“shut up. now you’re just twisting my words.” just as quickly as she’d gotten started, fun time came to an end as soon as she got the slightest impression that mina was making fun of her. what other reason would she have to laugh at her completely serious statements? sunnie kim was not a person to be made fun of. “well yeah, it would’ve been fitting, but the full cupid gear would’ve been even more tacky. plus, can you imagine dancing in that shit? when it comes to that i’d rather have the hats, though they still sucked.” at this rate, she’d be eighty, decrepit and on her deathbed still ranting to some unconcerned nurse about those damn outfits. “i’m serious. drink some coffee, take a walk, something. we cannot afford to have you spacing out today.” or any other day, but she figured that the look on her face made that silent addition quite clear.

“i’m just teasing you, sunnie. i know you sold your soul for mind-blowing talent and eternal energy. the diarrhea thing is just a plus,” she sent a wink in the younger’s direction, hoping that she wasn’t pushing it too far. there was always a very fine line when it came to joking around with sunnie, and it wasn’t always easy to spot. “at least it would have made sense. the cowboy get-up was tacky and dumb. but i guess all we can do now is hope that all future cfs have much better concepts.” mina knew that once she got the leader started, it was difficult to get her to stop. she was stubborn and she loved to complain; if she had to, she would probably find something to criticize in everything around her. “i wouldn’t space out if you let me use you as a pillow to take a quick nap, but i guess coffee is the second best thing.”

sunnie glared briefly at the older rapper, unamused with her assumption. “MEANING i’ve built up my tolerance already and i don’t have to suffer from the shits. i don’t have to suffer from a lot of things anymore– besides that whole lightheaded thing. perks of selling your soul.” she nodded enthusiastically, wearing a faint smile for the first time in the day. “i didn’t mind the pink, i just didn’t get the purpose of the cowboy thing. i mean, i get it– shoot your heart and whatnot, but i still thought it was pretty tacky. a regular shorts set would’ve done just fine, honestly.” it was nice for once that someone besides luna shared her same criticisms. it let sunnie know that she wasn’t just complaining for the sake of complaining like she tended to do, not that it would ever stop her from doing so in the first place. there was always such a set idea in her mind for everything that the group did, and it killed her inside every time it strayed outside of her control. “well, that’s just too bad, you should really get with the times. good! no complaining, then.”

mina couldn’t help but laugh at the reaction she received, always amused with the tiny terror’s glare. sure, it could be scary when you first met her, but after receiving many a mean look, the rapper was more than used to them. “maybe you should have clarified, then. i didn’t realize that selling your soul meant you didn’t get diarrhea anymore. i’d say that’s a sweet deal.” even though she knew it was ridiculous, she still felt a bit pleased with herself for bringing out a smile on the leader. “it just took the tacky to a whole new level. there was just no reason for it. it would have made more sense if they gave us wings and a bow and arrow each.” while it was a strange thing to bond over, mina appreciated the fact that they could complain about something together. there weren’t many opportunities to hang out with the younger one-on-one, and she was more than aware that sunnie liked to keep their relationship somewhat professional, so she really did value the moments that made her feel somewhat close to the vocalist. “yeah, yeah, i'm not making any promises, but i'll try to keep it to myself.”

Once he got back to his dorm room, Minchan threw himself on his bed and pressed his pillow to this face, trying to fight back the urge to scream into it. “I really hate this, god fucking damn it.” He murmured, and he was actually at the verge of tears. He just had been through a particularly bad series of vocal lessons, and nothing made him question his right to be part of the company as those. Singing had admittedly never been his forte, and while he is decent enough that his voice - though it’s too high for a boy and he wasn’t sure people would even like it - wouldn’t ruin a song for others, he always had been quite self-conscious about it. So whenever he felt like he fucked up, it was really hard to stop himself from quitting, because what’s the point if he will never be good enough? The only reason why he never actually ended up quitting was one person, Mina. Minchan didn’t really remember how did she end up as his go-to person, but for a good while now she singlehandedly saved his future career at least a million times. So it was no surprise when with a sigh on his lips he took his phone out of his pocket and began typing a message to her - the only reason he didn’t call her was that he didn’t want to end up crying.

Mina couldn’t quite remember when her close relationship with the trainee had formed, but since meeting, she had developed into a form of therapy for him. It wasn’t that she ever really minded; she was a people-person, and a decent support system for her friends, so why not help him through his problems? In fact, it often made her feel a little helpful, knowing that she was there for him when training became a little too much. He deserved to know that he had someone rooting him on, and if it had to be her, then that’s just how it would be. She was on her way home from a shoot when she received his text messages, reeking of the hopelessness that made her stomach drop. Minchan had worked too hard to throw it all away, and she would be damned if she let it happen. She wasted no time before asking her manager to drop her off at the trainee dorm building, readying herself to lend a helping ear.

“pretty sure i’m immune by now, it’s the rest of you to be worried about.” sunnie shrugged, half in nonchalant response and half as an attempt to get mina’s head off her shoulder. coffee was basically what kept her running these days, that and more spite than her little body could humanely contain. “it sounds fun. it’s probably like the cupid one, except for an actual clothing company so we won’t be stuck in stupid cowboy outfits! god, fucking shoot me.” the enthusiasm that appeared on her face faded away just as quickly when her expression went flat, two fingers pressed to her temple to express her displeasure at the concept. there were many things that she was willing to let slide for the sake of promotion, but she’d never be over the wardrobe choices for their cupid cf. as much as she had wanted a comeback song in those times, she was glad that one wasn’t it. “not all of us can trade our souls for immortality, mina. it loses its charm by then, but you should still try your hardest to keep up. more time car napping and less time going back and forth with that model, it works wonders.”

“when you say ‘by now’, it sounds like you’ve already gotten the shits and had to overcome them to become immune.” not one to really push sunnie’s boundaries (too far), she moved her head away from the younger’s shoulder and rested it against the wall behind her. the leader was actually in a decent mood, and she didn’t want to be the reason that it went away. “as if it wasn’t bad enough that we had to wear cowboy hats, they made them hot pink. at least the song was catchy.” mina was never the type to complain about wardrobe – as long as they fit well and were comfortable enough to dance in, she had no problems –, but the cupid cf outfits would never be acceptable. why people even wanted a cowboy concept for a korean girl group confused her in the first place. an actual clothing company sounded promising, at least. “we can’t all function without a soul, either. you really don’t have to worry about me. the worst i’ll do is fall asleep backstage.”

sunnie was willing to be flexible with very few things, and this need for close contact with the people who she already saw every waking moment of the day wasn’t one of those things. it was a concept that she had little experience with. she grew up with no siblings and most of her cousins living halfway across the world, and most of the time when she was around other children her age, they were more concerned with their work and making a lasting impression of themselves to higher ups than developing friendships and giving out hugs. her whole life being dedicated to acting and later training meant that she wasn’t around her parents as much as other children, so physical affection from them was a rarity, and the thought of her even having a partner to cuddle up and take a nap with was a joke as well. truthfully, she’d push luna to the floor too if it weren’t for the fact that luna could easily destroy her in a physical fight. “typically comes with the side effect of blowout shits,” she answered with a snort that quickly melted away into quiet laughter. maybe she was getting tired. “you better get it together, mina. we have a meeting with some people from WHO.A.U about that cf after our post performance interview. we got through 2013 just fine, so this should be light work by now.”

if mina had to take a guess, she would say that her main reason for being such a touchy person had to do with the lack of physical affection she had experienced in her lifetime. growing up without a sense of family made her crave what she had missed out on, and it often came out in the form of skinship with her members -- especially when she was feeling exhausted. while sunnie was usually the last one she would go to for cuddling, she was currently the only one available. plus, she was just so tiny, she could fit perfectly snug up against the rapper’s side. she laughed along with the leader, an event that was quite rare in itself, “fingers crossed that none of us are effected by it. can’t really perform from the bathroom.” with a soft hum of acknowledgement, she forced herself to keep her eyes wide open. it wouldn’t look good if she was falling asleep on stage. “i know, i’m doing my best. i almost forgot about that meeting, god. i hope the cf will at least be fun this time around. it should be easy, but we can’t all be super humans like you.”

while everyone else started to drag on, sunnie truthfully could say that she didn’t feel much different. she was always the one to push herself double everyone’s 110% efforts, so the head nodding and heavy eyelids was a shared trait between all four members, but in a way this was just another normal day for her. after the first year she’d mastered the art of car naps and sleeping upright as she waited (it was always why she offered to be the last for hair and makeup), and the amount of espresso she downed in a day was probably enough to leave the average person jittering for weeks. masking her extreme exhaustion was one of her many talents, but even today, she made no attempts to cover up the fact that she was curled up in the corner of one of the sofas, awaiting her turn in the stylist chairs before going on stage. “sixteen,” she answered, eyes still closed shut in the hopes that mina’s first question would also be their last. “fifty if you ask again, seventy eight if you try it anyway.”

despite her extreme exhaustion, mina still managed to let out a small chuckle. yeah, it was an answer that she had expected (why else would she have asked the question in the first place?), but that didn’t mean she wasn’t at least a little bit disappointed. she was sure that the two of them could both use a quick cat nap, and she believed that the very best way to do that was snuggling close to someone else. “fine, fine, i won’t try it,” the rapper muttered with a slight pout on her lips. although she didn’t have permission to lay around in her lap, the younger hadn’t pushed her away just yet. and mina had always been one to push her luck when it came to the leader. pillowing her head in sunnie’s shoulder, she let out a sigh, “is there such a thing as caffeine overdose? because i feel like one of us will hit that point in the next few days.”

they were reaching the middle of their promotions, and mina was tired. and not the ‘boy, i feel sleepy’ kind of tired, but the ‘i feel like a walking, talking, rapping zombie right now’ type. while her eye-bags had been covered up by a layer of concealer, she felt as if no amount of energy drinks or cups of coffee would be able to energize her right now. all she wanted to do was lay down for five minutes, maybe six, to try and gather up some strength before going out on stage for yet another music show. and with two of the members currently getting their hair and makeup prepared, that left her with only one option for a pillow. sliding up to sunnie, the rapper curled into the shorter’s side, “on a scale of one to ten, what are the chances that you would push me to the ground if i tried to use your lap as a pillow right now?”

he reaches for the top of his head, fingers bristling past his fringe that’s been swept back. “yet.” he repeats after her with a grimace. “i hear stress can do crazy things to your body, like premature grey hair. thankfully grey hair has been trendy since last year so i might be off the hook for a while until the trend dies. if you suddenly see me with silver hair one day, you know the reason why.” if he’s ever to grow a strand of grey hair, there’d be tons of people who’d let him know right away. he can definitely expect sujeong to point it out if she ever sees one. joowon is oddly touched, face blanking for a second before his lips press together to hold back a smile. “well, yes, i guess brother would be more appropriate.”

“mm, well.” a man of careful optimism, he doesn’t let the external circumstances that are not in his control turn him into a cynical one. but there are the inevitable consequences of each move someone in a position like mina’s makes. female idols tend to fall back slightly when compared to male idols. “the two of you would have to be more careful. of course, you guys would have the pr’s full support but… we all know how some people can take things in the wrong way and blow it out of proportion. since it’s the olympics there would be more international attention as well, so please do prepare yourselves. if there’s anything you’re not comfortable with or confident about, let me know immediately. or your manger.” he pauses, pursing his lips. “just anyone before the public finds out before we do. you know how it goes.”

“okay, that’s good. if you can keep it up you’d be able to be considered for one of those variety programs like problematic man and abnormal summit.” he nods enthusiastically. “anyway, keep up the good work. you have no idea how refreshing it is to have an idol in my office who hasn’t been called in because they’re in trouble.”

“well, if it counts for anything, i think you would look dashing with a bit of grey on the sides,” her eyes crinkled in the corners with her smile, reaching up to touch the side of her own head. slim fingers ran through the strands as she let out a soft hum, “i think just a little right here would make you look very mature.” it felt silly that mina was enjoying her trip to the pr office, but when it was joowon she was meeting with, it was a bit of a given. the two had always gotten along so well, making the visit feel more like a personal meeting than a business one. she could recognize the expression that he tried to surpress, one that he wore to hide his amusement. it took a lot to keep her from reaching out and giving his cheek a poke, knowing that it wouldn’t necessarily be considered professional. “and you’re the best brother i could have asked for, oppa. i’m so lucky.”

mina nodded her head in agreement, “of course sunnie and i will be on our best behavior. i know that she can be a bit much at times, but she knows how to behave in public situations. and i’ve never really had much of a problem, though i’ll make sure i’m extra careful. this kind of exposure could do a lot, not only for l:oveless, but for tko. you know better than anyone that sunnie and i only want the best for the company.” even though she was certain that they wouldn’t run into any issues, she still made a promise to come to him if anything were to come up, “i promise, i will. the only concern i have right now would be my english, but sunnie has been helping me with my pronounciation lately. i think i’m really getting the hang of it!”

despite the soft blush that colored her cheeks, the idol put on a wide grin, “don’t flatter me so much. i’m not that smart. i’m much better off on variety shows that encourage goofing off.” a laugh bubbled out of her, able to sympathize all too well. “i’ll do my best! i’m always here to be your breath of fresh air. if we weren’t both so busy, i would invite you to the dorm for dinner some time. i've improved on my instant noodle making skills since the last time you were over.”

Yoonho returns Mina’s smile shakily, palms sweating at the thought of being alone with the idol. He’s never been around such a big star for an extended amount of time unless the two were already friends, and someone such as Mina of all people to be alone with. Well, he had to wipe his palms on the outside of his jeans to say the least.

The atmosphere takes a turn for the awkward once the dance coach is completely gone to complete his chores, leaving them behind. Usually Yoonho would speak up and break the tension, eager to make friends in the industry and get to know city folk. This time was different. His mind was such a mess and he had no clue how to start up any sort of topic with the other. Luckily, Mina broke the ice for him.

“Oh! I’ve been training for a year and a half, sunbaenim.” He responds with a nod, eyes purposely avoiding their gaze. “Total Knockout has been treating me very well.” And without the girl asking, Yoonho goes on a tangent, speaking too well in times like these. “I heard about your comeback, sunbaenim. I’m anticipating it a lot! All of L:OVELESS sunbaenims look pretty. I can’t wait for the live stage.”

Mina was feeling, in all honesty, quite silly for acting so awkward around a junior. Weren’t sunbaes supposed to be supportive and friendly? In her experience with seniors, they were all very open to interacting with her. And while she was trying her best to seem cool, all she was doing was making poor Yoonho even more nervous. She was a mood maker, for god’s sake! If she could keep L:OVELESS sane -- could calm the storm that was Kim Seoyeon -- she could do anything. Keeping an amiable conversation alive with a trainee was nothing.

Nodding her head along to his answer, the idol put on a much more comfortable smile. If she seemed at ease, maybe it would rub off on him as well. “A year and a half? It’s a shame we haven’t met before now. You must be working very hard.” Mina truly did enjoy meeting trainees. While it could be difficult with her schedule and their constant training, any opportunity given to chat with the future of the company was one that she appreciated. It had meant a lot to her as a trainee to talk with already debuted artists at the company, and she was sure that others shared that sentiment.

His compliments had a soft blush rising to the surface of her cheeks, her smile only brightening at his enthusiasm, “Are you really? It makes me really happy to hear that people are just as excited that we’re promoting as we are.” Her words might have sounded a little fake, but she truly did mean it. To know that all of the group’s hard work was paying off inspired Mina. “Will you be attending one of our stages? I’ve always felt that it’s much more exciting to witness a stage in person than from behind a television screen.”

“It’s clearly meant to be your rightful position since birth.” Miyeon knew that they were sincere in their request to hang out more, but she could tell now that it was far too hopeful. The rapper had a much busier schedule than she could ever dream of, and despite being a social person, in the past few years Miyeon had become more and more reclusive in an attempt to save herself and everyone else. There was still a part of her worried about a ‘friend’ spilling her business again, and she didn’t think that she was worth the trouble her label mates would get from hanging around her. “Yeah, I feel like crap. Like, totally helpless without a stylist to work through this mess for me.” A lack of energy and motivation left her completely lazy, and though it made her cringe to have to look at how bad her hair was, she still was too drained to do anything about it. “You don’t have to give me one for free, I can always buy one myself. But I am a fan of autographs from cute rappers, so there’s that.”

“I was put on this Earth to tell you how great you are,” they joked with a soft chuckle. Honestly, they wouldn’t really mind if that actually was their true purpose. Meeting and befriending Miyeon had been fate in their eyes. A lot of unfortunate events had led up to their first interaction, and Mina wished so desperately that they could turn back time and somehow change all of the horrible things that had happened, but it was the end result that really mattered. Maybe all of that happened because Miyeon needed someone like Mina to show her unconditional love. And maybe Mina needed someone like Miyeon to show them that it was okay to let down your walls and be real for once. Or maybe they were just being a sappy ball of emotions right now, the exhaustion of promoting finally catching up to them. “You’re a beautiful mess,” shifting in their spot on the couch, they leaned over to mush a sloppy kiss against her temple. Yeah, they were definitely being a sap today. “I’m sure I can put in a good word for you.”

fingers curling gently in her friend’s hair, the rapper took a moment to appreciate her company. it felt nice to take a short break from their schedules to just relax, something they both needed desperately during promotions. the pair could spend every day together for the rest of their lives, but nothing quite beat just laying around the dorm with melody. it gave off a sense of bonding that no other activity could replicate. “what? i thought i was your ideal type. i feel so betrayed,” any attempt of a playful pout was washed away by a fit of giggles that erupted from her. “have you even met him? that definitely factors in to whether or not there’ll be a dating scandal.”

I haven’t washed it in like, two days.” Had it been anyone else, Miyeon probably would have shown a bit more sympathy, but in this case she couldn’t even be bothered to fake a frown. “Was she really? I thought it was just a publicity stunt or something. But I’ll listen soon, don’t worry.”
