Aroi Thai and Japanese Restaurant Replacing Takoma Bistro
News that Takoma Bistro in Takoma Park was closing was surely giving some anxiety. Where would one go for brunch when Republic is too expensive (side note: totally worth the splurge, but sometimes you just need a quick cheap bite) and Mark's Kitchen was too crowded.
Unfortunately, Takoma Bistro's replacement won't solve that dilema. However, fortunately, according to Main Street Takoma the space will be taken over by the purveyors of Aroi Thai and Japanese Restaurant.
Hopefully, they will add a delivery option to the Takoma and North Brightwood area which, other than the newly opened Salt and Pepper Grill III on Georgia and Missouri Avenues, seems to lack good delivery.
It sounds like a great substitution.
Salt and Pepper Grill Coming to Brightwood
From Popville, Salt and Pepper Grill, the delicious Indian and Pakistani Restaurant that started out near Howard University is opening its third iteration in Brightwood, just south of the Walmart. Salt and Pepper Grill III will open in the former Chocolate Crust space that closed down last month.
You can find the menu here.
Hopefully they will deliver with a fairly far radius. With their great vegetarian menu, I have no doubt that they will find enthusiastic customers both in the immediate area and in Takoma and Takoma Park.
Takoma Central now renting units
Via Washingtonpost.com: Takoma Central, the new development still under construction near the Takoma Metro Station, is now looking to get some renters before it opens.
This is the same development where the new Busboys and Poets location will be.
Information on the amenities and units available here.
What do you think about the prices/floor plans?
HR-57 moving to somewhere in NW DC... Takoma would be a great bet
According to POPville via Frozen Topics, HR-57 the jazz club always on the move is set to move from it's H St. NE space into a large space in NW DC...
Well I could think of a few places in Takoma that would be perfect!

I guess we'll have to wait an see.
What a crazy rain storm this afternoon!
Metro adding more stretchy buses to Georgia Ave and 16th St. Lines
Metro will begin to add more stretchy (articulated) buses on the Georgia Ave. 70 bus route and on the 16th St. bus lines.
"On the 70 route along Georgia Avenue, the number of trips using articulated buses will nearly double -- from 89 today to 172 starting August 25. The longer buses will operate throughout the day, with approximately 5 more trips running with longer buses each hour from 4 a.m. until 10 p.m."
More information from Metro.
Stretchy buses!
GSA considering Walter Reed site for new FBI headquarters
The Washington Post reports that the GSA is considering a portion of the Walter Reed complex to house the FBI's new headquarters:
"Two sources said the GSA is considering the Armed Forces Retirement Home off of North Capitol Street as a possible FBI headquarters site; one said the GSA is considering the eastern portion of the former Walter Reed Army hospital, which is still owned by the federal government but subject to an extensive planning effort by the D.C. government."
According to the Post, the final location for the FBI headquarters must be able to house a 2.1 million-square-foot campus within two-and-a-half miles of the Beltway and two miles of a Metro station. Both of which are satisfied by the Walter Reed complex site. The headquarter also will require a 350 ft. security setback zone.
If the Walter Reed site were to be selected, it would certainly eat up most of the site which is 66.57 acres (2,899,790 sq ft.). The security perimeter would most certainly dampen the possibility of a livable walkable space envisioned by the Walter Reed development plan.

Sitea Tea Shop on 4th Street in Takoma DC is a nice little spot with some delicious Iced Chai. They do tea service and vegan bites as well if you have some time to sit down. All in all, a great way to beat the heat.
Takoma Foundation's Beer Fest is on September 20
From the Takoma Foundation Facebook Page: "Beerfest is coming! September 20, 2014. Save the date, and ideally, the day after. Presale starts in just a few weeks..."
I'm excited to see what local breweries particpate.
Anyone know the name of this park? The park is north of Coolidge High and west of the Takoma Rec center.
Photos from the Takoma 4th of July Parade. Happy birthday America! Takoma Park's 4th of July celebration begins at 7pm tonight with a concert followed by fireworks at 9:30pm at the Takoma Park Middle School (7611 Piney Branch Road). More info at: www.takomapark4th.org

Bike Trail of the Week Vo. 2
This week's bike trail spans DC and MD. The Rock Creek Bike trail starts all the way down at the Potomac River near Georgetown and winds its way through Rock Creek Park, onto Beach Drive and then up into Maryland over the beltway, ending at Lake Frank or Lake Needlewood.
Some notes: Parts of Beach Drive are closed on Saturdays, which makes most of this trail car free. The DC portion of the trail isn't superbly well kept and has some sharp turns and bumps.
The Maryland portion can be confusing at times navigating parts that go through neighborhoods, playgrounds and on roads, so bring a smartphone with a maps app.
Also, make sure to stock up on water/snacks, this is a long trail and if you're not prepared, you may be tempted to ditch on the way back to find a metro.

Update: Kennedy Street Selected as Playscape Location
From the Kennedy Street Development Association:
"We’re happy to officially announce that Kennedy Street is one of the three sites across the city that will be participating in the playable art design and installation process."
The process is long and complicated, but it'll be installed eventually at the green space on the corner of 5th and Kennedy.
Also from KSDA:
Congrats to Brightwood Park and Kennedy Street.
Kennedy Street Selected as Playable Art Finalist
From the Kennedy Street Development Association:
"Kennedy Street is one of three city-wide winners of the Playable Art DC competition! We're excited to move into the next stage of the process, which is gathering community feedback on what this new community art installation should look like/be. And we'll be starting this weekend at the Kennedy Street Sidewalk Festival - so stay tuned for more details later today!"
More information about the playable art project can be found here.
"Playable Art DC is an international design competition developed by the District of Columbia’s Office of Planning and made possible by the generous funding of ArtPlace America.
The competition will search for talented artists, architects, industrial designers and other designers to create innovative and exciting play structures for the nation’s capital. The intention is to bring more creativity to the world of Washington’s children and thus stimulate their appreciation and understanding of art while they do what they do best: play."

I hope it ends up looking something like this from the Playable Art gallery:
