I feel like Halo stories that want the Master Chief to go figure something out are starting off-kilter from the word go, because he is just. Not an investigative sort of person. He's not a good character for that. Chief is a forthright and unquestioning blockhead of a guy in most situations so saddling him with the job of uncovering and putting together information doesn't work unless you actually do something with how unsuited he is, and how vulnerable that makes him.

But it seems to me like there just hasn't been room for that? Or a lack of interest? Who can say.

There was such an open route to go from Halo 4 given the specific interaction the Cortana copies have with the Didact in that particular cinematic. As they are binding him to the hardlight bridge, you can literally see one of the copies forces the Didact forward so the last one can jump into his helmet.

Will just forever baffle me that this wasn't the explanation chosen to justify the direction—when the Didact fell into slipspace, this particular copy either remained with him and was corrupted, or (since that creative team didn't want to use the Didact going forward) this was how she entered the Domain and was "stabilised." There was a path here for them to have their cake and eat it in the surface-level presentation of things to make Evil!Cortana work!
