Tonky was almost tolerable in IW, especially from a first viewing standpoint. I couldn't focus on what he actually said and did because there was a lot of stuff happening. It wasn't until I actually thought about it and then it was a big old nope. His whole take the fight to Titan/Thanos with a grand total of 3 had me confused because that takes a lot of ego.

yeah, and i feel like the fact that strange kept calling him on his shit helped too. he seemed slightly less obnoxious than usual, but his snark has gotten so old now.

i get that it was supposed to be that he wanted to avoid casualties but it just didn’t make sense to me since i thought they had an idea of how powerful thanos was? (i thought bruce told them?) sorry to relate everything to video games again lol but my brother and i were talking about how it’s like… jumping ahead to the final boss of a game with maybe 1/4th of your full party, very few items, and no knowledge of the final boss, its weaknesses, or even the setting you’ll be fighting in. it’s just… so obviously a Bad Idea?? i don’t know what tony was thinking

Paralyzing Rhodey was such a useless plot device to give Tonky more angst bc it became about him. They showed him in a brace but never really touched on any of it aside from that exchange with Ross. We're supposed to go with it happening off-screen, but it really did nothing for the story other than for Tonky and his stans using it for his whining.

Jumping off of the nanotech ask, but wouldn't that stuff help Rhodey walk? I mean, maybe he doesn't want it or whatever, but it actually looked like he had some brace in IW? Basically, I need to know more about his recovery lol.

don’t we all…. but alas, the mcu has so far glossed over it and it’s unlikely they’ll be filling in the details. this is why i kind of hate being in a fandom for movies; movies have such limited time that they skip over a lot of the interesting character stuff to focus only on plot-related things

he did have some kind of brace in IW, yeah. i wonder if the nanotech stuff is something tony more recently developed? i know i’m a ~~tony anti~~ but i’m sure he would have prioritized getting braces for rhodey completed before upgrading his armor

More to the point, what was the actual point of making Rhodey disabled in the first place? Because all it seems to me is providing angst for two white people (I mean yes Vision is a red android but … come on he has all the mannerisms of a middle age white guy - probably because he is played by a middle aged white guy), and it’s dropped so quickly that there doesn’t seem to be any justification for it existing. It provides no actual character development for Rhodey nor does it actually add anything. It’s a microcosmof a lot of the problems of Civil War.

they wanted to have ~real stakes~ in CW so people would be misled into thinking the movie was well-written, and one of the geniuses at marvel had a stroke of brilliance: “let’s add stakes by having a white guy’s black best friend get permanently paralyzed, and use it to give the white guy more angst rather than ever focusing on the disabled black guy and what he now has to deal with.” and the other middle-aged white dudes working on the movie thought this was perfect

If I were a Tonky fan, I'd actually be disappointed that his character growth hasn't really stuck. I think a lot of people get distracted by the laughs and fail to see how problematic he is at times. At what point do the excuses for his behavior end and he needs to be held accountable? Movie after movie it's one step forward, two steps back. Especially with how he treats others. It just seems like his quips are thrown in like a shiny object.

seriously. i used to love the character but a combination of The Stans, cw, and homecoming changed that quite a bit. his character development can be so inconsistent and cyclical... and i always wonder how much less general audiences would be charmed by him if he wasn’t so quippy and allegedly funny

Why is Tony going around with nano tech suits and even giving Peter upgraded ones while Rhodey seems to get the least?

hah, this probably isn’t the response you wanted but it’s most likely just the writers thinking that rhodey doesn’t need an upgrade because he’s not one of the most main characters and his suit looks cool enough as it is, or them just not thinking about it. i feel like i have enough reasons to be annoyed with tony in canon without reading into this lol

tbh while i’ve never loved the designs, i definitely like the older-looking suits better than that extra-ugly nanobot one so i don’t mind rhodey keeping the better-looking style of suit

This comment is sooo weird bc I’m really curious what op thinks makes Steve a good Soldier. Like as far as I’m aware constantly disobeying orders bc you disagree with them does NOT make someone a good soldier. Like that’s kind of frowned upon in most militaries, at least from what I know.

Also the fact that person thinks you can be a sociopath AND a hero??? That kind of completely goes against the definition of sociopath. I mean a person who’s behavior is antisocial, often criminal and lacking of moral responsibility or social conscience wouldn’t be someone that I’d consider heroic. But they admit that Steve’s a hero??? Soooo strange.

Maybe I should just accept the fact that anti Steve people use buzzwords with no understanding of the actual meaning of those words to try to bash the character. seriously. i know people like to meme about how RDJ and tony are the same person, but… they’re not… and tony can be an absolute emotionally-stunted manchild. he’s prone to being a snarky asshole and most of the interaction we’ve seen him have with the other avengers has been at least mildly antagonistic. i don’t really think he should get special treatment for funding a team that he’s an off-and-on member of and very invested in, and he’s never been portrayed as especially close to any of the others (besides rhodey, but rhodey was tony’s friend before becoming an avenger.) the relationships that the other avengers have with tony is very different to the relationships that other cast members have with RDJ lol

The not trading lives line is being taken out of context of the entire conversation. It's like they pull one line and warp it to fit their narrative when. It's also hilarious that some Tonkies are so over protective of Wakanda after having bashed T'Challa over working with Steve and saying get him a shield. Too bad for them, T'Challa and Steve are like brothers (as said by Chadwick and I believe canon in the comics as far as their friendship is concerned).

i just think it’s funny as shit that they’re actually trying to say that steve saying they don’t trade lives is ~problematic~. like i can’t believe that asshole doesn’t just agree to murder his teammate right off the bat! how selfish can he be, wanting to look into other options!

sacrificing lives is something that villains and antiheroes do, not so much morally good characters. i know it didn’t work out in this particular scenario because thanos won, but it’s beyond embarrassing that tonkies are trying to frame steve’s “we don’t trade lives” as Wrong

and yeah lol. i guess it’s possible that the t’challa and shuri bashers were a different… faction… of tonkies than these particular weirdos, but it’s still funny how their views just seem to be based off what they think the best way to demonize steve is, or how much a certain character can be used as a ~defense squad~ member or whatever bullshit

it’s funny how you always see tony stans going on about how tony antis need to focus on celebrating what they love, stop being negative, etc, but plenty of tony stans devote time to writing and/or actively seeking out fic in which characters they dislike get murdered

When Civil War came out I went to two separate screenings and spent the first time generally freaking out about the film and concerned how much Tony was in it. I was anxious about the time running out and him still being so much in it. Second time, since I knew how it ended, I knew to pay attention to different things and yeah it is sort of a cap movie, like for the first 45 minutes until he disappears from his own film and it turns into a Tony show.

ugh i know. there are times when it’s almost a cap movie but then it switches focus to tony wangst again and the feeling is lost. tony has his own trilogy of movies, he does not need to be in a cap movie that much; i don’t care if it’s supposed to be CW, make it CW but put the primary focus on steve’s side if you’re trying to claim him as the titular fucking character. i can’t believe we saw tony’s mom in the movie that was supposed to be the final cap movie and the most with sarah fucking rogers was a name-drop. what kind of bullshit....

tony gets way too much spotlight in the MCU in general and it’s fucking exhausting. i’ve always thought the “we have to focus on the character that started it all significantly more than any other character despite these being ensemble movies,,, also tony despite his various fuckups and the way he’s written as an absolute asshole most of the time is the ~heart and soul~ of the MCU” vibe that the MCU gives off is pretty embarrassing lol... they write this character making sexual comments about a teenager’s aunt/legal guardian in front of said teen.... and that’s their Heart and Soul of the MCU.... yikes....

In all honest both Team Cap and Team Ironman ( Besides Tchlla) are severely underwritten in CW. Also for all the spotlight Tony hogged in CW, he still highly incontinence and unsympathetic. Steve didn't get any development at all, he was in character, but still he ulimately got only one scene to voice his view of the Accords and beyond that nothing.

yeah, the accords were pretty much a plot device used to move the plot forward and create conflict, and then they were largely forgotten about. i’m not expecting much more on the accords in the future, really

for all that the writers supposedly wanted to get people to think about who was right, they sure didn’t bother giving any of the characters much in the way of arguments ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

character development was sacrificed for dumb hero vs hero fights. i wouldn’t say that steve got no development, but his character definitely could have been explored better, especially since it was supposed to be his movie lmao. the deleted scenes are good for giving some more insight but he really got screwed over for the sake of marvel trying to one-up DC

lmao T'Challa literally could have said no. So he was 100% behind the decision. I don't think some of these Tonkies realize what they were trying to do would have benefited the entire world??? Like, the threat of Thanos impacted all of them. The meaning of not trading lives seems to go above their heads because heroes try to find another way first. It probably would have worked if they had more time. The Tonkies would have jumped all over Steve if he agreed to sacrifice Vision too.

it’s not like it was planned, since no one knew there would be another attack so soon after the last, but wakanda, being as incredibly advanced as it is, is pretty much the best place possible to try to put together the best defense of earth possible.

and yeah, basically no matter what steve did, there was gonna be backlash from the tony standom. lol i bet that if steve had agreed on the “let’s kill vision” plan there’d be stupid meta about how vision is basically tony’s robot son and of course steve is willing to kill him, what a monster

I love the fact that everyone jumps straight to murdering Vision without even trying anything else but don’t even think about the fact that what if Thanos had been taken down or stopped before he even got to Earth? Then they just killed Vision for literally no reason, so congrats on the irreversible murder?

I swear, it’s like people don’t conceive of the fact that characters don’t see the trailer. They don’t know how things are going to turn out and that Thanos is going to invade with all those aliens and shit, at that point in time they’d whooped the Black Order’s asses and Thanos was nowhere to be seen? The only way for me to belive that it was logical for the winter soldier to be sent to kill the starks is if it's either symbolic on hydras part or if they expected stark to have some kind of bodyguards or tech that would make the mission more difficult. Stark senior is a tech genius, and I can see hydra assuming he had some kind of safety measure in place that they would need an assassin to complete the mission. Again this is just me speculating, otherwise you're right, it doesn't make sense.

My theory is that HYDRA did it to test how well their conditioning was working. Bucky likely knew Howard. Doing this tested recognition and ability to kill in one. Also, the irony of having their supersoldier bring them the means to make more and better supersoldiers 

i can see the points, especially with the irony and the test aspect. honestly, i think my big issue is i just found the whole thing kind of ridiculously convenient. like, howard manages to replicate the serum, apparently perfectly, when i always had the impression that the serum was this Big Deal and had never been truly replicated before, everyone else had Failed in some way, but howard, who worked in weapons, somehow managed to Secretly do it… i mean i guess there’s the excuse that he worked with erskine back in the day and maybe had access to some notes that other people didn’t, though in TFA they established that the full serum ingredients were lost along with erskine… ok tbh i can’t look at this rationally at all because i’m still lowkey butthurt about how it took away from the specialness of the serum so much?? hhhh i feel like it does a disservice to erskine + cap 1 in general, and imo came out of nowhere; i was under the impression that howard had been looking for steve because they had been allies and howard cared about him a lot, not because howard wanted to ~create more supersoldiers.~

comic book movies are always full of contrivances but so much about CW just came off as ridiculously contrived and i found the recreation of the serum really annoying, and then there was the convenient fucking video camera recording every moment of tony’s parents being killed, conveniently by bucky when any other assassin could have done the job with good equipment, and they conveniently kept a recording of their assassin at work, and of course tony conveniently joined steve and bucky there in siberia. it was just… too much… for me…
