ive been meanin to get into alcohol a bit more, but most drinks i really like (because it tastes very similar to fruit juices, soda or chocolate) usually lack a bit in the ethanol vol%. is there a set correlation between sweetness and alcohol%, or is there some wisdom to find more drinks in this direction? Lately i bought a really nice rum, but the 65% is quite noticeable on the tongue.

interestingly this question hits on a combination of my interests as i’ve recently been working on machine learning models trained on wine datasets and through data exploration i can say that generally sweetness has about a -3.49% correlation with alcohol level, so basically they are not correlated at all. Keep in mind this is a limited dataset but i can also corroborate this through lived experience.

sweetness has relatively strong correlation with the amount of sulfur dioxide in the drink which is a lot harder to measure when ordering a drink in the bar or at the liquor store. this is because the sulfur dioxide is required to stabilize the drink to retain sweetness

though i guess it can be said that some higher ethanol drinks may appeal to people who like sweet stuff, that’s generally not an attribute of the alcohol itself but rather an additive to the drink to mask its bitterness

ultimately it depends on the drink but generally higher alcohol will taste bitter unless it’s offset by some sort of added sweetener

generally if you find straight spirits to be too bitter, dont drink it straight. add something to it or find something designed and marketed as sweet

i made a really good file storage system that im trying to pass as a good project for job appllications but basically it can parse superblocks and FATs in C and copy files between local directories and .img files and shits and its really cool
