(Republic City Gazette - Republic City) - After their win last night against the White Falls Wolf Bats, the Flying Boars are now set to head into the Pro-Bending Championship Tournament Final undefeated in their rookie season. In the final this Saturday, the Flying Boars will face defending champs the Black Quarry Boar-q-pines for a night that’s sure to be anything but “boar-ing”. The RC Gazette sat down with the Flying Boars’ earthbender, Toph Beifong, for an exclusive interview.

RCG: Congratulations on making it to final! That must be such a shock in your first season as a team.

TB: Not really.

RCG: You’re not surprised that your team made it to the final?

TB: No.

RCG: But no other team in the history of pro-bending has ever made it to the final in their first year.

TB: Yeah, well we’re just better benders.

A tall claim for a short young woman, but hard to deny. Despite their young ages (the eldest, Zuko, only recently turned 22), Toph, Zuko, and Katara are incredibly powerful benders. But individually powerful benders are not enough to make a winning team.

TB: We’ve been friends for years. I know [Zuko and Katara’s] bending styles and they know mine. We know how we each react to things so when we get in the arena we don’t have to stop and talk, it’s just go go go.

RCG: Shifting gears, your team name obviously comes from the symbol of your family, the Flying Boar. Your parents must be big supporters.

TB: HA! My parents are not pro-bending fans at all. 

RCG: Then why name your team the Flying Boars?

TB: I thought it would be funny. We were debating team names and not getting anywhere so I went ahead paid for the uniforms to be made for “the Flying Boars”. Zuko and Katara were annoyed at first, but not enough to want to pay for new uniforms.

RCG: I see... Now, Zuko and Katara are often noted as having strong chemistry both in the arena and out of it. Are the rumors of secret romance in the locker room true?

TB: Obviously. Don’t waste my time with stupid questions.

RCG: Wait, really?? I -

TB: Listen, it’s been real but I gotta roll. Rock and roll that is - ha!

There are some that might say a rookie team will only win the Pro-Bending Championship Tournament when pigs fly. But looking at their perfect record, and surrounded by their logo on everything from fan jerseys to multistory banners on buildings in downtown Republic City, it’s clear that even if pigs don’t fly, boars do.

Pro-bending

In this popular spectator sport, two teams of three players face off in a ring perched high above a pool of water.

Each team has a Waterbender, a Firebender, and an Earthbender. The goal is to use bending to gain territory in the ring by pushing your opponent backwards, even knocking them off the back if possible. A team wins by a match by winning the most rounds, or performing a knockout.

Team names and mascots are selected from various hybrid animals in the Avatar Universe. Some of the most popular temas are the Rabarroos, the Boar-Q-Pines, the Wolf-bats, and the up and coming Fire Ferrets.

Every year, the sixteen best teams in the league compete for the championship in the elimination-style Pro-bending Tournament.

I never got why LoK’s bending battles are dragged so much.

I mean, I get that sports matches aren’t for everybody but I liked Probending a lot in how it helped Korra’s training and for just how cool it was. So many rules to keep it mind means that to win, Korra has to be more controlled and refined like an Airbender.

On that last note, one too many infractions can cost the game. It could be tense seeing them trying to stay on the platform and use the elements they have. For Korra, this meant confining herself to only waterbending and resisting her usual go-to Firebending.

I just never got why people hate on pro-bending. It was cool.

The Pro-Bending Fire Team ━━  The Sun Dragons  火

Azlon, Ryota, Kwan, and Taiyang

These four were unlikely teammates. They each share firebending similarities, however, their backgrounds reflect different walks of life. Together they have a shared fascination with dragons and grow to see them and the sun as pure sources of bending (thanks to Taiyang’s influence). The team leader is Azlon, he had been on a few other four element pro-bending teams and long desired to be on a fire only team. Ryota has only ever been on pro-bending fire teams. Kwan is a fan of the sport but had never belonged to a team himself. Taiyang, well she had never heard of pro-bending much less been a fan. 

Azlon, age eighteen, the oldest member of the Sun Dragons. He was born and raised in Republic City to two firebenders. Azlon is proud of his strong Fire Nation heritage, his name even reflects previous Fire Lords. Azlon has spent countless training sessions, years of his life, preparing for fights in the arena. He has not learned the traditional or Sun Warrior style of firebending. He only uses the modern sporting forms. Azlon is not the strongest bender on the team, however, he is devious and will operate in the morale grey zone to achieve his goals. He has great skills in strategy, assessing opponents, and manipulating the situation to suit his needs. He is highly selective and likes to monopolize his gains. Azlon is a natural leader and seeks to win the Pro-Bending Fire Tournament. 

Ryota, age seventeen, the second oldest member of the Sun Dragons. He was born and mostly raised in the Fire Nation (in Fire Fountain City). When he was fourteen he moved to Republic City where he lived a wealthy lifestyle. Both of his parents are diplomats for the Fire Nation to the United Republic. Aside from Taiyang, he is the strongest bender on the team. Ryota desires to learn the purest form of firebending and knows that the modern Pro-Bending influenced style derives from the old ways but he still seeks to learn more. Ryota is generally quiet and reserved. His personality is introverted mixed with a white-grey moral compass. 

Kwan, age sixteen, the third oldest member of the Sun Dragons. He has had a troubled life- often plagued with times of hunger and anger. In his childhood he had to resort to thievery to avoid starvation for him and his younger siblings. Kwan’s father was a firebender and his mother a non-bender. They would often leave Republic City to sell their merchandise, having Kwan run their small shop. They would typically only be gone for a week or two at most to reach other traders and return with money and special goods. One day they didn’t come back, leaving their three children to fend for themselves. Eventually the kids couldn’t run the shop anymore and were cast out into the streets. Since then Kwan has had to defend them and try to earn a living in the Pro-Bending Arena. Generally he is overly defensive, always worried, black-grey moral compass, and has developed many acrobatic skills.
