my thoughts on gelboys2 trailer: this couldnt be a new show?!?!?
the concept of having sons involved is really taking me down, and it honestly feels so detached from the first season (along with the new director, extremely ipytm but with MUCH less connecting thread) that im just genuinely confused. i almost think gelboys2 wouldve worked better as an anthology à la hormones.
idk its not shade bc i love these characters and im excited to see them,, but it feels kinda random. in ways i can understand this arc, the unreality of social media got turned up 100 and became camp meta-commentary, complete with timeline shenanigans, but in others. im just a bit confused!
still excited and still have a lot of hope for the season actually, i like that it isnt fluff to appease an audience, so i remain Very Cautiously optimistic.
sometimes i think about how mudeok/yeong literally did not have fight scenes at all, while every man in that show got to pull out a sword at any minor inconvenience... how you a fake xianxia and contorting your narrative so that your fml is forced into damsel territory
on a small break at work and my dash is dead so imma drop some thoughts on p'aof's shows under the cut so i won't be sniped out of the fandom
i think i realized why p’aof’s works don’t quite work on me anymore, and i think it’s because there’s a certain level of..'compliance' to them that i’ve started to question
when i watched bad buddy for the first time, i thought the line 'we can’t change the world, but the world can’t change us either' was incredibly powerful. but now i keep wondering why all of p’aof’s characters seem so fundamentally helpless against society. they don’t challenge the structures that hurt them, they adapt to them
pat and pran keep pretending to hate each other instead of confronting the absurdity of their families’ feud. tian has to leave and study abroad. day has to regain his sight, and mork has to find a more ‘respectable’ job before they can have their happy ending. tanrak still has to hold onto his faith. over and over, the resolution isn’t that society changes or becomes more accepting, it’s that the characters figure out how to fit themselves into it
it’s like the underlying message is: you can be queer, but only if you find a place for yourself within the existing system. you can survive it, negotiate with it, make compromises with it, but you can’t imagine changing it. the system itself is treated as immovable, almost natural. what stands out to me even more is that the system itself is rarely held accountable for the harm it causes. the families, institutions, economic realities, or social expectations that create the conflict are usually presented as facts of life rather than things that deserve scrutiny or criticism. the emotional work of resolving that harm falls almost entirely on the characters themselves. they have to forgive, mature, compromise, move away, become more employable, become more resilient. the burden of adaptation almost always belongs to the people who were hurt
and i think that’s what doesn’t resonate with me anymore. i used to read those endings as hopeful because they insisted that love could endure despite the world, which is great and all, but now they feel almost defeatist. the characters win by accommodating the world, not by transforming it. even when they refuse to let society define who they are, they still end up reorganizing their lives around society’s limits
maybe that’s intentional. maybe p’aof is interested in telling stories about survival rather than resistance, and there’s value in that. maybe his worldview is that the world is difficult, institutions are bigger than individuals, and maturity means learning how to preserve your capacity to love within those constraints, which don't get me wrong..it's still pretty revolutionary. but i think i’ve reached a point where im more interested in stories that ask ‘why should the characters be the ones doing all the adapting?’ instead of accepting that the world simply cannot be changed

GOD SEES YOU ALWAYS
obsessed with tanraks bathroom scene mimicking both a confession booth and a prison. it's the place he's gone to release his sins so he can be "good" again, but by letting the desires out he's trapped himself in a cell of shame thats going to leave him feeling isolated from the society around him. its the biggest Punishment in an episode full of them, and its one he gives himself by Indulging.
barth real as fuck because sometimes the only way to get through life without hating yourself is a homoerotic relationship where you can kinda tell whats happening but it feels safe because you think the other person will never acknowledge it. he is wrong about the last part, but i appreciate the representation <3
the level of silly barth and tanrak are at when theyre together is so heartbreaking unfortunately. sometimes the worst thing that can happen to sad teenagers is realizing the misery doesnt have to be their life! there are other options and that makes things a lot more complicated!
the queer religious child experience of seeing ur misery reflected in someone else and immediately Becoming One With Them
sometimes oomfs will put gifs of a kbl on the tl and i jump bc its a nugu flop i stanned in 2021
anyone else watching love beyond dreams or is it just me and 3 other gay people on tumblr
One of the most striking parts of ticket to heavens first episode is Barths surprise at being remembered by the Father. Not only has it been 20 years, but one of the most grounding and sad parts of schooling —and life after it— is the realization that for many of the adults, mentors and teachers that had such an impact on you, whether positive or negative, won't remember you the way you do them. Theres just so many kids. Its reflective of Barths character that he can't imagine being remembered, moreso when we see what a wild card at the school he was right from the beginning.
This is more meta but it also lends the Father an unreal quality from the outset, past the obvious father figure presentation and lending him a distinct holiness. He remembers all his boys, he can recall not just names but personality, and the proof to back it up is in this simple interaction. It makes Tanrak immediately more accessible, not only does he want to see his parents but his model of faith is someone displaying genuine care, a figure whos guided him for years and prioritizes these kids at the centre of his teaching. It also lends an immediate sense of dread, he remembers Barth so easily, but he could never forget Tanrak. I think its really smart to have him presented this way, it's easier to stand firm in rebellion when everything is against you, it is much shakier once youve received not only care, but a purpose and vision behind denying yourself.

tbh a lot of my issues w girl rules at the end is what ive felt about a lot of gmmtv shows in the past year, too many cooks in the kitchen and an absurd amount of oversight contributed to the watering down of what couldve been a good show.
seven screenwriters on a project is one thing, but most of gmmtvs 2024/2025 lineup have felt sterile beyond measure, and a lot of it is because theyre trying really hard to appeal to GL/BL audiences First. The main market for GMMTV is teenagers and young adults, and their shows function as idol dramas. I don't think that works well with telling adult stories, which is what they tried to do here. so much of the drama ended up simplistic, as if only drummed up to create shock factor and conversation, and even with all that runtime both min and preaw felt very undercooked in a supposed ensemble, while krisbaipor were prolonged fanservice, stuff that really screams exec input. just unfortunate all around, considering how excited all the production teams and actresses seemed to be for it.
