two days ago at angels in america someone in the front row of the upper circle, a couple of rows in front of me, spent pretty much the entire third act scrolling her phone – on minimal brightness, sure, but exactly in my eyeline, and impossible to dodge. at don giovanni yesterday, someone's alarm went off three rows behind me, and I think they didn't notice it until the second run-through of the sound. in one of my gigs earlier this month, someone directly behind the conductor as I looked at her had an illuminated smartwatch visible for the entire first half of the concert. it's been a good run of it but I'm ready for the dark ages now.
