every time I make a post speaking negatively about the present GOP or insinuate that the Democratic Party might be the lesser of the two evils we are forced to decide between, immediately someone shows up to say ‘both sides bad though’. Like. Okay. And? And what are you going to do about it? Refuse to participate in democracy just because you’re waiting for the revolution? Let them both do whatever? I got so much shit during the election when I was trying to encourage people to vote for Kamala and look where we are now. Honestly? I will always choose the lesser of two evils and let there be blood on my hands instead of standing back and allowing evil to take its course. I’ve made a choice, not a permanent one, less of an endorsement of the Democratic Party and more of an acknowledgment of the fascist Christian nationalist views of the current GOP. Both sides bad, both sides similar, the left in America is more like the center right in a lot of other countries, I’m aware of this, it is important to attempt to minimize harm until the problem can be solved.
You know what. There ARE less animals around than there used to be. Like. Less than five years ago there were dozens of herons in the rivers by the train tracks. There were wild hogs and deer in the nearby forest. When you were out late in summer you could see hares and owls. I have several fond memories of staying out at night in my late teens and seeing swarms of fireflies. There were frogs, salamanders, occasional lizards if you were lucky. There were so many fucking foxes. And like... I've gone on several evening/night walks in the woods this summer and I haven't seen a single firefly, or heard the call of an owl. There's no hares, no foxes. I haven't seen a fieldfare or a nightingale in years. Biodiversity is dying out completely.
i get why people don't believe in marriage as a social construct but legally it is the best and easiest way to say "this is who i trust to take care of me when i can't take care of myself" and i'm so glad gay people fought for that right bc when shit gets scary at least i know im in good hands
I am locked and loaded for multiple rants at any given moment. How informative they are vs how much it’s me frustrated at other people all depends on the topic. Bring one up and there will be no interjecting until I am done
