I know that everyone's answer for "How do I get better at _______?" Is to continue to practice said art or action. But how in the world does anyone work through all the frustration? The crushing sense of "I'll never be good at this." I have tried to write, to draw, to sing, to compose. The only dream I dream is to create something beautiful. But I just can't.
Let me put this as simply as possible:
If you heard a beautiful melody played on a violin, and you went âI want to do that. I want to make beautiful music on a violin,â you would not be surprised if, the first time you picked up a violin, you found yourself making noises that sounded like a cat was in pain.Â
So youâd learn the violin. Learn the strings, the fingering, how to bow. Youâd be proud at the point where you could play âTwinkle twinkle little starâ on it. If you stopped there and said âIâll never be good at thisâŠâ well, youâd be right. But youâd be right because you stopped, not because it is impossible to play the violin well.
And if you learned violin and got better and practiced, one day youâd be able to play beautiful music on the violin. You might never be a world-class violinist, but youâd be competent.
You are always allowed to decide itâs too hard or frustrating to carry on with anything. But, mostly, you donât get to be magically good at something, whether that something is art, medicine, law, ballet, cartography or martial arts. The writing fairy, the painting fairy, the composing fairy, will not descend in the night if you decide thatâs what you do, touch their glittering wands to your forehead, and allow you to wake in the morning with all the talents, skills, knowledge and experience you need to be really good.
Thatâs why everyoneâs answer is to practice, to do it, to learn. Itâs because the short-cuts are mostly blind alleys. Itâs because itâs work. Itâs because there really are skills to learn, and you should learn them if you want to be good, whatever it is you hope to do.
Good luck.
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
This book...I don't know why I haven't read this one before. I would see it on the shelf at Barnes and Noble and the cover intrigued me (I know I know, don't judge by its cover, but I can't help it!) and the title as well!! I have seen it on the store website and reading what I read was pulling me to it, but I never got to actually reading it....until now. I regret nothing. I am so glad to have read something so powerful as this. I literally could not put this book down until I finished. I finished reading this in one day. I'm not saying that to show how fast I read, but to hopefully get y'all to understand how much I was pulled in to this book. I did not let it out of my hands, not one second. So what's this book about? I'll tell you what it said in the description I saw online: a guy in high school finds a box of video cassettes and when he starts listening to them he hears the voice of a girl at his school, Hannah, who had committed suicide. On those cassettes she lists the thirteen reasons why she committed suicide. Honestly y'all this is a great book and highly highly HIGHLY recommend it!
In The Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken
OMG can someone say THE FEELS?! Okay so I just finished reading this book last night and OMG words cannot even describe what Ruby and I went through lol there was so much tension and anxiety and suspense and THE LOVE!! OH JEEBUS THE LOVE!! (I personally, am a sucker for love stories) there is so much love here, all kinds of love and I loved it!! So much action and the lies and truths!! It's just so ahh!! Honestly this was one of the best one yet and I am just so sad that it's over!! :'O but all in all it was something amazing :'D
Writing & Me
I hate it. I love it. I hate it because I have to do it. I love it because I do it. I hate it because I have to do it for class. I love it because I do it to feel better on my own time. When I want. What I want. However I want. Does that make sense? Lol
New year, new books! Happy new year y'all!!! đ
The Scorch Trials
If you liked the maze runner then yes, I think you'd like the scorch trials. First of all, I felt the need to keep reading and maybe you did too and I personally like to finish a series! I loved it! Lots of suspense and tension and oh the betrayal!! It gets crazy (literally) and the people Thomas gets to meet are all as strange as the first time he met the gladers, except even more dangerous... okay so before I really spoil it I recommend you read it and continue the series! Let me know if you get ahead of me if you like/dislike. Talk to me!! Lol -over & out
Those who teach and preach have lessons of their own to learn and practice
Finals are over!
Yes!! Finally the finals are over and the stress and anxiety inducing papers and required readings are done with for the next month! Woohoo! So now you will surely hear more from me! đ
Marbles
Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, & Me A Graphic Memoir by Ellen Forney Now this books is really interesting for those who want to try something different from the sci-fi fantasy genre (like myself lol). The images are big and the writing is intense. I say big and intense because to me it gave me a big eye opener. Seeing it in a whole new way, a new perspective. I want to say more but at the same time I don't because I'd rather you read this yourself and have your own feelings on this book. I highly recommend it, so have fun! ;D
Next read?
I don't know what book to read next. Any ideas?
