Currently using this 2020 illo of mine as reference for a new project. Today, Election Day, feels like a good time to repost it.
After what seems like years looking for a sketchbook app that syncs across devices and keeps things simple so I can focus 100%, I settled on one. Surprised myself when I realized that @microsoft OneNote is absolutely crushing it for me!!! It's simple. It syncs across devices and platforms immediately. Infinite scrolling and expandable "canvases". Super powerful if I want to bring in reference images and links. And long form notes on the sketches can be written in...or typed! It's perfect for me. I have a tendency to rush sketches and start trying techniques before the sketch is fully realized. This app keeps things simple and keeping the focus on roughs is awesome.
I think I’m making my Tumblr comeback! Hi!
Out in the Real World
Exciting seeing books I illustrated out in the real world! Three of these wonderful titles are mine! I'm in good company. Bharat Babies is crushin' it!
Hey Monster, loosen up!
I have a tendency to overthink things . . . to look too closely and be overly critical of my own work. Last night i was reminded of a very valuable lesson. Sometimes, you gotta let the (Cintiq) pen do the thinking. I was on the phone with my parents and doodling in Photoshop. (I can never do just one thing at time . . . terrible habit, I know.) When I hung up, I realized I’d just polished off a quick illustration . . . one that I truly love. How did I get there? I turned of my illustration production engines and just let the creativity happen. I stopped worrying about “the right shape” and “does this jive with my other work?” and “would a different brush be better?” I love this little monster. And he came so naturally to me. In fact, he’s inspired a very special project I already have in the works.
Wet and Wild!
Embarking on a journey of wet edges, unpredictable opacity and some super-swell color mixing. I’m leaping headfirst into watercolor . . . in photoshop, of course. (Maybe one of these days I’ll muster the courage to tackle to true medium. Ya know, with water and color and all.)
I’m feelin’ it!
Happy Grilled Cheese Day
Social media told me that today is National Grilled Cheese Day!
Whale Love
A few weeks ago, I took myself on a little creative retreat. (Blog post to come about that!) I promised myself some drawing time. No deadline, no planning, no client in mind. 100% a pencil and me (...and an iPad). So many amazing artful moments came out of that weekend. But, the character development of this romantic little guy is chief among them. I love him. Keep an eye out. There’s more of him to come.
Album Cover Crush
I can’t take it! It’s really a perfect, perfect thing. Once I got over the initial shock that The Pet Shop Boys were brining us something awesome, I realized the awesomeness didn’t stop with the music. This album cover is . . . SUPER! (sorry about that.)
Hangin’ Out.
One of my favorite little moments form Who Lives in a Cave? for Cantata Learning.
Marching Ants!
Getting started on the early sketches for my next illustration project with Cantata Learning!
Up the water spout!
So, this is fun! A book I recently art directed and illustrated for Cantata Learning has been animated for this adorable video featuring Education Maven, Shannon McClintock Miller!
Sketchy
In relaunching my website this past couple of weeks, one of my favorite things to do has been scanning and cataloging sketches from past and current projects. It’s fun to remember the early steps of project. But also, it’s comforting in this digital age (which I love) to know that traditional pencil sketches are part of the process.
Here are a few of my favorite sketches for work-in-progress Cantata Title that I’m illustrating. For the rest of the sketches, check ‘em out at my site.
Loaf of Bread...
Somebody posted this on Facebook today and a million and a half memories flooded back! I loved this so much as a kid. And now, seeing it again, i realized that I could never have a appreciated the art style as much as I do right now. It’s GORGEOUS!!!
Hooray! What’s this?
So, I’m here at my desk working on my website. I went scrounging for a particular illustration to be spot art on a page. Sifting through files, I came across this. Now, this year I’ve been in a moment of creating...creating as much art as I can. It’s been about development of style (and it’s also very satisfying and therapeutic to just draw, draw, draw). But, did I really create so much art this year that i’m forgetting what I drew! I VAGUELY remember making this little piece. No matter . . . I love it. Is that ok to say about my own illustration?
Nostalgia
This morning an image of a lion popped into my head. It took me a while, but I remembered where I’d him before. Quick Google image search. Yup. That’s him! This cover is one of the things that brings me back to my child in a flash. I had a stack of Golden Books as a kid. But I think this was one of my favorites. Sigh...vintage children’s book art! Is there anything better?
