“I wear glasses. Can I manage without glasses? Well, yes, probably. I could squint a lot, constantly move up close to anything I want to see, take the bus or a taxi if I want to go anywhere. I could just accept that I’ll never be able to see eagles flying in the sky or whales jumping out of the ocean. But why? Why try so hard to manage life when I could just put on a pair of glasses? No one would ever suggest a near-sighted person should just work harder. No one would say ‘Maybe that’s just your normal’ to someone that needs glasses. They would say ‘Let’s go to the eye doctor and get you a prescription so you’re able to see again.’ You shouldn’t have to try so hard.”

This is such a good analogy because nobody thinks about it like this. If you wear glasses, you literally need constant use of a medical aid to experience the world like most people do. If it were anything besides glasses, that would be considered a disability. But needing glasses is an extremely common, visible, and accepted form of disability to the point that we don’t even consider it one, we just accept that some people need glasses and that’s perfectly normal and there’s nothing wrong with needing to rely on them.
That is how all disabilities and illnesses should be seen, and how we should look at treatment for them. You have a problem, and you need help dealing with it, and there’s nothing wrong with either of those things. That’s perfectly normal and that’s okay.

If you want to live a memorable life, you have to be the kind of person who remembers to remember
We often talk about people with great memories as though it were some sort of an innate gift, but that is not the case. Great memories are learned. At the most basic level, we remember when we pay attention. We remember when we are deeply engaged. We remember when we are able to take a piece of information and experience, and figure out why it is meaningful to us, why it is significant, why it’s colorful, when we’re able to transform it in some way that makes sense in the light of all of the other things floating around in our minds, when we’re able to transform Bakers into bakers.
The memory palace, these memory techniques — they’re just shortcuts. In fact, they’re not even really shortcuts. They work because they make you work. They force a kind of depth of processing, a kind of mindfulness, that most of us don’t normally walk around exercising. But there actually are no shortcuts. This is how stuff is made memorable.
And I think if there’s one thing that I want to leave you with, it’s what E.P., the amnesic who couldn’t even remember he had a memory problem, left me with, which is the notion that our lives are the sum of our memories. How much are we willing to lose from our already short lives, by losing ourselves in our Blackberries, our iPhones, by not paying attention to the human being across from us who is talking with us, by being so lazy that we’re not willing to process deeply?
I learned firsthand that there are incredible memory capacities latent in all of us. But if you want to live a memorable life, you have to be the kind of person who remembers to remember.
Thank you, Joshua Foer, for changing my life.

In my religion (and most other religions) certain numbers have certain meanings. So I’m probably far behind everyone else figuring this out, but I thought it was interesting and wanted to share it with you. 4- order 8- resurrection or regeneration 15- rest 16- love 23- trust in the universe 42- creation 108- wholeness of existence I also think that it’s interesting that 4 8 15 16 23 & 42 has to be entered into the computer in the hatch and then the time resets to 108 minutes.
That’s so cool! I didn’t know this, thanks for the info. You didn’t say which religion you are talking about but I think is Christianity?

it is constantly amazing and terrifying to me the amount of propaganda that is necessary in order to sustain capitalism
I'm not saying this to sound so smart and evolved, I'm absolutely including myself in this. I am constantly in awe of how much I have had to unlearn and how much more I need to unlearn. The first time I saw someone criticizing the nuclear family model, I was completely taken aback, and now I fully recognize the ways in which this social family model perpetuates abuse, poverty, and neglect.
And the capitalist class really has us believing that the products we consume have something to say about our identity. It's fucking wild.
The United States is a country that believes that the availability of 27 different types of Oreos is somehow an indication of freedom while people starve to death on the streets and die because they can't afford a medication whose price is artificially inflated.
The idea that someone can earn (and therefore deserves) millions or billions of dollars is absolutely asinine! The myth of the "self-made millionaire" is an outright lie! And yet both are bedrocks of American culture.
It’s perfectly fine if Donald Trump struggles to walk down a ramp. Being the president of the United States isn’t a physically strenuous job, and if his physical abilities are starting to decline due to age or other factors it is not an obstacle to fulfilling his duties as president.
Black and white photo of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt sitting in a wheelchair. Fala, a black medium-sized dog, is sitting in his lap, and Ruthie Bie, a little girl with light skin who is wearing a knee-length dress, is standing to his left. He appears to be talking to Ruthie.
[End ID]
FDR was the longest serving president in US history and ran the country from a wheelchair. His disability didn’t interfere with his ability to be a leader and instead motivated him to advocate for rehabilitation services for disabled people and for developing a polio vaccine.
Donald Trump is a white supremacist, is failing to control COVID-19, uses the presidency to enrich himself and his family, and doesn’t care about ordinary people. Making fun of him for potentially having a physical disability distracts from the legitimate issues with his presidency while hurting disabled people like myself who struggle with being dehumanized and devalued. If you are acting like Trump at a campaign rally (link) you need to rethink your actions.
