Read Response 4 (pt. 2, The Other History of Intercultural Performance)

This was very eye opening. I thought the concept of their performance was very well done, the intention clear (though when reading the exact intention from one of the performers it may be a bit of a cheat), and it reminded me of the article “Body Rituals of the Nacirema”. I am not surprised by the behaviors of the audience, not that I like them at all, but the reactions of people in the way they criticize it did surprise me, as this seems exactly the kind of critique that is both important and successful. I also thought the take that performance art in America started with the showcasing of captured individuals and putting them on display rang true, and it makes me look at the history of performance art as we know it described in the other reading with a new lens.

Reading Response 4 (pt. 1, Performance: A Hidden History)

I actually have some questions regarding this reading’s points. I do believe that what is considered “performance art” in modern day is a relatively recent development, that agrees with the timeline given in the article, though I have to wonder why theatre, comedy, and dance are not included in this genre. They have around for centuries in countless cultures and still reign to this day. I definitely understand the differences between these things and what we call  “performance art” but at the same time, they’re built off of the same core, the want to communicate ideas, morals, political stances, belief systems, or to connect personally with an audience. While I understand the intention of describing the difficulty in categorizing it, I also disagree. It is art, and not all art looks like a classic renaissance painting. Performance art has been around for centuries, we’re simply experiencing another branch, and it is not as difficult and nuanced as people can sometimes make it seem.

Reading Response 3 (pt. 2, Ch. 6)

This made me think about all the ways time is digested in media and by audience. I have often thought about how photographs are slices of captured time, and how it makes a moment permanent. I also frequently think about time when watching TV, and how a show may be over or was filmed years ago, but every time I watch it it feels as though it’s happening right in that moment. I liked how they talked a lot about how artists working with time, especially in film, alter it to make it seem longer or shorter. The way that a video may be only a few minutes long but it took years to put it together, or that a story may only play on film for around 30 minutes but be set over the course of multiple days. Time has always been at least a little bit confusing, making it all the easier to manipulate.

Reading Response 3 (pt. 1, Vanishing and Becoming)

I thought this readings take on projections was very interesting. It was less the idea of it being the very first art medium, though I thought that that was interesting and agreeable, but the way they examined projection throughout time. I do have to say I thought it was more wordy than it needed to be, but the content was thought provoking. It made me think about how you learn to do shadow puppets as a kid, and how when one of the first film of sorts came out, the train coming toward the screen, the audience were terrified thinking the train was going to hit them, and how thats changed drastically to our interaction with film now. We do have similar reactions to holograms and 3D projections, as thats the next level in this long development journey.

Dress Up, a performance

I was kind of lost as to where to go for this project, but I wanted to something about gender performance. I realized a really fun and simple way to talk about that was makeup. I am non-binary and I find a lot of joy in picking out where on the spectrum of gender I fit for the day, and really expressing that. I love putting on makeup when I’m feeling extra feminine and its a super fun practice for me. Makeup has turned into a lot of different things for a lot of different people, but to me it’s an incredibly useful tool to help me feel like myself sometimes. This is just me having fun with it!

Technical Exercise #3: Queen of Disaster Music Video

For this technical exercise I used an unreleased Lana Del Rey song, my favorite is “Queen of Disaster”. Many people remake Lana Del Rey music videos for unreleased songs and ones that don't have music videos. I thought it would be intriguing to do that with kind of my own content collection from my “red archive”. I used my own ballerina jewelry box and old video diaries from a heartbreaking time, to contribute to a collisionary tale of, heartbreak, nostalgia, going mad and becoming a witch. I intended to emulate like a uncomfortably saccharine feeling for viewers, almost too sweet and scary.

Project 3: We are the Doctor

Doctor who is a show that has been running since 1963 (with a short intermission). It has touched many peoples lives over that long time period, and continues to do so. It was an integral part of my childhood and many others. It teaches lesson, morality, emotional maturity and development, how to be silly, how to be serious, and how to be brave. This all sounds a little dramatic but there are many parts of who I am today and my worldview that I can attribute to this show and its presence during my formative years. Not only is this show a great love of mine, but media itself is so important and plays a big role in children’s development, and the subject matter and lessons continue to be revered by people well into their adult hood.

Technical exercise 3: 傘がない (kasaga nai) trials of love music video

This song is a famous Japanese song (傘がない) about how strong a mans love is for his partner, and so by combining clips from movies and shows about the good and the bad of love, I aim to portray his devotion and passion through well known media. The lyrics are about how there are many problems in the world, but none of them matter because it's raining outside, he doesn't have an umbrella, and he needs to get to his partner. There have been many remasterings of this song, and covers by many artists, and it remains a song that is close to my heart.

Art Project 2: The Loop The Rocky Horror Picture Show “Sweet Transvestite”

Growing up, I was always fascinated by The Rocky Horror Picture show. I would catch glimpses of the movie when it played on the TV, hoping that I could watch more of it before my parents found out. The music, dancing, and costumes made me feel like I was watching something that was taboo. I have one memory of finding my dad watching it on our family TV and being really surprised that such a strait-laced man such as my father would watch this movie. He probably felt the same taboo I felt at the time. Watching the movie again as an adult I understand why it is so popular. The characters are so hilariously portrayed, and the story is ridiculously fun. I selected clips from the song “Sweet Transvestite” from The Rocky Horror Picture show because of the confidence Dr. Frank-N-Furter exulted during his introduction. This movie still feels a little taboo but in a good way.

This is such a wonderful choice of content. I also love how you didn’t focus on the entire movie, but one specific song. I also remember the first time seeing this movie and a show and being just baffled by it as a kid, and then watching it more and more as I got older and the meaning and the experience changing for me overtime. I feel like this song is one of the most energetic of the movie and I feel that your gifs portray the flamboyance of the whole experience of this song. Very nice!

The Loop.

My work is focused on modern exploration, following Shiey through different landscapes throughout Europe, Russia, and Ethiopia. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be an explorer. I’ve always been fascinated by different landscapes and modern adventures. Being modernized as humans can sometimes make us feel oppressed and locked down. What starts out as an urge of freedom, there is something inside our primitive brains that draws us towards adventure. A feeling of discovery, a rush of excitement, a feeling of truly being alive. This is the way humans should live their lives, through the exploration of landscapes that surround us.

I think your topic and choice of footage is very potent. I feel like these moments are the raw aspects of travel and exploration and really expose the grandeur of even the smallest parts of adventure. I love how you are a subject in each of these gifs and the landscape is always so fast around you.
