the whole ethics of small artist business practices discussion is also really rough because a not insignificant amount of the people who end up making that their living are doing so because they are structurally barred from more standard and secure employment for various reasons. if you, like me, are far too disabled to survive via entry level positions in places like retail or food service and lack the qualifications to get a foot in the door for a desk job then your options are extremely limited. i was trying to make a living with art after i left school because it's one of the only ways you can make money if you have to spend most of your time in bed.
i am extremely lucky to have a robust enough support network of friends and family to know that whatever happens i will never be homeless, and even luckier to have friends hook me up with a work from home position i never in a million years would have been in consideration for without a referral. it's not lost on me that it is significantly easier for me to take a strong stance on this issue than it is for other people with similar circumstances through absolutely no merit of my own. but ultimately no matter how precarious your own situation is, being in a position where purchasing cheap foreign labor to sell goods at a significant markup is even an option is a pretty notable privilege! and not only that, but factory work itself can also be disabling. Disabled People and Foreign Factory Workers aren't two separate groups of underprivileged people with competing material interests and i just can't ever let myself think of it that way. it would be wrong.
disabled people outside of the imperial core aren't a gotcha to win an argument they're not a rhetorical tool they're not a thought experiment. a lot of them are in fact disabled because of what has been done to their environment in the name of global commerce. they're real people and any politics of disability that considers them irrelevant or disposable isn't good enough.
and so the question then becomes: if you are a disabled artist, if selling merch really has been the only way you've found to make ends meet, what are you supposed to do? i don't have a good answer because i'm literally just some lady with a blog and solving all the ethical contradictions of living as a disprivileged person in an incredibly privileged parts of the world is a bit above my paygrade. but it would also be wrong to pretend like this is not a real dilemma people have to contend with.
the line a lot of people use to justify small businesses' practices to themselves and others is "why are we holding independent artists to higher standards than big corporations?" but i do think this is a bad argument for a lot of reasons. if you reframe this question even a little bit, you'll realize what's being asked is "Why do we expect our peers to behave more ethically than entities that are structured to extract the maximum possible wealth from the world, and consider human lives to be a disposable commodity used towards that end?" I would hope the answer to This particular question is self evident.
nasa is using a 3D world graphic for the solar eclipse thingy today where germany is still devided in east and west adjfglkafdhgadfg. buddies, it's been almost 40 years.
So I showed this to a physicist and they were like "Oh! Yes! It's a figure from Fred Espenak's very old paper where he did a bunch of eclipse graphics! I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"
Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here
So now instead of laughing at NASA for their outdated graphics I'm emotional about Mr. Eclipse and his hard work
pokemon is about siccing your dog on a creature that is intrinsically, biologically, a baby mime
pokemon is about an act your dog can perform on someone else’s dog, which sports announcers and scientists alike are calling “gunk shot”
Some of the new paintings I made for the expanded edition of my art book Woodlands.
The reason your snacks are unsatisfying is that you need both carb and protein.
Carb starts your engine, protein keeps it going.
No carb, engine don’t start. No protein, engine dies out fast.
Easy carb add on:
Cookie
Fruit (canned or fresh)
Chips
Piece of bread
Popcorn
Crackers
Easy protein add on:
Nuts
Spoonful of nut butter
Cheese
Roasted chickpea snacks
Glass of milk (dairy or non dairy)
Small canned sausages or similar
Sugar in there.
I am pleased by people messaging me telling me that after adding a carb or protein to their snacks or meals they feel more satisfied all day. Yes, my plan is working. People are getting through their days with less hangry.
First rescue this morning was a White-winged Dove down with possible impact related head trauma on Sunset Key. Thanks to volunteer Patty and Captain Betsy and crew who transported the patient on the ferry. The dove is recovering in our clinic now www.keywestwildlifecenter.org

We have got to stop framing our oppression in ways that promote the idea that other people cannot relate to our struggles. Not only does it isolate comrades in the struggle, it actively diminishes recognition of other struggles--often including those even more horrific than what we are at risk of. And this happens especially between Gay and Black struggles.
"when have straight people ever had to check what states were safe for them?" Sundown towns are still a thing. Starlight tours. What states have abortion access? What states have open carry? What states have stand your ground? What states have 3-strike rules? Women, people of color, disabled people, immigrants, and more have had to be abundantly cautious where they travel to. Straight trans people have much more travel risk right now than gay cis people.
It's a new iteration of the same tired question: "imagine if straight people weren't allowed to marry" interracial marriage in the US is younger than my parents. We disgrace people of color by forgetting their history and contemporary struggles, and we abandon queer people of color, Black queer people, by segmenting their overlapping fights.
As lovelyshananigans says, "intersectionality, babes"
