Brooke grinned when she heard that the guy behind her was actually going to order her recommendation. “You’ll love it.” She insisted as she moved toward the counter to wait for her drink. She hummed as she ran a hand through her hair when she contemplated his question. “I come here every now and again. What about you?” 

Toby just hummed when the girl told him he’d love her particular choice. “I come here from time to time. I came more when I was in high school, but you know.” He shrugged. “I know Andromeda isn’t that small of a city, but you don’t look familiar. I’m sorry, do I know you?”

Emily was on one of her nightly strolls, just enjoying the ocean air. However, Toby Cavanaugh caught her eye in the distance, he was snapping pictures, something he’d always done. She hadn’t seen him since her last holiday break, and it was nice returning to Andromeda seeing familiar faces. Emily immediately approached him, she was about to say something, but he jumped in mid-air, and Emily couldn’t contain the laugh that erupted. 

“Toby, hi! I’m so sorry I jumped you.” She chuckled as she moved close to him and gave him a hug. “So sorry, oh my gosh…” Emily repeated. “How are you? Besides being anxious after the scare.” 

“Well now I know I’m alive if I ever questioned that.” Toby joked. He looked back at the photo he’d taken. Emily’s hair was all frizzy from her most likely coming from the ocean front and with only having the moonlight as light reference her eyes looked almost pure white and crazed. “Not your best look, Em.” Toby joined in with his own laughter as he showed her the photo he snapped. “I’ll be sure to sell this to the Inquirer and Sports Illustrated after you win gold.” He was only joking; he’d never sell any photos or information to anybody.

“What’re you doing out her all alone?” It’s not that Toby didn’t trust that Emily could take care of herself, he just worried. “Did a training session run late or just couldn’t sleep?”

Toby wasn’t one to normally take a walk late at night - he was from the Southside after all, he knew the things that could happen - yet here he was taking a walk alone. He needed to clear his mind and the best way for him to do that was to take pictures. So, here he was, walking aimlessly walking down different paths and point his camera and clicking randomly when he saw something he liked. He liked using the moonlight opposed to his camera’s flash for nature shots at night. 

He’d just finished his latest “look, point, click, look” session and when he looked at his last photo and he saw a face, he jumped a comically high amount in the air. “Jesus!” He yelled. “How long have you been following me?!”

Brooke found herself spending time at Gold Roast. It was a place to study, and most importantly, a place to get her peach tea lemonade, her go-to summer drink. Well, besides the fruity alcoholic cocktails that typically came out at that time, but this was still her favorite non-alcoholic beverage to consume. She’d opted to take a summer course, because why not? There wasn’t a whole lot to do, and besides she was in paradise, so she could always go to the beach and work on assignments if she wanted to. “Uhm duh, it’s the best thing to order on the menu.” Brooke told the individual who inquired about her drink of choice. “I highly recommend it.”

“Oh uh sure. I’ll take one small peach tea lemonade, please.” Toby told the barista. He hadn’t expected the girl to go all out feel so passionately about her choice of beverage. “Thanks.” He said with a small smile. “You come here often?” He asked as they both waited for their drinks, internally cringing at the overused line.

Her laugh echoed around them, finding Toby’s reasoning sweet if not amusing. “Butch McGee? Yeah, maybe it’s best you don’t go up to him.” she replied, sniggering. Not that she would think her patrons would intentionally start a fight, but she also didn’t want to entertain the small chance. “Fine, I’ll go get the baby from the big scary biker, you just sit there looking pretty with your drink.” she added with a playful roll of her eyes and -rather gracefully- jumped the bar, boots thudding on the floor before she marched over to the leather clad guy. 

Within seconds, she had Ember back in her arms and meandered her way back to Toby, passing her over with a grin. “Butch McGee sends his love by the way.” she teased, ruffling his hair. “If she wakes, you get bottle duty just so you know.” she added. But something told her that Toby wouldn’t mind. “So, what news from the outside world? I feel out of the loop sometimes.” 

Toby rolled his eyes at the jab, but happily accepted the sleeping baby nonetheless. Once the baby was settled, snuggled, into his left side he used his right to muse his hair back from Hanna’s messing with it. He was a guy, but he wasn’t a caveman - he did care about his looks. 

“I’m more than fine with bottle duty.” He messed with the top of the blanket, revealing the baby’s face. She may be young, but he could already see distinct features of both her mom and dad in her. A beautiful mix of the two. He didn’t know what their relationship was exactly right now; he did know they broke up after Ember was born, but they were still together all the time. The intimate details weren’t really his business, so he left it at they were both great parents and that’s all that mattered.

“I’m not much in the know-how either. I’m just living my life - my single bachelor life - and keeping to myself.” He took a sip from his beer. After which Ember started to fuss. “Well I guess it’s time for that bottle.” Toby carefully got up from his stool. “Is it still in the same place?” Not waiting for an answer he made his way behind the bar and grabbed a bottle from the mini fridge under the bar. “You mind if I go in the back?” He asked more so out of respect as he did what he asked for permission to do. He set a pot of water on the stove and left it there to boil. 

“So, now that I filled you in on my amazingly full of nothing life - I expect nothing less from you. How’s being a new mom? And Sweet Pea?” He gave her a pointed look telling there was more weight to that question than he verbalized. He situated Ember now to a more upright position on his right hip, shushing her and replacing her dummy in her mouth to sooth her. “Oh! And Emily. How’s she doing? I haven’t heard much from her. Have you?”

“- she regularly gets passed around whilst she’s napping, it’s like having a bar full of burly biker nannies. It’s almost amusing seeing them all holding her like she’s the holy grail.” she mused, sliding over the drink she’d just poured for her customer. “I trust all my regulars and it does make work easier so stop looking like that.”

Toby raised his hands in defense. “And I’m all for free labor. I just said that since I’m not here as often as your “regulars” I should get to hold her now.” Toby chuckled. He and Hanna had known each other for a while. They shared mutual friends - mainly Emily - and he loved seeing the woman she’d become even through the ultimate loss of many things in her life. 

“Will I go up to butch-mcgee over there and demand he give me Ember? No, absolutely not. He could snap me in half like a twig with one hand while keeping Ember napping with the other. And I value my life, but if her mother-” He sent her a joking pointed look. “Were to perhaps go ask for her baby back he’d give her back. Then you could give her to me.” He smirked at the blonde.

Toby grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Money has always been a struggle. He shares a one bedroom house with his mom and grandma. His mom has worked three jobs for as long as he can remember. 

Personality wise, Toby has always been quiet more observant type. He doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone; he knows who he is. For as long as he can remember he’s had a love for photography and the camera lens. He started a second job when he was in high school in order to buy his first camera from a pawn shop. 

Now, in his senior year of college, he’s just cherishing life as it comes. He plans to get out of Andromeda as soon as he graduates.
