Familiar Loss
“Someone has to.” He replied, his voice a bit more dismal than he’d realized.
If he was being honest, he still wasn’t sure about being Firelord. He tried to be, told himself that destiny had carved a new path—a brighter one—for him in which he brought his nation out of the hateful fearing place it had shaped itself into.
But he’d always been a contradictory man, both proud in his abilities and doubtful that he was worth much. As he’d gotten older, humbled himself some, and left those overly arrogant ways behind his doubt seemed to grow, not ease. It certainly didn’t help that people were rooting for him to fail, and that his only friends were Agni knows where, leaving him to rule the country by himself without a friendly face to turn to.
Not that he needed help of course, he could handle his own.
But…it didn’t make the task any easier.
He gave a soft chuckle at the mans statement, lowering his eyes to his plate before him. “I think…I think I’ve had enough honor for one lifetime.” At least he’d had enough griping about needing to restore it. His duty was to restore his countries honor now, he’d claimed his own.
Too bad he didn’t feel honorable to begin with.
He bit back a sigh and shook off the thought, it wasn’t like him doubting himself was going to change things. Uncle had told him that only he could change the country for a better and he would. It was his duty, his rightful place, his destiny. Funny how Uncle had said so long ago that he could curve his own destiny and yet here he was unable to escape it even if he wanted to live a new life away from his homeland.
“Different? Think so huh?” He looked to the side. “Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.” He struggled so much, was constantly at war with himself when trying to figure out what was the right thing to do. It had been a problem ever since he was a child. Do as his mother wanted or his father demanded. What his sister suggested or his uncle advised. In the end he still struggled to do what was right; to differentiate between the good and the bad.
His uncle called it his legacy. He called it a curse.
“But I will admit if anyone can run the country, it’d probably be me. It might take a while, and it wont be—it’s not easy. But I never give up without a fight, not going to start now.”
There was no awkward silence that followed thankfully when a young woman walked over with their meals.
"I guess so. It just doesn't seem fair this way. Though trusting it to the people who made the mess wouldn't make much sense either..." he trailed off. He wasn't sure why the sudden investment in this issue, but perhaps it wasn't the entire issue so much as this person.
Their situations weren't the same, of course. Kiba had no idea what it was like to try to run a nation, to deal with such warfare; and Zuko didn't know what it was like to thought extinct, hunted, continually searching for a place that he was told did not exist time and again. But even so, the feelings involved in each of their situations could be likened.
One thing they did seem to have entirely in common, though, was dealing with things alone. Whether or not it was what they preferred, both had learned to operate that way.
As kept occurring to him, the two just seemed to have a sense of understanding for one another. It was not precise since they hadn't gone into all the details - and Kiba didn't plan to, on principal - but even still. He was sure Zuko could feel it on some level as well.
"From what I can tell," Kiba stated matter-of-factly. The gist he was getting from what Zuko told him was that the people before him had been the sort who wouldn't spare this kind of time with someone like him. That made Zuko entirely different. What could make it seem like that wasn't true?
At any rate, Kiba believe in his sense of intuition; he let it lead him plenty. And it was telling him that, if nothing else, this man would do his best; he was earnest in what he was trying to do. So with conviction, Kiba was able to say, "However things go, I'm sure you'll do your best. You're trying already, and having that kind of purpose is what gives someone a reason to live - something to do with their life."
No sooner had this been said than the food arrived. Kiba sniffed at it curiously - in as human a way as possible. It smelled good - much better than things he had scrounged up before.
"I think I owe you a thanks for this," Kiba said, not entirely sure if he'd been courteous enough to do so yet. And really, for once, he was allowing someone to help him this little bit with something - even just food. He let his expression soften some, into a bit of a smile.
Despite his pride, he thought he owed those few words to this man. Mankind might still not be in his favor, but he had learned that there were those exceptions who proved themselves different. This seemed to be one of them.

[Mass Greeter!]
Kiba was standing, surveying the latest place he'd stumbled upon -- taking a breather so to speak, or as much of one as he would allow himself. Caught up in the scents of the place, trying to pick apart ones that would be useful, he was playing little attention to anything else. Suddenly, however, he was knocked into from behind. He turned to see who the culprit had been.

Resigning himself to the fact that passing through any populated area would require interaction, Kiba greeted the stranger before him with just a touch more common courtesy than usual. “Hello. Who are you?”
“Hey,” He smiled, “The name’s Dax. What about you?”
He nodded in acknowledgement. "Name's Kiba," he replied. His eyes were darting about, not fast enough for him to be nervous, but noticeably so. He was scoping out his surrounding, unfamiliar with the place.

Sonic rolled his eyes, spreading his hands to his side. “Uh, hello? In case you haven’t noticed I’m not exactly human myself.”
“And it takes a lot to fool these eyes.”
"Fair enough, I guess," he conceded. Even still, when other wolves told him apart, it was usually be scent. Though, he supposed, talking to a non-human was probably something of a tip-off.

“Kiba!! You’re okay!” Quick strides brought Toboe to stand before the ivory-pelted wolf, a half-circle drawn by his footprints. A hesitant hand came up to grip the bunched fabric of one sleeve - a quick assurance in Kiba’s physical presence. They’d all died Tsume had said, but Kiba didn’t feel like a ghost. Or perhaps they were both ghosts?
“I’m okay - I’m really glad you’re alright! I’ve been looking for you guys everywhere!”
Kiba's expression relaxed some, hearing that the younger wolf was okay. At this point, calling any one of his former companions a member of the pack would be a stretch; the pack was haphazard at best by now. But they were the closest he had, and the issue of their welfare sat in the back of his mind.
"Likewise. It's been hard to pick up a trail on anyone. But I guess there's still a chance of running into the others."

“Tch—still so cocky about that bullshit.” Tsume was finished with paradise; with the idea, the journey—even the damn word grated every nerve of irritation in his body. He’d had his doubts from the beginning, and although it seemed real as he moved on, the resolution of everything—the suffering they all endured in the end… He was finished. No more hopes for a fictional heaven. “Take a word of advice, punk: forget about it. It’s done. You’re chasing nothing but an idea.”
"Tch." Kiba bristled a bit. Paradise was a touchy subject with him, and the way Tsume spoke of it only served to irritate him. It wouldn't change his mind, what with it being so one-track toward that goal. No, to him, it was just disrespectful talk. "At least I'm chasing something. What are you doing?"
ooc; I have appeared to try to work on my, like, 16 drafts...at 4 a.m. OTL
ooc; ugh, I've been gone for so long at this point I think you should just let me know if you want to continue or start something OTL I still have four weeks of school until summer break, so no promises on how often I'll be here but...yeah
ooc; ...Okay, so like all the replies I owe range from long to really long and it's 3 a.m. already. I'll have to try and work on those tomorrow. Goodnight!
Hi Kiba i'm Meazuki Chan nice to meet you
"How do you know me?" He hadn't introduced himself, so it was curious to him. Perhaps it was less than polite of him to respond as such, but pleasantries such as 'nice to meet you' were things he rarely engaged in.
KIBA I LOVE YOU YOUR SO AMAZING!!! One day, you'll find Paradise ^u^
It was odd to him that someone he had no memory of speaking with would know his name and what he was trying to accomplish. All that left his bewildered mouth was "Thanks..."
