Professional Practice (Month 12)
After taking and overcoming the challenges of this month’s course, Professional Practice, the lessons learned from the assignments helped complete this program’s final teachings. Learning how to maintain high ethics and professionalism as a successful media designer was extremely helpful. Also, creating a visual experience map assisted in recapping the lessons and growth on my personal academics throughout these past twelve months. The three main takeaways from this course were maintaining ethics, creating design that is not misleading, and demonstrating growth from the resources of this program.
“A professional designer adheres to principles of integrity that demonstrate respect for the profession, for colleagues, for clients, for audiences or consumers, and for society as a whole” (AIGA, 2009). The first takeaway is to maintain professionalism as a media designer through ethics. Maintaining strong ethics is key to having a successful career in media design with longevity. Allowing integrity to remain for all of the stakeholders involving the design process should be kept in mind in order for the design to be developed at the highest ethical standard. The second takeaway is to develop design that is not misleading. “It would be impossible to be ethical without being truthful, and we have an obligation, as advertising practitioners, to know and follow government and industry self-regulatory standards” (Snyder, 2011). Developing design that is not misleading will allow design to be created with good conscious. This takeaway clearly goes hand in hand with the first takeaway.
Finally, the third and last takeaway was the demonstration of my personal growth from this program. The big project in this last course was to develop and experience map which screenshots can be found in the last post. The experience map allowed time for me to reflect on the growth I have gained from taking this program. From the technical skills to the graduate level research, I have a much greater respect for the media designer as a whole. The design research, the design process, the design revisions while practicing professionalism and ethics is the main growth from taking this program at Full Sail University. I will take all of the lessons and knowledge and directly apply it to my future career as a media designer.
