Exactly what it sounds like, I review Star Trek TNG episodes (and other Star Trek things, I just started with TNG, so it become my user)

Intro post:

My main blog is @nonbinaryloser, this is purely dedicated to reviewing TNG episodes.

Premise: I’m just watching TNG for the first time and I thought that it would be fun to write a little thing about each episode after I watch it. Just kind of my thoughts and stuff like that. Yeah, that’s it. I’ll probably move on to other Star Trek shows after I watch TNG, so my name won’t be accurate forever lol.

I’ve already seen the entirety of TOS + the movies and I’ve also seen AOS, the first three seasons of Disco, and SNW. My favorite character is Spock, so, I’ll probably mention him any chance I get. Be warned. I might also slip in some references to other TV shows and some music, hopefully they won’t be too excessive and I’ll make sure that they won’t be necessary to understand.

Movie: Nemesis

I’ve been putting this one off for so long because I knew how it ends. And then I finally decided to watch it today and I completely forgot why I was putting it off until halfway through. It hit me like a train and I spent the rest of the movie in a constant state of anxious anticipation.

Commentary:

- Riker and Troi got married!!! Good for them. I wonder if the Betazoid wedding still happened on schedule after… everything.

- I now want to start addressing people as “ladies, gentleman, and invited transgender species”

- The Remans look like those super vampires in BtVS season 7 mixed with Clem (also from BtVS).

- Why wasn’t Spock there to help with the diplomatic stuff. He knows so much about Romulan politics and he’s already there. I guess he’s kinda rogue now, but he would probably have been very useful.

- AUGHHHH, Data was gonna be the new first officer :(

- I like B-4. That last scene with him was nice. And Data’s moment where he turned him off was very sad and touching.

- At the wedding, Data and Geordi were sitting a bit closer than necessary lol.

- Shinzon looked nothing like Picard lol. He was a good villain though, even if his reasoning didn’t make much sense. He was very menacing.

- When Geordi was like “do you think it’s a long lost relative” about the positronic signal I’ll bet Data was internally like “please God no. We all know how well that went last time”.

- I hope that Picard and that Romulan commander managed to get that drink.

- When Worf said “Romulan ale should be illegal”, I responded with “it is” at the exact same time as Guinan and Geordi.

- I loved that little scene at the end where they were celebrating Data’s life. It was really sweet. Also, I was crying and then I stared crying even harder when Troi stated crying. Geordi also looked close to tears :(

- Why replicate Picard? There are higher up people that could get you more power if you impersonated them. Was it just that they happened to get some of his DNA or was there a purpose?

- Janeway cameo!!!

8/10, I’m sad now :((((

Movie: Insurrection

I got home from a long day at school and decided to relax and watch this. Bad idea, this was not very relaxing lol.

Commentary:

- I liked that little creature thing even though it had no plot relevance.

- Riker with no beard is so cursed. I don’t like it.

- Picard’s little dance was fun

- What was the whole Gilbert and Sullivan thing? lol. Is that why Una likes them in SNW? Like, is it a reference?

- I need Worf to keep his hair down more. It’s so pretty!!!

- I love that they keep making excuses as to why Worf is on the ship instead of the DS9. Like, every time it’s something new lol.

- I liked the thing with Data learning to play. That was cute.

- I can’t believe Data went on a killing rampage just because he got shot.

- The message was nice I guess.

4/10. I literally don’t have anything else to say. This movie sucked and I can’t even articulate why.

Movie: First Contact

I’ve been zooming through the movies. I’m already halfway done :(

Commentary:

- I love that they just happened to pick Worf up. It wouldn’t be the same without him.

- Fact that both Star Trek shows that have movies have a time travel one is amazing. Time travel is my favorite sci-fi troupe.

- I love Doctor Chrusher’s hair!!!

- Is it just me or did Data’s eyes look a little red in certain lighting? I think he go darker yellow eyes than before.

- Sooo… Data can just get shot by 20 bullets and be fine??!! Seems a bit unlikely.

- Lmao, Troi asking if they needed a moment alone with the Phoenix took me out.

- Zephram Cochrane’s outfit was kinda iconic tbh.

- Lily was great. No time travel movie is complete without someone to freak out about the time travel and all the weird bullshit happening. Also, if I were her, I would have also passed out after seeing someone jump about 40ft and land perfectly fine and then be shot a dozen times and also be fine. I’m surprised she didn’t freak out more.

- Look, I love Data, but they should not have brought him down to Earth with them. There was a big chance that he would be seen by a humans and how would they explain that? It’s not like they NEEDED him down there.

- Poor Zephram Cochrane, everyone was fangirling (gn) over him. I would be pretty freaked out too. Especially about the whole statue thing.

- Geordi, you’re putting too much pressure on him. Chill out a bit.

- Troi getting drunk was absolutely one of the highlights of the movie. She was so funny and I faceplamed at the same time as Riker lol.

- They don’t have tequila in the 24th century? Weird

- Geordi’s eyes look really cool and pretty. I love how he was wearing sunglasses the whole time to hide them. He looked very cool 😎

- Lily had Picard pinned almost immediately. She was so right, he was doing it for revenge.

- That hull scene made me really nervous. I’m glad they get training for that despite basically never having to do it.

- Why did Riker and Geordi come with Cochrane on the launch? I feel like that would change the past a bit. Also, he was so iconic for playing that music during launch.

- Data can turn off his emotion chip now. That’s cool, I’m glad they fixed it so that it wasn’t fused to his brain anymore.

- I love how the ground crew doesn’t seem too concerned about losing contact with the Enterprise. They’re just like “we can’t contact them? That’s weird. Anyway…”. Meanwhile, absolute chaos is happening aboard the ship.

- Worf deserved more of an apology from Picard.

- Data with human skin was honestly a little horrifying. Also, I love that he had a bit of hair that was out of the style that lined up with his human skin. What was that about?

- I can’t beloved they forcibly turned on his emotion chip. He must have been so scared :(

- Is no one going to fix Data’s face?

- There was a Nurse Ogawa cameo!!! I love her!!!!

- I love that first contact involved old rock music apparently. Also, isn’t finger touching kissing in Vulcan culture? Freaks (affectionate).

- Lol, I can’t imagine explaining everything that happen on the ship to the ground crew. They’re must have been flabbergasted.

10/10, I really loved it!!! I don’t wanna go through these too fast, so I’m gonna take a few day long break. Maybe I’ll finally finish Twin Peaks.

Movie: Generations

I have finally found the time to sit down and watch Generations (and if it is nearly 1:00 am as I am writing this, no it isn’t). I knew a couple things going in. Like that Data gets his emotion chip and Kirk appears. That’s about it. I had not clue what to expect. It was a pretty wild ride.

Commentary:

- The fact that Kirk dies in the first ten minutes is fucking bonkers. Also, where was the rest of the crew? Why was it only Kirk, Checkov, and McCoy

- I like that Sulu’s daughter was there

- Was the captain that guy from Ferris Bueller’s day off? I swear he was

- Lmao, why would they leave space dock without anything on the ship??!! That’s stupid

- I like that there were reporters. Feels very realistic

- Noooo, Data, you don’t have to change yourself to fit in. You’re amazing the way you are :(

- RIP Rene, I liked him in that one episode he was in

- Poor Data, I knew the emotion chip wasn’t a good idea. He was so scared :(

- Geordi might have been better to be nicer to Data. I think it was pretty obvious that he wasn’t himself. Like, obviously experiencing emotions on that level for the first time ever is going fuck you up for a bit and also there was the potential that it could scramble his brains.

- Bro, poor Geordi. Being kidnapped and used like that.

- I can’t believe Guinan just happened to be there in the Nexus. Very lucky.

- So, the emotions are permanent, harmful, and basically made him suicidal in the first few hours? Great/s

- I feel like me and Doctor Crusher have very different definitions of “fit for duty”. I would not wanting to basically go into a coma/die until you stop feeling emotions that are so overwhelming that you can’t think straight is not “fit for duty”, but what do I know?

- I loved Data’s life forms song. It’s so fun!!!

- I loved the bit with everyone evacuating. Geordi saving the kids. All of the panic and disorder. It was just a good sequence.

- I just realized that we have never seen Data swear before. I feel like hurtling towards a planet definitely warranted a few strong words though.

- Holy shit, they crashed the Enterprise

- Data and Troi clinging on to each other as the crashed was really sweet

- lol, who the fuck is Antonia??!!

- I wish Kirk could have found out what Spock’s been doing since he died. It’s pretty insane and Picard knows all about it. Alas, there was no time :(

- Kirk and Picard actually had really good chemistry

- RIP again Kirk, I guess. What an anticlimactic way to go after all that’s happened in his life. A bridge falling on him lol.

- His tears are orange??!!

- Awwwww, Data’s reunion with Spot was really sweet.

7/10, it was pretty good. I did get a little bit of secondhand embarrassment from a couple of the Data scenes, but it was enjoyable to watch otherwise.

Season 7, episode 25: All Good Things

I’m done. This is so bittersweet to me. I’m gonna miss this show so much. I had AP bio today, so I decided to watch this as a little treat after feverishly studying for the past 3 weeks. It was so worth the wait.

Commentary:

- I love how they all drifted away from each and everyone is in conflict with someone besides Data and Geordi. They are truly unproblematic kings. And I love how they just went straight back into bestie mode too.

- WHAT DO YOU MEAN TROI DIED??!! Noooooo!!!

- Ok, is it weird to say that old Worf was really hot? Like, his hair was absolutely gorgeous.

- I loved that scene with early Data and O’Brien. It really shows how far he’s come. And how far everyone else has come in accepting him.

- I’m a little confused about future Data though. He kept smiling and using contractions. Does he have the emotion chip now? Or did he figure out that he really had emotions the whole time (like they should have done)?

- I feel like it was kinda skipped over how Geordi becomes seeing and Nurse Ogawa looses her baby. Like, that was kinda a big thing for both of them.

- Old Riker’s hair was really funny for some reason.

- Old Doctor Crusher on the other hand, was absolutely gorgeous.

- Picard calling Data a genius in all time periods made me really happy.

- I actually liked Data’s hair. Also, he teaches at Cambridge now??!!

- DOCTOR CRUSHER AND PICARD KISSED!!! This is not a drill!!! I was actually screaming when it happened. And right before, I was just chanting “please please pleaseeeeee!!”. Like, fucking finally.

- I found it so funny when the cloak broke and Riker was like “ok, let’s do it the old fashioned way, warp 13”. Ah, yes, warp 13. So old fashioned Like, hello?? I’m pretty sure cloaks were invented before warp 13. I’ve seen Threshold, I know that they have a long way to go before they get to warp 13 lol.

- This really made me realize how much older everyone looked in the pilot. Like, they didn’t quite look right in the past time period and I realized that was because they had aged. And then they just used a clip of Riker from the pilot for the past time period and it was so obvious. Made me laugh a bit.

- Ok, imagine getting to be John De Lancie and getting to make that absolutely banger speech at the end of a seven season show that you were only in about 10 episodes of. Like, I love how important Q is as a character and that speech was actually incredible. I was a little scared that they were going to end on it though. Like, that would work really well, but I wanted them to end on all the characters together to really highlight that found family vibe of the whole show. And they did!!!!

- Speaking of the ending, I loved it so much. I loved the domesticity of it, it that makes sense. Like, Picard came in and they’re just all together playing poker and being happy. Nothing big, but it tied up the characters really well. Data found his place among humans. So did Worf. Picard managed to be close to people. And everyone else found a place where they could be accepted and loved. And I loved seeing that happen with Picard being added as the final piece to complete that picture of everyone finding their people on the Enterprise. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

- I loved the way that they wrapped up the trial thing. Like, that whole seven years was a trial for humanity and they actually passed. That makes me so happy. The whole time, they were showing how humanity can grow and change and Q eventually saw that. Sure, he said they had a long way to go, but there’s hope. It’s sort of a way for them to send that message to the viewers: “we have a long way to go, but we can do it. There is hope”. That’s a beautiful way to end it all.

10/10!!!! I believe that was the best episode of TNG there is. And it’s the last one :(. I could probably talk about this episode for hours, but that’s all I can think of for now. I’m really gonna miss this show. At least I still have the movies. And then DS9. It’s summer soon, so I will definitely be watching more episodes more quickly. I just have to get through the rest of AP testing first.

I have further reflected on the episode and I have a few things to add:

- I didn’t notice while I was watching, but someone pointed out that Data has 14 cats in the future time period and I love that so much. I went back to rewatch that bit and it’s so funny to me. Very Data.

- When Q leaned in to whisper in Picard’s ear, I thought he was going to kiss him for a second. I wish that had happened :(

- When Q said that he would visit “if Picard was lucky” I was like “he’ll be back, he can’t stand to be away from his boyfriend for very long”.

- Data comparing Q and Picard to a pet and its master is crazy.

Season 7, episode 24: Preemptive strike

There’s only one more after this :(

Commentary:

- I really get where Ro was coming from with this. It makes so much sense, but I don’t agree with her completely.

- I’m glad that Riker let her go. And he seemed genuinely sad about it too. And so did she.

- Her goodbye was slightly ruined by the fact that when Riker said “So long, Ro” I heard it as “So long, bro”. I spent a good minute laughing at that. It ruined the sadness of the moment a bit.

- I can’t believe that they sent Riker with Ro. They shouldn’t have sent their first officer, imo.

- I love how they sent Data and Worf to do the setup part of the mission. They are so non-emotive, it’s perfect.

- I wonder if she ever told them that she was a Starfleet spy in the beginning. And I wonder what they would say to that.

- I wish that they had shown the buildup of Ro slowly beginning to agree with the Maquis more. It felt a little sudden.

- Picard called her “Laren”. Are they really that close?

- I liked that old guy that died. He was cool :(

- The fact that they made Ro sympathetic and also Starfleet was really well done. I love it when they really show how neither side is all bad all the time.

Season 7, episode 23: Emergence

I’m sick, so I actually had time to watch an episode!!! I’ve been basically constantly studying for APs for the past couple weeks :(

Commentary:

- It’s cool that the ship took inspiration from Data’s positronic brain, that really goes to show that the it did take inspiration from its logs to create the life form.

- The new life form literally just looked like a bunch of twisty straws.

- I love it when the holodeck just gets all random and weird. Or really when any weird imagery comes in, like the Data dream episode.

8/10, good. I can’t think of anything else to say, my brain is fried due to a combination of too much studying and illness.

Season 7, episode 22: Bloodlines

I’m gonna make this SUPER quick, I’m in the middle of cleaning my room lol. Idk why, but I got the random urge. I’m def not gonna finish tonight though, I’ve just started on my desk drawers and it’s 9:30.

Commentary:

- I’m glad that that wasn’t his son, that would have been weird. Like, I can’t really imagine Picard having a son (besides Wes lol).

- Was Bok in an episode from before or is this one of the ones where they reference a past event that they never showed?

- Miranda seems like she was wonderful.

7/10, nothing special, but good.

Season 7, episode 21: Firstborn

Ok, it has actually been forever since I posted on this account. I’ve been trying to savor the last few episodes of TNG by spacing them out, but then I got sidetracked with other shows and forgot lol. I’m back now though. And I’ll probably finish pretty soon. I want to get to First Contact by First Contact day, so I’ll speed things up a bit. That was a lot. And now for the actual review!!!

Commentary:

- Ok, I actually don’t have that much to say about this one.

- This is an interesting look into cultural heritage and multicultural families. Defiantly a lot of commentary. I sort of relate to it, I had a b’nai mitzvah, but mostly because I felt like I needed to in order to make my family happy. I understand Alexander here, although my situation was not quite as intense.

- It was cool to see Klingon ceremonies. I love seeing different cultures in Star Trek, it’s always super cool and fun. I love learning about cultures in general, so them developing their invented cultures in the Star Trek universe is always fascinating.

- I’m glad that Worf ultimately let Alexander have the choice. It’s a pretty big commitment and I understand why Worf wants Alexander to do it, but Alexander should be able to make his own decisions.

- I can’t believe that those Klingon sisters came back.

- Alexander time traveling with basically no explanation is kinda insane.

- I feel like there’s a lot to unpack with the fact that Alexander was willing to kill his child self in order to change the future.

- I love it when kids get to be kids on tv. It’s really nice to see. So, I loved the “water balloon” - I forgot what it was actually called - scene in the beginning.

8/10, a nice episode to come back to. And it turns out, I did have a lot to say lol.

Season 2, episode 15: Threshold (Voyager)

I watched this for Threshold day. I haven’t seen any Voyager before.

… I understand now.

Commentary:

- First, my general impressions of the characters since this is my first time seeing them:

- The Doctor’s voice is gay

- I think I hate Tom

- Neelix seems cool

- B’elenna is super pretty and super cool and I like her a lot.

- And now for everything else:

- THAT WAS SO STUPID!!! It was so similar to Genesis, but I think I actually liked Genesis more. Probably just because I know the characters.

- “Pepperoni!!!”

- Lizard babies were kinda cute actually.

- I love how awkward they were at the end. I would actually die of embarrassment. And it seems like they actually kinda remember 😭

5/10, so fucking terrible, but so wonderfully meme worthy. I wanna know how they came up with this. Actually, I NEED to know.

Season 7, episode 20: Journey’s End

It’s been a minute. I’ve been watching a lot of Discovery (I’m halfway through season 4) and also Twin Peaks (which I’m almost done with). And I’ve also been busy with school and life and stuff. But, I will always return to my beloved TNG ❤️

Commentary:

-That being said, idk about this episode. I am not the right person to talk about it and it’s portrayal of Native American people, but I will try to give some wider story commentary and after I write this, I will go read some people’s reviews of this that are better equipped to handle the topic and edit this post to link some of them.

- I will say that this episode was def a bit white saviory.

- Ok, we need to talk about Wes in this episode. Wtf was that??!! Why is he superhuman now??!! And he never gave any indication that he didn’t like Starfleet before. However, he was correct in telling the people about Starfleet’s plans for them. Forcibly removing people from their land has always been and always will be wrong, so good on Wes for warning them.

- I can’t believe that Picard obeyed clearly immoral orders AND was prepared to help the members of a genocidal government to forcibly remove people from their land. Fuck you Picard. I did not like his characterization in this.

- Ok, I really liked the scene when Wes first arrives. Data and Geordi came to greet him!!! They truly are his gay uncles lol.

3/10, this was just kinda racist and the Wes thing made no sense.

Season 1, episode 1: Kids These Days (Starfleet Academy)

I’m a few days late, but I started it :)

Commentary:

- I haven’t seen Voyager yet and I already love The Doctor.

- Sam is so cute, I love her!!! Also, I totally ship her and Genesis, they have potential.

- The music during the fight scene and when they arrived in San Francisco seemed a bit out of place.

- I saw a lot of people that I love on the wall of iconic officers. I was freaking out at every one. Like “Spock!!! Troi!!! Data!!! Uhura!!! Scotty!!! Chekov!!!”. I didn’t see Geordi though, where is he :(

- OMG, there was one of those half black half white aliens!!!!

- It’s interesting that they have both Klingon designs in here.

- I wish Caleb had gotten to keep his long hair :(. The Klingon guy (I forgot his name, I’m so sorry) got to have a red streak in his hair.

- I wish they would stop with the modern slang. It takes me out of it a bit.

7/10, not bad, but it needs time to cook.

Also, I never finished Discovery, so I think I’m gonna try to do that before the next episode comes out so that I have all of the context. I won’t review it though, I don’t really want to. And no, I will not be watching Section 31. I refuse to subject myself to that.

Season 7, episode 19: Genesis

WTF WAS THAT??!! My uncle warned me about this episode. He was right 😭

Commentary:

- Ok, Barclay checking the medical database and diagnosing himself with a deadly disease is so real. I do the same thing all the time. He probably has OCD (so do I).

- So, are Worf and Troi dating now?

- Watching this episode while taking AP bio was definitely an experience. Like, I now know what all of that is wrong, not just that it is, so it pisses me off more. And my dad was pissed too, he teaches human evolution lol.

- How was Barclay spinning webs??? Actually, on second thought, I don’t wanna know.

- Why didn’t Data feed the kitten before he left? I feel like he would. Also, why was Spot a fucking lizard 😭😭😭?

- Barclay the human sized spider is something I never want to see again.

- Thank god for Data

- Barclay being a cat person and Spot liking him makes me happy.

- Barclay has a disease named after him. That’s cool.

- I actually swear Spot was a male like five episodes ago. Am I going crazy?

Season 7, episode 18: Eye of the Beholder

I’m getting so close to the end. I’m actually starting to feel sad about it.

TW: DISCUSSIONS OF SUICIDE. THAT WILL BE QUITE A BIT OF THE CONTENTS OF THIS POST.

Commentary:

- Data’s thing about almost committing suicide was incredibly concerning. Yes, he doesn’t feel like that anymore, but maybe someone should have a chat with him nonetheless? Geordi seemed pretty concerned at least.

- I find it hard to believe that this is Picard’s first suicide under his command. A lot of people in Starfleet are chronically stressed from their job and probably prone to mental health issues to due isolation and/or being part of minority groups. Idk, I feel like the suicide rate couldn’t be zero in all of the years that Picard has been a captain.

- Ok, I know that Troi and Worf have only been together in dreams/ other realities so far, but they make a really cute couple. I lowkey ship it. I think I’ve said this before, but I’m saying it now because it’s relevant. Also, Troi/Riker/Worf polycule plz!!!

- I totally called that they weren’t gonna find an entire human body right before they found it!!!

- Sooo… were all three of those people just reported missing on the same day, under the same circumstances, in the same location and no one thought to investigate more?

- I love it when Star Trek tries to find vaguely scientific ways to have ghosts. It’s always entertaining.

7/10, I’m not entirely sure how I felt about their depiction of suicide, but I liked the rest.
