Suite for Two Violas
~Timothy Reinholz
I. You Can't Dance to This
II. Is This the Middle?
III. It's Definitely Not Raining
IV. Nothing to do With Mountains
Marissa Reinholz, viola
This piece began as part of my college audition portfolio. Nothing to do with Mountains is very simple; in it, I established material which is used for all of the movements I have since developed. Performers are allowed to choose the order in which the movements are performed. The movement It's Definitely Not Raining is by far the most heavily textured movement. Parts of this movement will utilize a guitar pick and parts of the instrument bowed in unusual places. All these sounds add to the ominous inversion of a minor-major 7 chord. Similar material from Nothing to do with Mountains is used in this movement . You Can't Dance to This is so titled because it would be rather difficult to dance to this overly ADHD movement. The variations overlap and interrupt each other at unexpected times. Finally, Is This the Middle? is a brief sample of segments of each movement which acts more like an interlude. Enjoy my Duet!
