The heart in Viktor’s hands was deceptively light, he thought, for something that carried so much weight.

Viktor sat on his bed with Makkachin supporting his back, only moonlight illuminating the living treasure in his palms. The only sounds came from his and Makkachin’s breathing and the steady movement of the organ he cradled.

The heartbeat was a slow one, slow enough that Viktor knew his soulmate was probably an athlete as well. For many years that was all he knew, but he’s found himself taking the heart out of the lockbox more and more often lately, so now also knows that sometimes the heartbeat takes off, flutters to the point that Viktor is terrified for its owner, before slowing down again.
