âI ainât never been shit, thatâs what my mommy said Now they callinâ to check to see if I took the gun from under my bedâ
Secretly the realest Quik song of all. Dudeâs mentally unraveling while cracking jokes about it, like Slim Shady LP-era Eminem with even less of a filter. A jokey line about watching a âpurple videotapeâ only a verse away from jamming his .38 into his mouth. Right after the quoted lines, noting with a slight lyrical grin that nobody trusts himâhis mother, his shrink, himself. Then, a rambling digression about âFreewayâ Ricky Ross, the CIA, and gangs killing children thatâs like tangentially connected (at best!) to dudeâs clear mental illness. And then, of course, the key line with Quik in particularââmy enemies are my used-to-be friends,â an already pretty damn resonant line that becomes hilarious when applied to Quik, whose entire career has been burning and rebuilding and reburning bridges with AMG, Suga Free, and pretty much every single other rapper whoâs ever been part of his scene. His whole run-on-sentence style is even pertinent here, like it sounds like a guy rushing to get everything heâs gotta say out because this is his only chance at a confession on wax. Just a great fucking song. Quikâs sort of staked his claim on being a production auteur and the kinda West Coast gangsta âsmartest guy in the room,â but getting nakedly personal on this song works wonders for him. (I wonât lie to you here. Thereâs probably a whole post I could write on why Trauma, while being a huge mess in a lot of ways, is a contender for my favorite rap album of at least the past decade. But Iâll spare you, itâs 1:30 in the morning and you donât need to hear it. But really, listen to it if you havenât, or give it another shot if you have. Itâs an underrated record.)
