saw @tobreakandblossom today and she made me lunch, after which she said 'and also i made you cake!' and when i asked why she explained because it's my birthday at the weekend. and i caught myself before the words 'why does it being almost my birthday mean you'd make me cake??' left my mouth. but it was a VERY close thing.

I wrote a 16k chapter in two weeks in june & in the three weeks since then I have been absolutely plagued by procrastination & avoidance. I assigned myself another article to write in order to have a buffer before working on my book (ugh) & now I am procrastinating that! but in other news I am having a good time with violin recently. locked in & sightread bach for about two hours last night; found out the other day that I still have a hindemith sonata under my fingers after some seventeen years not playing it; am meeting up with friends tonight to play through an octet. every summer I want two things: to reduce my life to a pure discipline of work–&–violin–&–singing–&–swimming, & to luxuriate & laze. both of them spoil the other. I need to commit in one direction.

octet was so good. playing for the sake of playing is my favourite thing in the whole world. I got to be fourth violin, which was fun – lots of mini-duets with first viola or third violin, some 8ve doubling of the first violin, and a few exposed corners. we're making plans to meet again for a different octet, or a string-ensemble piece. and today I have broken through those three weeks of procrastination and got 1,200 words down – not good words, and I'm realising the whole thing will need restructuring as I move from oral draft to written article, but words nonetheless. and the sun is shining, and I finally have a haircut booked tomorrow.

#I think I have lost my paper journal #which is not good #but it might simply be at the office #or somewhere in my flat.
