Pro-bending
In this popular spectator sport, two teams of three players face off in a ring perched high above a pool of water.
Each team has a Waterbender, a Firebender, and an Earthbender. The goal is to use bending to gain territory in the ring by pushing your opponent backwards, even knocking them off the back if possible. A team wins by a match by winning the most rounds, or performing a knockout.
Team names and mascots are selected from various hybrid animals in the Avatar Universe. Some of the most popular temas are the Rabarroos, the Boar-Q-Pines, the Wolf-bats, and the up and coming Fire Ferrets.
Every year, the sixteen best teams in the league compete for the championship in the elimination-style Pro-bending Tournament.

Bolin Male, 16, Earthbender
"I'm talkin' bout real love."
Unlike Mako, Bolin is an easy going optimist who never seems to be in a bad mood. But because Mako always tried to shield him from the harsh realities of the world after their parents died, Bolin can be naive and immature at times.
Bolin plays in the Pro-bending arena alongside his brother. If there's one thing that gets under his skin, it's the fact that he always feels second best to Mako - in age, in fighting rank, and even when it comes to getting girlfriends.
But for all their differences, the brothers share an intense bond and are fiercely loyal to each other. They always watch each other's backs and if it ever came down to it, neither sibling would hesitat to sacrifice their life to save each other.
People
Mako Male, 18, Firebender
"I did what I had to do to survive and protect my little brother."
Mako is one of the top players int he Pro-bending arena and captain of the up-and-coming team, the Fire Ferrets.
Mako's parents died when he was 8, leaving him alone to raise his younger brother, Bolin. Forced to take on adult responsibilities at a young age, Mako missed out on his childhood. Often, Mako had to use his Firebending to protect himself and his brother while living on the streets of Republic City.
One day, Toza, a former Pro-bender, discovered Mako fighting on the streets. He invited Mako and Bolin to live in a room in the attic of the arena and work odd jobs to pay rent, which allowed them to focus on Pro-bending.

Waterbending
Waterbending is one of the four bending elements of the four nations. Inspired by Tai Chi, Waterbenders possess the ability to control and manipulate water, and is used by members of the Northern and Southern Water Tribes, as well the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Waterbenders draw their power from the moon, and are strongest during the full moon. By using focused and drawn out movements, Waterbenders can shape and form water to be used however they want.
Extremely advanced Waterbenders can learn the ability to Bloodbend. This technique manipulates the water within one's body, allowing the bender to move the person's muscles, and even crush their internal organs.

Protestor Male, 35, Non-bender
"Let me guess, you're a bender?"
This Protestor, who grew up in Republic City, always wanted to be the center of attention.
He achieved this early on by always opposing the majority opinion, especially towards his paretns, who were non-benders but huge supporters of Avatar Aang.
The Protester's anti-bending viewpoint became stronger as the Equalist movement became more prevalent throughout the city, which led him to pursue his agenda full-time as a graduate student at Republic City University.
People
Gommu Male, 55, Non-bender
"Welcome to Republic City."
This friendly vagabond is a staple of Republic City Park. Not everybody is well off as you may imagine, so they come to the park for the fresh water, fish, and beauteous bushes.
Gommu was born in Republic City to immigrant non-benders. He was raised in an orphanage until he was 15, when he lied about his age in order to join up with the United Forces as a telegraph operator. Working on ships as they traversed the word, Gommu grew to love the nomadic lifestyle.
When the United Forces began replacing telegraphs with radios, Gommu found himself unemployed. Unsatisfied with the stationary life, he found himself attracted to the nomadic vagabond culture. Eventually he gave up his residence altogether and took to roaming the city looking for work and helping out his fellow citizens.
