Loyola University Maryland head women's lacrosse coach Jen Adams announced Monday that seniors Marlee Paton and Katherine Reinhard, in addition to redshirt junior Taryn VanThof, will serve as team captains for the 2014 season.
What it means to be a Capitan:
Being a captain just isn't a title its a hefty job responsibility. Your teammates look to you for all kinds of answers. Your actions reflect your team and your program.
Top 10 characteristics of a great Captain:
1. One must be a leader. Have the ability to reinforce concepts, team goals and strategies. And act on those concepts and strategies to guide the team to achieve their goals.
2. Have the ability to organize. On and off the field this is a crucial component of a captain. Organize team functions, gatherings, and service as well as organize the team on the field and get them on the same page and moving together in the right direction.
3. Must be positive. Always enforce positive thoughts to their teammates and coaches. A negative captain is like the plague and can destroy a team.
4. Know your teammates strengths and weaknesses. A captain must recognize each individuals skill and what they bring to the team.
5. Use their skills accordingly. When you know everyone's skills and strengths you must have the awareness and knowledge you must use their abilities to their greatest potential and what will benefit the team most.
6. Be selfless. The game is not just about you. It takes an entire team effort to be successful. Think and act for the betterment of the whole team.
7. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Step up when needed. lead by example, your teammates will follow.
8. Be the mediator, solve the conflict. Every team will encounter some sort of internal or external conflict at some point in time. You must relieve issues in tension among the team.
9. Know your teammates and know yourself. Develop personal relationships with everyone. Its easier and more fun to play with someone you know and trust. Trust in your teammates and don't put too much pressure on yourself.
10. Be a mentor. A team captain understands the game. Give advice and tips to teammates. When instructing never criticize. Highlight and emphasize key concepts and reinforce these ideas to teammates.
