you put your stuff down at the counter of the cafe, setting up your laptop and taking a seat on the pillow atop the mahogany chair. not even five minutes later, a caramel macchiato slid towards the direction of where you were sitting.
"your usual! let me know if you want me to change it to something else though. you can pay when you leave!"
"thank you, yechan," you smiled. even though he had only been hired three or four weeks ago, lee yechan had already memorised your usual coffee order and your usual spot inside the cafe. well, to be honest, you were the only one who sat at the counter of the cafe, so you were really the only customer who talked to him (that you knew of).
"how are your assignments going? did you manage to fix that issue with your excel sheet?" yechan asked, leaning over the counter to take a peek at your laptop. his face came dangerously close to yours, and you couldnt help but admire his full lips and soft skin.
you nodded. "yeah, i managed to turn the project in. i have a closed book exam on friday, though." an exam that you maybe hadn't really studied for. and maybe it was wednesday.
yechan sucked a breath in, shaking his head. "yikes," he said, "coffee's on me until friday then!"

shaking your head, you returned to your work, taking a sip of your coffee. however, you noticed that you could taste almond milk instead of dairy, a customisation you had only requested with your last order, and you couldn't help but smile. he remembered.
the next day . . .
for some unknown reason, the cafe was infuriatingly busier than usual. students rushing in, office workers chatting cordially while waiting for their coffees, and worst of all, your specific spot on the counter was taken, and so were all the other seats on the counter.
when you went to the counter, it was the other barista, yujun, taking your order. after your payment went through, he gave you your table number and you whipped your head around to thankfully find a seat by the window.
not bothered enough to get your stuff out while waiting for your drink, you scrolled on your phone for a while, still wishing you could sit at your usual spot.
five minutes later, yechan's perplexed voice rang in your ears. "y/n? why are you sitting here??" you looked up, and yechan was standing with your drink, eyebrows furrowed in genuine confusion. "you're supposed to be sitting at the counter so we can talk!!"
you laughed as he set your drink down on the table, motioning at the full counter. "you could kick someone out."
yechan brightened up. "i would do that!! which one?" he giggled.
after pretending to think for a while, you shrugged. the two of you stared at each other shyly, your cheeks heating up.
"well, i'll see you soon!" yechan blurted out, rushing towards his spot behind the counter to take care of the drink orders that were beginning to slow down.
you couldn't focus on your studying, even with your laptop out. instead, you eyed the counter like a hawk, waiting for someone to vacate one of the seats.
in some lucky twist of fate, the man who had been sitting at your usual seat got up and headed out of the door. you rushed to place your laptop, bag and drink down on the counter, smiling to yourself. peering over the coffee machine was yechan, smiling and waving at you. after beaming back, you turned to your laptop to study for the rest of your stay at the cafe.
once you were done going over your notes, you realised yechan was sitting next to you, typing on his phone. the cafe was practically empty, with only a trio of friends sitting in the corner as they softly chatted away over a slice of cheesecake. checking the time, you saw that it was 20 minutes before the cafe closed.
