Adrift - Open

Mira had her fork halfway up to her face with food before she registered what the woman across from her had said. She turned a shade of red, and tried to hide her embarrassment. “No I, don’t usually wait on such formalities, ya know, eating alone all the time… Sorry…”

She held up her free hand, “No no it’s fine, I don’t myself but I didn’t want to be rude.” She reached over and tapped the console on the wall, a few condiments sliding out from a recess. Picking up a glass bottle of some sort of sauce she poured it over her meal before taking a bite. “There are quite a few groups in Echani Space who can use a pilot, ship or no ship. So, you have options.”

“Well, it’s a corporate ship…” Mira trailed off in thought for a moment while she ate. “I can’t imagine, given the current circumstances, that they’d get terribly upset with me for using the ship for other things, so long as I continue to maintain it as well as I have. And given that I spent a good 6 months learning how to fix a YT-1300, before they let me even fly it once, I think I’ll be ok on that front.”

“I see.” She nodded, and took another bite. “And that’s if, maker have mercy, there is still a company to claim ownership.” It was a solemn thought, and one Callista pushed away not wanting the young woman to dwell. “Even if, there are many who would hire without a ship, and loan one. Our parent company even has a habit of granting a ship to their pilots, and in turn when they retire the pilot sells the ship back, it’s considered a return on investment, as a ship in a pilots name tends to be taken better care of.”

“Well, if you wanted to give me a couple names to talk to, or just pass my name along, I sure wouldn’t mind. I really don’t relish the idea of being out of work for very long...” Mira replied before taking a few moments to enjoy the meal she’d been given.

“Though to be honest I imagine it’ll only be a week or two max before I hear something from STL. The company has a couple Nebulon B’s it uses for escort duty, and some sort of bigger ship, I’m not sure what it is, but the owners really don’t stay in one place very long, it’s entirely possible they weren’t even on Hosnian Prime.”

“I know… I don’t always eat like crap, just most of the time…” Mira replied, rolling her eyes a bit. “Besides, I do make sure I’m staying healthy, healthy enough. This trip was a little rough on me is all.”

“Mhm. Cause you’re BMI drops that significantly after a day, two at the most, in induced medical stasis.” An older Echani male came up to the table, and settled down two bowls, Mira’s noodles, and Callista’s larger bowl of stir-fry. He also set down two cups, and explained to Miria, since she was a guest, that each booth had a drink dispenser mounted in the wall. Though it was a good idea to run water through it a moment first use.

After he walked away Callista looked back at Mira, a fork in her hands. “Do you have any sort of religious or traditional pre-meal rites you’d like to attend to or is it alright for us to dig in?”

“Well… My father died when I was 3 years into med school, so about 6 years ago. My mom hadn’t worked in a decade or more, she had been a teacher before she started raising my little brother and sister. Dad worked for the government, or so we thought, and as such, we thought there’d be some sort of pension, or insurance, or something… But with his savings running out, we discovered that wasn’t the case, and that somebody had to bring in some money. So I dropped out of school, was hired by STL, and my mom got to stay at home and raise the little ones.” Mira rattled off, like it had been practiced one too many times. Unfortunately, it had been, but only because in all her years working for STL she really hadn’t told that many people, despite preparing for it…

“That’s pretty noble of you.” She said with a warm smile. “A lot of people would give up, others might even run from the problem. It says a lot that you would give up on so much to take care of them, even at the expense of your health.” She gestured forward towards the woman, “But if you’re not in good health, and you should know this from your time in medical school, you might find yourself incapable of being so selfless, because you can’t even take care of yourself.”

Mira sighed in relief. She had inherited her mothers looks, and not-so-razor-sharp wit, but definitely not her cooking skills. “I… think I’ll have the noodles and nerf-meat sauce?” Hopefully it would be a safe choice, her body might not agree though with having been on rations for so long…

“Seems a little light but it’s probably a good start.” Callista agreed, and then with the wave of a finger the datapad that Mira held beeped and displayed the order as complete, along with a serving of hawkbat stirfry for Callista herself. “So dear, I’m going to take it that you do what you do in order to send credits back home? Is your family in some sort of bad position?” She clasped her hands together and leaned forward, “It isn’t criminal related is it? They’re not being held against their will or anything? Because if that’s the case then you certainly landed on the right ship. If not, well, you still may have.”

Mira took more than a few minutes to look at the menu, occasionally asking questions about things she hadn’t heard of. To say that she hadn’t really eaten anything approaching real food in a while, was an understatement. Unfortunately, most of it sounded delicious. “I don’t have to cook it myself do I?” She asked in a moment of panic.

Up to this point, Callista had found the pilot cute, she was a looker yes, and that little flight suit did little to hid anything the imagination, and a little backscatter visual receptors, couldn’t fill in. But the simple innocent reaction of her thinking she might have to cook something skyrocketed her into adorable. “No dear,” She smiled, “We have dedicated cooks who will make your meal.”

Mira’s stomach seemed to agree with the idea as it made a low rumbling sound. Which bothered her, since it wasn’t like she’d been starving, yet… Ok, maybe she was hungry. It had been a day since she’d actually eaten… “Lead on my blue haired friend.”

The lift ride up to deck 3 was much quicker, and Callista lead the young woman to the loung, which also served as the ships mess hall. Deck 3 was the ships first full sized deck, with the two upper decks residing in the bulge atop the ship, containing the bridge, captains quarters, and various other rooms and equipment related to the command staff and ship operations.

Nearly half of Deck 3 however was dedicated to the Mess Hall. In the past it’d be full of people, the vivid smells of food cooking in the back ground, it was however right now very quiet. The scent of a few meals being prepared was prominent, spice, the seasoning kind, Mira would learn, was an essential part of Echani cooking. After all, they had to fight Eshan’s colder than normal climate, despite it’s temperate rating, many would consider it a Subarctic planet.

Once inside, Callista grabbed a menu pad and handed it to Mira, then ushered the woman off to a booth looking out the fore viewports. The viewports, Mira would note, had armored shutters, that for the moment were locked open. “Alright,” The woman took a seat across from Mira, “Order whatever you want, it’s not going to cost you, or I, anything. So eat up.”

Mira took more than a few minutes to look at the menu, occasionally asking questions about things she hadn’t heard of. Mira was about to reply to the supposed bodyguard/secretary when the door in front of her opened and she was yet again distracted, by the second person who she’d been unavoidably faced with. What was it with all the good looking people seemingly on this ship… “Uh, thanks.” She mumbled to the comment about her ship. As the door shut behind him, she couldn’t refrain from asking the question that had just come to mind. “Is everyone here this gifted with their looks?”

“Well, it is said that the Echani are quite an alluring people. It may have something to do with the whole physical combat training since birth thing.” She put a finger to her bottom lip and pondered, “And then there’s the whole family genetics thing, Sons look a lot like their fathers, daughters their mothers. ‘We honor he face of our parents,’ they say.” She turned back to the woman, “As for me, I was born with it. Now let’s go get you some food.”

Mira looked away in embarrassment, this time she hadn’t even realized she was staring. “Sorry” She mumbled. She wasn’t ignoring the information about her Company, she’d just already come to the same conclusion, and was hoping for the best. The Company HQ was sort of a formality, but there was still a chance that for all intents and purposes, she’d be out of a job for good. “Thanks, for everything.”

“Don’t thank me just yet, I’m only a bodyguard and a secretary.” As the woman turned towards the door it hissed open, a tall man hair as white as the others down his back in what had probably been at one time a very nice braid stood there for a moment. Yawning.

“Callista.”

“Oh, Master Vincent.” The woman sounded genuinely surprised at the man’s sudden appearance. “I was just about to escort our newest guest to the lounge.”

“And I was about to get a stim, 36 hours is a long time, and I still have a debriefing to do when we arrive at Eshan in an hour.” He stepped past the two women, seemingly ignoring Mira as he moved to a cabinet. He rummaged through for a moment before speaking again. “Your freighter is in good condition for a century old design.”

He pulled a vial out of the cabinet, placed it into an injector, and pressed it against his neck, flexing his shoulder afterwards. “Not often you see the YT-1300 anymore,” He turned back around and finally gave Mira a good look, noticing her still flustered, and then looking over at Callista. “Let the woman breath a bit before you go trying to jump her bones Callie.” He walked back by her and patted the azure haired woman on the head before heading out the door and calling out. “And buy her a nice meal, she looks a bit gangly.”

“I uh, yeah. I eat rations a lot.” The freighter pilot replied, glancing at the screen as well, with a barely concealed sigh. “I make decent enough money, but I send everything I can to my family.”

“So that’s what you need to tell your mother.” She frowned, crossing her arms again. “Your ship is registered to a company that was stationed on Hosnian Prime. So now you have to contend with the loss of that.” The woman closed her eyes and sighed before opening her eyes and forcing a smile, “Well maybe we can do something about that. For now, lets get some meet on them bones, or else you’ll never be as well equipped in the area you keep glancing at on me.”

“So am I going to die at a moments notice?” Mira asked perhaps a little too sardonically as she stepped out of the scanner. “Or do I have to live a long and healthy life still?”

“No immediate death in your future that I can forsee.” She tilted the screen over so the woman could see. “You should probably think about increasing your caloric intake. Your BMI is a tad low, I suspect you haven’t been eating much more than rations for a while? That drink may need to turn into a meal.”

“I uh, yeah. I eat rations a lot.” The freighter pilot replied, glancing at the screen as well, with a barely concealed sigh. “I make decent enough money, but I send everything I can to my family.”

“Oh…” Well, if people weren’t poking and prodding her, it wasn’t really an issue now was it. Though, she’d probably have words with whoever interpreted her results. Nice words maybe, since it was likely to be her current guardian. “Oh shit, what am I gonna tell my mother…” She muttered as she stepped through the door that was indicated.

“That you’re alive?” Was about the only response Callista had before the door sealed behind the woman. Letting out a breath of air she brought up the pods controls and began the routine scans. Pulse normal, if slightly elevated, blood pressure was good, no radiation that could be seen. BMI seemed a bit low, like she wasn’t getting all the proper nutrition she needed, but that might be a personal choice. A few more seconds went by as it checked her for contagions, as the blood they took before she actually woke up was ran and came back negative. Pressing the the comm button for the pod she leaned in, “Alright, you can step back out now.”

Mira gulped a little nervously. “Have you ever heard the axiom ‘doctors make terrible patients’? I feel like it applies here…” She said as she never-the-less followed the, whatever-she-was, out of the lift and into the medbay.

“I’m told that I have an amazing bedside manner, and if you ask nicely I’ll even hold your hand.” She stepped up to a door, which slid open at her presence and motioned for the woman to step inside. “It’s nothing but a scan pod you’ll need to step into, won’t even have to take off that flight suit, unless you wanna.” She gave a smirk once they were inside. “Just step through the door on the left and stand still for about thirty seconds.”

“I’m sorry, it’s the doctor in me, I’m, curious. Though if we go back to your rescue, your rules, does buying you a drink count? Assuming your ship has a bar, or whenever we get back to, what did you say, Eshan?” Mira was far past considering this rescue to be anything but, so she was gonna pester the shit outta the person in front of her. She blamed the drugs.

“Plenty of nice places to eat at the station we’re going to.” She seemed to bounce back and forth on her heels as the lift proceeded up. “And you’re a doctor? Quite a catch I’ve gotten then.” The lift door hissed open and she stepped out, the air rushing past her as she did so, “If you’ll follow me, medical is up on the left, and we’ll get you looked at. Nice and thoroughly.”

“You’re not Human, are you?” Mira asked, having slowly followed the entourage down the boarding ramp and off of the freighter. “I mean, they’re, Echani, or maybe just like white hair, but you… That ship had to have been below 0°, no way you could be wearing that and not nearly freeze to death.”

The azure haired woman held up a finger as she walked across the hangar deck, waving back and forth “It’s considered rude to ask a lady to divulge her deepest secrets before the first date ma’am.” She stepped into a turbolift and held it for the other woman, the medical team finally giving up and breaking off to go check on the other pilots. Once Mira was inside she pressed a command and the lift began to rise, it’s destination being Deck 5. “Maybe I just really like the cold and how it feels?”
