Soldier Hollow Golf Course - Midway, Utah
soldierhollowgolf.com
Soldier Hollow lies in a town called Midway, Utah. I call it a town, because I am not exactly sure what I was seeing. The first course we played following our flights into Salt Lake City was located on the slopes of a mountain or a hill. I am not sure which one it exactly was, because the landscape of Utah is very confusing for a visitor who has never seen anything like it. Driving to the course, there were tall cliffs that could have been part of a mountain, or just a random cliff to the top of a very large hill. Some of the hills looked like it would take you 15 minutes to run up at maximum, and others would take you a day to get up and down. Maybe an overnight trip. Bring a sleeping bag. The drive from the airport is littered with rest stops that seem legit. Buffalo wild wings and Chilis are replaced with very nice towns along the way with stores that definitely do not carry alcohol. Looks like everything is brand new, but I am not sure who the hell lives out in the middle of nowhere. There is literally just random pockets of towns and villages probably made up of 99.99% white people who don’t go to the same temple I would go to. There might be someone of foreign descent in Utah, but I sure as shit didn’t see one. This is the least diverse place in the United States of America. And for no good reason. The golf courses here are absurd and the views are outstanding.
This course was beautiful. There are two courses; the Gold and Silver. Nobody plays for Silver, we obviously played Gold. The Gold course in addition to being more difficult was the more scenic option of the two. The fairways run but not as far downhill as you would expect. The greens and tee boxes were well maintained. Fairways were in excellent condition. We played in perfect conditions in the low to mid 80s with plenty of wind, whereas the average temperature in Utah has to be well into triple digits during late July. The golf course has a great clubhouse, restaurant and driving range. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and quick with a joke.
The day started off fantastic as Rosenberg forgot to put the bucket under the ball dispenser for the driving range and made a fool of himself. Nakutis ended up winning this round as Rosenberg is absolutely unable to hit anything out of a bunker. Might as well give the man an umbrella and towel, he can’t get out of there if his life depended on it. This course was out of bounds beautiful. Mountains in the background don’t seem real. Maybe it was the high altitude, high winds, or a combination of the two but the balls flew crisp and true with a little extra pop to them. No need for driver when the the 4wood is rocking 250+ Highly recommended if your are in the Salt Lake City area and are willing to take a short drive out from the middle of nowhere to the middle of nowhere. Don’t forget when you are walking in the rocky OB area, use your club head to scare away the snakes. Insane number of snake holes. Be smart, don’t get bit by a snake. It can’t be good.

50 States. 250 Courses.
On a beautiful Tuesday morning at work, two individuals had a brilliant thought. Job sucks, lets play golf. Since then, Aleks Nakutis (Florida State University) and Jared Rosenberg (Florida State University) have been planning trips throughout the country in an effort to visit and play the top ranked public golf courses in the country. The 2012 Golf.com listing of courses was used for the database. Each year this listing will change. Well, we don't give a shit. We are using 2012. Live with it. This trip has a hefty prize associated with it. $2,500 to the winner of the majority of states (26) and $2,500 to the winner of the majority of courses (126). The winner of the round pays for breakfast the next time as well as chooses where they will dine. Pictures will be posted of the course played as well as a 3 minute video following the round discussing topics you care about. This includes a quick overview of the facility, the course, cart girls, and of course the beat down that occurred. The full listing of golf courses to be visited can be found at the following location: http://www.golf.com/courses-and-travel/best-public-golf-courses-every-state-2012 The spreadsheet where scores are maintained can be found at the following location: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqUCxnnCz3PedC1RT1pDY2RKZVFmZXBxVzBCR216QUE&usp=sharing
